Ah, the beginning of a fresh New Year. Don’t you just love it? Personally, I never tire of this clean slate feeling. It’s like hitting the restart button on life.

But there’s a thorny challenge to watch out for — especially if you’re a creative type who tends to dream big when setting goals. This time of year, our brains get drunk swimming in an intoxicating ocean of ‘new year, new me’ possibilities.

I mean — who can resist? So many enchanting goals, just begging to hop on our lists. After all, who doesn’t want to get in better shape, improve our health, write a book, make more money, start or grow a business, renovate our relationships, take more time off or — in some way — experience a more extraordinary life?

Here’s the problem.

Most ambitious, driven people wind up taking on way too much in terms of setting goals — especially in the new year. (Yes, I’m looking at you.) Swept up in the annual ‘new year, new me’ mania, we unwittingly set ourselves up to drown in disappointment.

Sometimes, the best way to grow is to cut back. Click To Tweet

Sound familiar? If your big ambition often turns into big overwhelm, this MarieTV is a must watch. You’ll learn a simple two-step process to help you eliminate burnout before it happens and get laser focused on what’s truly most important this year — and actually get it done.

Best of all, this episode comes with a catchy song and dance to make it easy to remember. (You’re welcome.)

If you’re up for setting smart goals and winning at the ‘new year, new me’ game without stress or overwhelm — this simple 2 step practice is for you.

Plus, grab our free downloadable calendar tool below. It’s what we use in our business to stay focused on our most important projects throughout the year. No matter what, don’t wind up a sad ‘new year new me’ statistic, overwhelmed with “to do” lists and failed New Year’s resolutions.

Watch this episode now and start your new year strong.

Now I’d love to hear from you. In the comments below, let me know:

1. What’s the number one goal or project you’re committed to bringing to life this year? Describe it in terms of the 3 filters: What’s the payoff, how will it impact others and who will you need to become in order to bring it to life?

2. What’s one project or goal that you’ve pruned as a result of this process? How does it feel to let it go?

Remember, share as much detail as possible in your reply. Thousands of incredible souls come here each week for insight and inspiration and your story may help someone else have a meaningful breakthrough.

Important: share your thoughts and ideas directly in the comments. Links to other posts, videos, etc. will be deleted as they come across as spammy.

  1. Awesome!!!

The most needed video of the time… I feel so overwhelmed by so many things I want to accomplish…. (Most of them have been in my Bucket/to do list for way too long)

    Thanks Marie!

    Janine xx

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Right on, Janine! I hope Marie’s wisdom will help you bring your big dreams to life. 🙂

    • Wow.

So I’m going through such an identity crisis. I don’t know who I am. Now that I’m out on my own it’s been like I’ve told this story of family for so long now that’s it’s no longer my condition who am I?

This year I’m figuring this out and see myself globalizing people together through the power of color. It’s so healing and supportive that I’d like to be an asset in people’s lives when the grayness strikes. I’m cutting out what doesn’t feel in alignment with how I want to show up in the world as well. More hands on learning is what the world needs so that real change can happen.

Thank you so much for helping me turn the light on a bit. Now to recreate and prune.

  4. 1. To create a healing center on the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. My intention is for this to be a gathering place for women to come together and know they are on a shared path. A center to nourish their and all of our souls : There they will learn how to awaken, trust and live their gifts through the embodied divine feminine. These women will rebalance the diminished masculine that is coming in January. The center will have a huge space for Qoya and workshops, a herbalist for an alchemical cafe, the most amazing body worker I know in the area, healers, art therapists, fire place(s), crystals, lots of light, and big big big dreaming : an equine therapist to guide people through the woods.

I will need to become more visible on social media through aligned integrity and vulnerability to ask for support to fund, build/revitalize, and market the center.

    2. Taking on new therapy clients.

    • Amy,

You’ve totally got this! I love the clarity you have for the center – amazing!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

So cool, Amy! Your healing center sounds like it’ll be a relaxing place. 🙂

    • Beautiful and so important. I support you in this goal Amy! I am local and often in Rock Creek Park. Contact me through my website at purpose blue dot com. I am a mindfulness and compassion teacher and coach.

    • Cee

Hi there! I think your idea is awesome! I too live in the Rock Creek Park area & would be very interested in connecting with you to help out !

    • Right on, Amy!!!! 😉 I love and support your idea wholeheartedly!!! Let’s connect.

    • Love this! Go for it,, it´s gonna be great

    • Daraja

Hi Amy! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I just moved back to DC and would love to learn more. I was recently introduced to Quoya over the summer so would love to join something like this in DC.

    • Candra

Amy, I will be starting a website and facebook group for The Forgotten Goddess this coming year. Would love to see what you’re doing locally.

    • Inggrid Wardani

Amazing! Love ur vision and would love to visit ur center when its done!

    • Jodie

What a gorgeous goal! Good luck *

    • Abhi Brandt

Amy, what you describe is awesome.
It seems like women all over the world start waking up to their inner power and magnifiscense and get connected through that with each other on so many and deeper levels. Love your healing center idea! Grateful – this is from a fellow traveler in Amsterdam,

    • Bobbi O.

I love your idea and can see it being an amazing success!

  5. Thank You Marie.

I really appreciate the effort you make to teach us about business and life.

    Thank You.

  6. I love the purge and prune and this year I’ve done it a bit differently – I have 2 requirements for any project and decision that I make and they are:

    1. Does it bring me joy? Meaning if I’m asked to collaborate or work on a project or be a part of a team does the thought of doing that bring me joy? And the answer has to be a RESOUNDING YAYESS for me to say I’ll do it. If I’m vascilating and thining…hmmm could be fun but I don’t know? It gets pruned – PRONTO.

The reason for the Joy is because of the other category:

    2. Does it involve writing/creativity? Everything for 2017 is writing focused. I’m working on my memoir, writing for others, and also working to help make businesses gangbusters with creative direction (something I just got hired for and didn’t even advertise that I did!) What I’ve found is this: If I’m focused on my writing (which is my business) then other opportunities to work with others (that involve writing and creating and awesomeness) find me. To have one (and only one) focus has been a total game changer. If it doesn’t fit into joy or writing – well it gets pruned.

I should also say the “writing” includes any project for a client that has a beginning, middle and end. A story to support their business or actual writing with them…the other funny part is that with this fluidity, when the opportunities find me, it’s my clients that are telling me what my job is (what problem I’m fixing for them) when they come to me. The perfect example is my friend calling and saying “I need you to be my creative director – can you do that?” Joy – YES! Writing/Creativity – YES!

The moral of the story – with focus opportunity finds you.

Thanks for this today, Marie! It’s such a fun process.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Beautiful, Licia! I love how you’re crystal clear on what you want and the gifts you bring to the world. And your #1 note reminded me of a Marie quote I think you’ll like, “If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.” 🙂

  7. Ali

Oh man! I can’t wait to watch this on my lunch break! It sounds like exactly what I need for this new year. Downloading the calendar now – great idea!

Looking forward to reading everyone’s answers too!

  8. Emmet

No money. My list needs money.

    • Sheri Smith

Follow your PASSION – the money will follow. If you are focused on DUST… there is no hope! Just sayin’

  9. Ali

I love this video, so helpful and FUN. It made me smile, so thanks for that Marie 🙂

I’m committed to starting a free workout/support group in the city biweekly to help serve those who can’t afford it. I never want people who are eager to live a healthier lifestyle to feel that it’s out of reach due to money. I’ve wanted to use my Spanish for a long time in my business and finally had a lightbulb moment that philanthropy is the perfect place to do just that! I’m excited to really serve my community and look forward to bringing people together and watching the relationships grow!

On the business side, I’m committed to hosting my first retreat locally with 2 other gals in my field in June. I feel great energy when I’m with them and know that we can make a big impact on others through the power of collaboration!

Thanks again for this great video Marie, Happy New Year! Here’s to an AWESOME 2017!

    • Mary Lahti

What a great thing to provide a way for people to stay fit for free. I’ve thought of doing that as well but haven’t figured out ‘legally’ how to do that and be protected. All the best with that and your other goals.
      Mary (just a reader)

      • I have just watched your video and realised such an important thing. I have been procrastinating for two years! With ideas spinning around in my head it was too much and so I did nothing.
So this year I am committed to getting my business idea off the ground and getting my website up and running. As you suggested, I have written down everything and now know where I need to start. Thank you for helping me focus my vision and giving me the kick that I so needed.
The payoff will hopefully be that I spend more time working at home and get to see more of my husband instead of being at the office working long hours for someone else, and because the work I do will be for myself, I will be a happier, self sufficient, calmer person.
I am hoping that my products will encourage larger women like myself to get out there and improve their health and also help them to feel confident not self conscious while doing it.
I know for this project to work I have to change. In wanting to help others like me I will need to become a more confident, outgoing and assertive person who chases her dreams with passion.
I am pruning the time I spend working my socks off for others and chasing that next promotion. From now on my focus will be on what is good for the future of my family.
        Thank you!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s amazing, Ali! What a cool way to give back. We’re sending tons of love your way for you and all your future students.

  10. This MarieTV episode came at the right time! I’m so frustrated with myself, pursuing different things at the same time and of course: get overwhelmed. I’m now at a crossroads having to choose between two major things: sustaining the old (a teaching practice for speaking and singing) or going forward with a new thing I created recently. I followed an impulse from last week, after a period of time where I felt really stuck. And through this impulse, everything started to move again. But it became something completely different from what I ever have done before. It’s even in English, which is not my native language. And all that is scary. I took the first steps in already claiming a domain name, creating a Facebook page, setting up a way for people to register with me and I wrote down some ideas. But I feel overwhelmed because I know have two big things, and at least one of them should provide some income. But none of them do at this moment. I haven’t been attracting new clients in my old thing, and I haven’t found a way yet to create an income with the new thing. I’m like stuck in the middle, feeling outgrown the old thing but not yet feeling ready for the new. And sustaining both feels like a lot of work and that also overwhelms me. It’s like I’m still stuck in 2016 with a 2017 idea on the roll, not really sure how to go forward. Any tips or advice?

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

This is a really good question, Daisy! It might be helpful to make a slow transition or to do both until you’re ready to move fully into your new venture. A couple of MarieTV episodes came to mind as I read your message:

      • Thanks ever so much, Mandy. I will give it some more thought and reflection and go back to the episodes you’re sharing here with me. Thank you !

        • UH

          Hi Daisy,
I can absolutely relate to your situation. For the last two years I have wanted to bring my new business to life, neglecting the old one with the result that neither of them generated enough income. “Between the years” as we say in German, i.e. in the time between Christmas and New Year that I always use for reflection I have finally decided to give up my old business. I can’t tell you how relieved I feel now. But it took me a while to make that decision and in retrospect, I think I just wasn’t ready any earlier. So I hope you can be okay with yourself for not knowing where to go yet. And once you do know to go in your desired direction with fresh energy.

  11. Happy New Year, Marie!!
Oh how this speaks to me and I’m guilty and I know it. My pruners are dull. So, okay fine. I’ll sharpen them.
The Payoff: I’ll start to get an income for doing what I love to do.
The Impact On Others: To be able to feel free and have fun while helping to shape people’s creative path into action.
Who I Will Become: An entrepreneur – a smarter person open to giving and sharing more of my talents to help others.
Pruned: Bought a bag of prunes (I keep forgetting how good those things are). And, pruned back on the Acting career into smaller goals so I can focus on the current bigger picture.
Thanks! I just knew what you were going to say in this video. And it was fun to watch (great actors in that crew). And there were such pretty colors to look at. 🙂

  12. Rufus Akinkugbe

Marie, you are doing a fantastic job the video is inspiring. Really I have learnt a lot from the video not to carry overload of thoughts, if I can purge/prune, I shall be helping myself. This year I want to be creative self employed.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s so great to hear, Rufus! We’re so glad Marie’s wisdom was just what you needed to hear.

  13. Robert Cyr "Truckin Bob"

This episode couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m totally overwhelmed where to begin. I have so many things I want to accomplish this year on so many levels. Just jotting down the purge list is almost depressing. Way too ambitious! Time to purge and focus.
Goal one with the biggest return for all, is the house and business expansion.
The biggest nix is to remove all the like to do’s with little return. There are many. As you said if I crush the big ones I can always add later.
    Thank You for this episode!
    Truckin Bob

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

I felt the same way when I made my own list. Those little things really add up and can be distracting when we’re trying to accomplish the bigger things. I’m so glad this exercise was helpful!

  14. This hit home today – so many things to do, so little time! Working on actually launching my business by end of the first quarter. Need to start pruning as we speak!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Woohoo! We’ll be cheering you on for your launch, Lesley! 🙂

  15. Wohooo! Purge and Prune baby!
I have a huuuge project brewing for many years now and it looks like this is the year to pull the trigger! I am pruning everything else off the list so that this project can happen.

So what stays is the “sustainable residential community development” and running my current business (which is in it’s 5th year and running smoothly).

    1. The payoff for creating & building a housing development centered around people, “beyond organic” food and sustainable life practices is that I get to live in it!! I get a super smart home which works with nature, not against it. I get a community of like-minds, my little village, to gather with, create with, support one another and raise progressive kids in! I get the freshest food and I get to rebuild soil for future generations.

    2. This project will be beneficial to others in many ways. First off I get to create this dream come true not only for myself but for 20-25 other families. Our local farmers will get our support and will be celebrated as true heroes of the 21st century. People’s health will improve, nature all around us will be preserved. We will work with “at risk” groups to be involved in our farming and our community. And my true wish is that we serve as a model for future sustainable developments! It can be done and we are doing it!

    3. I will need to stretch to become the person to make this a reality. I will have to keep my fears in check by continued questioning and not letting them blur my vision or even stop me. This project requires a huge financial investment from myself and others. I will have to stretch my ability to speak about the benefits to make this happen to enroll others in investing. I will have to grow up and stop winning or wanting to hide. I will engage with my best self and bring it forth, the self that’s full of love and courage and the knowing that there’s no better time to let my light shine!

Thank you for the space for me to cultivate and grow my dreams for the last 5 years!! I love what you give me. Wishing you and your team an awesome, kick ass new year! May LOVE prevail!

    Tivoli, NY

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

What a beautiful vision, Bruna! We’ve got our fingers crossed your vision will be brought to life. 🙂 Sounds like the kind of place I’d like to go to for a retreat.

  16. Victoria

This was very helpful for me in setting the goal in keeping up with my relationships. I’m committed to 1 date a week with my honey, 1 dinner a week with my parents, and at least 1 touch point a week with my friends. Marie, Thank you so much!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Aww, wonderful! It sounds like your weeks will be packed with lots of love and fun. 🙂

  17. The one project or goal I’m committed to this year is to start my school and all around wellness/ help center for veterans, seniors, and disabled adults and kids…….to provide service dogs….also helping rescue dogs……this will benefit me on a emotional level and mental level, and help others overcome and or deal with their issues in life! This will help the world around me, give back to America, help family friends, animals, the land we call our home, and me!

I’ve pruned the little things that will get in the way out of my life, instead of running long runs keeping them short to have more time to dedicate to my work. I will have to become the person I was before the military actually, dealing around my PTSD!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

You have such a big heart and it’s evident in your dreams for 2017. I know all the people and dogs who work with you will be so glad they did. What a beautiful way to give back. <3

    • Pamela I’d like to put a link to your services on my blog, would you be interested in writing a blog post about what you do?
      Shaping Purpose

  18. Thank you for this reminder. I love to do this when I’m stressed, but doing it BEFORE I get stressed seems like a better approach.
Doing my brain dump right now!

  19. This was the first email in my inbox today—perfect timing! I just finished setting some big goals for the year and I am totally guilty of trying to do too many things. This year, I’m solely focusing on doing projects in sprints instead of trying to do them all at the same time. I’ve got three main things I want to do: launch my podcast (and grow subscribers), launch my ecourse (which is currently being soft-launched), and finish the first draft of my book. Of course, all those things have lots of sub-projects, and depending on how successful some projects are, they’ll likely lead to other projects, but I’m only taking on things that offer ROI. Because of this, I’m automating a lot of processes in my business and am cutting a bunch of projects off for it in order to focus on my passion project, which already has more traction even though it’s pretty new. Exciting times!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Good thinking, Rikki! It sounds like you’ve got a really smart approach to getting these bigger projects completed this year.

  20. Coming off a work frenzy the end of 2016, i have entered the new year with a sense of panic and anxiety. My thoughts feel jumbled and I am feeling depleted. I have even brought my goals into focus. I trust this is part of the process and I need to sit with it. It feels horrible though.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Oh no! I’m really sorry to hear that, Maria. It may help to break down bigger goals into more manageable chunks so it’s easier to know where to begin. That may help keep the anxiety and overwhelm at bay. We’ve got our fingers crossed you’ll feel better soon!

      • Thanks Mandy. I will be fine. Sometimes just giving it a voice helps. I like your advice a lot. I got most of the stuff in my head down on paper. Also helpful. Thanks again.

  21. Groovy song, Marie!
    1) 2017 Project – Complete the (mostly finished) Become Passion killer online course for Couples who want their Mojo back. Launch it. Run the course twice in 2017. Payoff? Move from Hobby to Business. Impact? Help a heckuva lot of couples who fell in love with ease but have lost that loving feeling. Become? More ruthless at saying no to other projects
    2) I will say “no” to sexy juicy speaking gigs…the time, travel, and mental energy they take, though I love it, is counterproductive to getting the Become Passion course DONE.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s really smart, Dr. Cheryl. It can be really difficult to cut back on things we really enjoy, but recognizing the ROI (investment being not just money, but time and mental energy, like you said) is always a good idea.

  22. VJ

    3 Filters
    1. I’m going to explore becoming a coach and answer a call I’ve been running from for years. 2. If I do this I believe I can help people around me (friends, family, others) who like me are really struggling to find clarity. 3. In order to this, I ‘ll need not to let fear and false perception cloud my judgement of what I believe to be true for me.
    Prune Goal:
    2. Stop internalizing companies’ “thanks for your application but no thanks rejection”. Not finding a job that aligns with my experience and educations has all but sucked the life out of me. I’m pruning this one down to the root.
Thanks Marie and team, I need this.

    • Von

VJ, if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were writing about me. Seriously, word for word. Job rejection hurts, especially when you know your worth and experience. Maybe the universe is telling us it’s time for us to heal our minds and move on for the betterment of our soul. I hope the best for you 🙂

  23. Goal:
Open my business in a retail outlet to allow it to flourish.
The payoff is going to work in a place I love, every single day.
Impact on my family will be more quality time with me as I will be less stressed.
I will have to become more assertive and open about how things need to work.
One thing I have pruned is a party-plan side business that was taking too much focus away from the real goal, because it was quick and easy to earn from it. It feels like I have more clarity and less distractions (less to take my time up).

Thank you for this Marie. I now feel like my big goal is achievable!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Awesome, Suzanne! It can be scary to cannibalize an income stream, but it’s a smart move when you know it’s not moving you toward where you want to be in your business and life.

  24. Good advice Marie but I would suggest having people focus on just one goal for the next 3 months, not 6 or 12. The reason is because achieving one goal will affect more than one sphere as you call it. For example if low energy is a problem becasue of lack of exercise or sleep, by addressing this issue will have a direct impact on one’s relationships and also on work and enjoyment of life

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Different things can work for different people, so we encourage you to trust your inner wisdom and do what’s best for you. There’s no right or wrong way to set your goal(s) as long as you’re making it work for you.

  25. This is great. I’ve already been going in that direction. Last year was all about finishing my MS and launching my book, which got reviewed in the New York Times! (Hooray!) Anyway, my point is that 2016 was very hard and emotionally overwhelming. As much as I want to do amazing things this year, I just don’t want that kind of life. It’s not worth it. I want to be more present with my girls and family. I have buckets of my 2017 broad goals, each month planning what needs to happen in those buckets and planning my time so there are boundaries of no work on weekends or evening. Plus daily exercise or me time. This means a lot less time for work or distractions. Happy to purge distractions, but will also purge real work too, and that’s OK.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s fantastic, Rebecca! Self care and taking time to enjoy life are super important. We hope you enjoy this year and live it up! 🙂

  26. Haseena Bheekhun

    To Marie and The Team

Happy New Year and Thank you for this video and the tools provided to make real changes. “Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decision.” – Tony Robbins. Change can happen at any time of the year.
It’s great how you break down the psychology behind the stress behind the goals and how to tackle making goals that will actually happen. Achieve the best results and prune it down. Thank once again and I know that people can apply this throughout the year.

  27. Happy New Yer from Sweden!
This is soo gooood!! Thank you for sharing!
One goal? That is pretty hard…:
No 1 2017. Figure out how to “Growth hacking” for my small business = increase sales = staying power plus expand my business.
Impact on others? I do not employ people but there are quite a few other companies around any business like suppliers of storage, yarns, webshop, system, advertising etcetera. Also the better I do the better I buy – ex organic yarns.
No 1 January 2017. Finishing a knittingbook in English with a collection of 10-12 georgeous shawlpatterns. I have bought the patterns, translated them into Swedish but the idea came up in my head bec the English designer ran in to some lifechanging events – trying to figure out how to share it – the patterns are there already in English. Maybe a question for team Forleo: Any advice on the best way (and where) to issue a book – a download to begin with?

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Awesome, Charlotte! That’s a really good question. There are a lot of different approaches to releasing a book, so it’s important to do what you feel is best for you. Marie self-published her book first, then it got picked up by a publishing house later. That doesn’t always happen and self-publishing may or may not be the best thing for you, so definitely research your options to decide.

      • Thank you – that is good to know. I figured Kindle would be good but then maybe you are right, better reserach more first. Started with the book bec otherwise it is just talk…better to have something to show.

  28. Aloha Miss Marie,
I finished my screenplay, People Make Plans, inspired by true events. Now I am GOING to get a development deal. The odds are huge, but not insurmountable. You must believe and then listen to your intuition… right? I wish you would interview Mr. Paul Scheele (Paraliminals)… he’s given me tools to re-train my brain.
I’m 62 so making this film won’t change who I am, just where and how I will live since I walked away from everything in Hawaii that took me 20 plus years to build.
I’ve already had my 15 minutes, dare I ask for another? I catered for Char (world-famous psychic, she told Kelly Ripa she was preggers ON AIR back in the day) and recently saw her for a private reading and GULP… she nailed it (told me all about it) and felt she would SEE it. I am starting over due to a BiPolar soon-to-be-ex and had to kill my best friend, it will be 3 years and that part I’m still not over. I walked away from everything in Hawaii Nei. So here I am, back in SoCal as if the last 15 years was a dream or a nightmare… I have to believe it was for a reason…what was I meant to learn? I used to be gatekeeper and read for some of the top guys in Hollyweird so I know it’s “good” and an 80-year-old producer friend said, it doesn’t matter if it’s good or you have talent, look at all the schlock that gets made. Uh yeah, he’s right.
One of my goals for this year – how do I ask you to follow me on Twitter? @CateringSoCal. And a how do you plow through all that noise? It’s a distraction, no? But necessary, yes? I call it brain drain. The good news is that I got a producer mentor who’s made 20 films (I’m not his genre) but he believes in the project. So, that’s one thing I got done – last year. Things have certainly changed in the business of show. I will say that listening to your Tuesday e-blasts keeps me focused, inspires me and I say: mahalo!
You are never too old to LEARN! Aloha and keep up the great work… please.
p.s. I have NEVER posted or shared on someone’s site – you did it!

  29. Claudia

Before I watch this episode I was already having a similar tougth. Last year I pushed my self so hard that I ended Up at the hospital. Now I try to keep it simple but meaningfull.
I apologize if my english is not right , but is not my native languaje.
Thank you Marie and Team for this episode, really makes me want yo stay focus.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Oh no! Self care is really important, Claudia, so we encourage you to take care of yourself. Listening to your body will help you feel better, do your best work, and keep stress and overwhelm at bay. (Also, your English is great!)

  30. OMG – you guys have way too much fun. My goal is to have that much fun with all my goals this year!

I’m diving into a scary new corner that I’ve always wanted to explore, but was too chicken. I’m looking into the field of Worship Design, if I can call it a field – as I haven’t been able to find anyone with this title, yet. Maybe I’ll be the first!

The impacts…creating worship experiences that deepen individual spiritual paths and strengthen community.

The benefits to others…people feeling more wholeness and belonging.

Who will I have to become…I gotta own the title, even if it comes with some level of outside judgment; fill in some gaps in my experience including visual design and technical stuff like video, lighting, projection; continue reaching out to find my tribe or else become a leader who attracts a tribe.

What will I prune…I’ve been a music educator for over ten years, and I cut back my teaching by a bunch already. I can’t financially cut anymore, yet! I’m allowing my mind to realize that I’d likely have to cut teaching altogether at some point. Also cut back some of my community involvements to make room for explorations. And a BIG one – I deleted my Facebook account because it was a huge distraction in my life!

I’m SO pumped for this year. Thanks, Marie! Calendar is blocked OUT! Boom. Bring it!

    XO, Melissa

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s pretty cool, Melissa! It’s great to hear you’re owning your title and not letting the uniqueness of your gifts make you self-conscious about sharing them. As Marie says, “the world needs that special gift that only YOU have.”

  31. I’m one of those multi-goal planners! I’m using your list because it completely applies to me: to get in better shape, improve my health, write a book (yes, really!!), make more money, grow my business, renovate our relationships, take more time off or — in some way — experience a more extraordinary life?
I have no clue what to purge yet from my mile long list – but what I do know… This list is taking me away from my family. That changes starting now!
Number one goal – spend time with my family – my work needs to stop pulling me away from them.
Number two goal – be focused when I am working – look at each session as a project, start it and finish it within a week.
Number three goal – redesign my branding for my studio – new policies, business plan, pricing, website, blog and marketing materials.

    Filter –
    If it’s something I don’t love to shoot – don’t do it!
If I’m stressed and anxious and the project is taking time from my kids – let it pass me by.

  32. Great video and exercise! Super simple and super doable!!! Thanks Marie. I am planning on sharing and promoting my book “fit for life” which gives moms the 5 shifts to be fit and focused and be the mom , role model and wife they’re ready to be. Last year was all about focus so not much to prune on my list. My payoff in sharing will be to gain more clients and help moms create healthy families. The best ripple effect!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

      Yay, Jane! 🙂

  33. I’m so happy you did this video. I spent the month of December in Britain and completed a vlog for my YouTube channel almost every single day of my trip, leading me to feel more secure in what I’m presenting to the world- which is just me really. So on Christmas, as I chilled out with my bad self in a hostel in South Kensington, I wrote ALL possible goals I wanted to achieve this year. I filled up three journal pages making lists and charts, musing over my core desired feelings, and loving it all. But then on New Year’s Eve, cozy in my LA apartment once again, back in “reality”, I crossed off the things that didn’t make me feel that thing- you know, the gut feeling thing. And I ended up LOVING my list which is more concise and realistic than some of last year’s goals- all of which I achieved or manifested to some degree, but fell short in certain areas where I simply wasn’t ready to grow and expand. I also always love to add “dream” goals- many people think we should only put goals that we can work toward with action steps and all that, but I put dreamy things like “go to a super-cool exclusive LA event”, and then I get invited as a guest by a friend or something.
Love you Marie and team, happy 2017!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

So awesome, Tara! I’m so glad you had a wonderful time in Britain and that your list of goals has been narrowed down to the things that really light you up.

  34. HNY! My inbox felt very sad without you the past two weeks. AND so happy you took the time and enjoyed it.
This was the perfect first 2017 video. I had already decided that my ONLY goals this year,
(at least to start with) are to finish my website – due out any day. and teach in groups. I already have one group retreat scheduled and I plan to have a minimum of 2 more this year.
The payoff is getting to do what brings me Joy. Conversation about Spirituality and metaphysics – for hours at a time =Heaven. And the income will be great as well.
Love and Light to you all?

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s really smart, Pamela! I hadn’t considered focusing on one or two goals for the first half of the year and focusing on another one or two for the second half. I can see how that would be helpful, especially for folks who may not be crystal clear on what they want and need more time to figure it out. Also, limiting your options can make for good focus!

  35. Yes its 2017, i wish to work for more more invest in agriculture, business and in education of my children once im done here it will be my happy moments, money , peace and what to eat, education is a must clothings mention but a few.

  36. Mimi

My number one goal this year is to actually ACT on my ideas! I think too much, I analyze a ton, and don’t take action. Or, I take a step or two, feel discouraged, and either give up or procrastinate. This year, I will connect with creative people and entrepreneurs in all stages of the process and build the support system I need to act on my ideas and not give up!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Right on, Mimi! I thought of two Marie quotes as I read your message: “Progress not perfection,” and “Start before you’re ready.” I hope these mantras will inspire you. 🙂

      • Mimi

Thank you, Mandy! Yes, believe me, these are things that I know intellectually. However, actually internalizing these ideas and making them in to core beliefs is painfully slow and difficult! I’ve still got a long way to go in stopping my procrastination, doubt, and perfection, but I will find a way!

If anyone else is struggling with these issues at any stage of your ideas/project/business and need some support, please let me know by commenting with your email address. I would love to connect with and create a network of creative people and entrepreneurs to help each other!

I live by the water in sunny Saint Petersburg, Florida, if you live in the cold and need some pictures of the beach or other reminders of warmer weather, I can help with that too! ;O)

    • Mariah

I love this. I do the same thing and then ruminate about how I never accomplish or finish anything. Way to go on not wanting to give up!

      • Mimi

Thank you, Mariah! Often, what we need is someone close to us to point out this pattern and put into perspective the ways in which we sabotage ourselves and our progress. Have a great weekend!

  37. Andrea Naranjo

I’m always looking forward for Marie’s new episodes, they have helped me a lot throughout this past year. Now this video is so helpful to kickoff 2017! So here are my 2 parts:

My #1 goal throughout this year is to sell all my books that I recently published on Dec. 22. My payoff besides a financial one, is that this book will get me out there into the media and recognized amongst more people as a health coach. This book will be my best presentation card ever. This will impact others because the book itself is a self guided how to book that teaches you how to feed yourself properly in a physical, emotional and psychological way. In order to do this I will need to become a passionate sales and persuasive person. I am super passionate and persuasive when I try. But I will have to work a little harder as a sales person. So I am ready and committed to take the challenge!

On another note one project that I pruned as a result of this process is to lose those last 10 lbs that I’ve been trying to for a couple of months, but the fact is that I feel great like I am and eventually I’ll lose them or not. With the filters I realized there is no clear payoff out of doing that so I let that one go for now.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Congrats on your book, Andrea! It sounds like you have a really good plan for how you want to share it and how your book will help you grow your business.

  38. I love variety in my life and I provide a boat-load of offerings to my students and clients. This video was very timely and helpful, because this year I’ve decided to prune a few branches so I can begin to see growth in new and exciting ways. Thanks you Marie for ‘getting in there’ and shaking things up a bit. (Literally and figuratively)

I’m committed to expanding my transformational movement classes and House Dowsing in the Minneapolis area as well as across the country. The pay off will be more exposure and many more people will benefit from me opening the flood gates and sharing what I do. I will have to step into more of my authentic self by getting comfortable with being more in the spotlight and willing to market myself with ease, flow and grace.

  39. Mary

Get my career empowerment coaching business launch.

    1) be my own boss, no more clock punching, more time to take care of me, and the ability to take my work with me when I move
    2) help people gets jobs/careers they’ll enjoy while making good money (not just the top 10%, anybody), this will improve life’s and communities.
    3) I need to stretch and become more confidence, more out going (big stretch for me). I need to be more in tune to my peers. Most career coaches work with the upper level, I’ve never been in the upper level so I bring a uniqueness to the role.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

We’ll be cheering you on, Mary!

  40. Tatiana

I’m going to take the training for my new job. I will move to another state. I will get well paying but I will live far from my boyfriend. I hope we can save our relationship. I really need his help and support. I decided to burn my relationship for future career opportunity. I feel that it will help me get more respect from my boyfriend because I become more independent and experienced.
    Happy new year Marie!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Happy New Year to you too, Tatiana!

  41. I am going to really work hard this year and be successful in my online business.

  42. My big goal for this year is to make time (quarterly) for meaningful video projects. I would like to create a few videos that have meaning for me personally, so that I can really get insight into how to be the best video artist I can be.

I pruned quite a few superficial things off my list. “Decorate my house cuter”, for instance, is less something that I actually want for my life and more succumbing to that “Instagram perfect” peer pressure. It feels good to make the conscious choice not to let that bother me!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Great “prune” idea, Kelsey! Instagram can be lovely, but it definitely can add pressure we just don’t need in our life. We’re cheering you on for those video projects!

  43. Ben

My #1 Goal for 2017 is to earn $222k in revenue for Empress Royal Portraits, which will generate $160k in personal income.

I had to eliminate several things from my list, but the #1 I’d have to say would either be beating every game in my library or writing a book.

It was hard to let go, but I just do not have the time or resources to make either of those happen.

  44. I usually get super excited about New Year’s resolutions, and I’ve been so “meh” about it this year. I’m pretty sure politics have me down…I have more concerns going into this year than aspirations. Anyway, the video was inspiring and funny, so I’ll give it a whirl.

    Thanks Marie and Team,

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

I so hear you, Caroline (love your name, btw! 😉 ) Your comment made me think — I wonder if some of those concerns and worries you have could be aspirations in disguise. Sometimes when things in our world are particularly painful or difficult, it can be a call to us to examine what’s really important and how we can contribute or help others, even if it’s just by living the best life we can and setting a good example.

  45. Hi Marie!
My #1 project is to continue creating and improving my the blog. I began it last year and wasn’t sure 100% sure I wanted to continue with it. After watching this video and doing my purge & prune I know it’s the thing I’ll be the most committed to.

My purge, for now, is my book projects. I have so many book ideas. I’ve actually begun writing a few. I love them all so much the idea of not working on them is hard, but it just feels overwhelming to continue to work on them right now. So, to the back burner they go. I know I’ll pick them up again later when the time is right. Phew! Freedom!
It feels good to put this on pause and focus my energy on just the blog so I can make it good for myself and others and something I’m truly proud of. Also, I know I’ll be able to show up for my other 2 jobs more positively and effectively by putting this on pause. Again, being my best wherever I’m needed and choose to show up is important to me.
Thank you so much for helping me find my focus and your consistent good energy and encouragement!
    Happy New Year!

  46. jane

great video! i like the pruning visual, i have a large garden and I am reducing it this year so i can manage it and use my time to really focus on my number 1 project, MY ARTWORK which i have neglected the past year. Focus and purge to give myself what is really important to me and others…Love it.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Wonderful, Jane! Wishing you an art-filled year ahead 🙂

  47. Teresa

    Amazing wisdom..
I want to get healthy, mentally strong, practice daily meditation, get married this year, create my own business, and do some philanthropy work towards children.. Now I am not able to identify which one I can prune.. I mean my entire day is consumed by the worry of starting my own business.because the struggle is between location. Should I do it at my native place or the place where I am going after my marriage. The place where I will be settling after wedding is expensive and starting a business there is an expensive affair. But in my native place if I start I have a handful of months and then I will have to leave that business and go for my wedding and this can cost me staying away for almost 3 months. Atleazt.

  48. KIM ROWE

    Hi Marie,
Thank you for the Marie TV enlightenment today regarding 2017 and its moments, days, & months. SO simple and SO very real. SO speaks to the attainment of the truly rewarding dreams in our lives and enjoying a joyful time on our good Earth.
    Best wishes & love,

  49. Hi Marie
Thanks for this great video ! I’ve shared your nonnegotiables idea with my tribe on FB . It was a real inspiration to me as is this video . I’m going through cancer right now for the second time along with building a new career as a kid and biz coach . I’ve found building my tribe as a huge priority and now realise I’ve ignored my health situation a bit . The cancer is in my bones and I need transfusions every month . Sometimes ( like Christmss) I just want to belong to the healthy humanity and get out of the constant cancer club syndrome . My oncologists says in drawing at the moment . But we need to win ! I’m not a fighter , I’m a lover and see my challenge as a message I need to understand . So I’ve just realised I can’t ignore what’s happening . A rude awakening tomorrow as I have a trip to hospital . I’m in pain at present so I’m scared I won’t get the chance to do all the goals on my list . I’m normally very very positive and picture myself hugging you one day and Oprah and Richard Branson ! All my idols . I see myself speaking to the masses and doing my party piece ” singing in the rain ” on TV to lighten people’s lives .! I’ve plans to speak at networks in the states because I feel I was meant to be born there ! I’m more American crazy than Irish mad !! So my first and main goal is to get my bone marrow producing blood ! I want to go to the Tao Centre for healing in Thailand as I love that they embrace eastern and western modalities . I need to work to raise the money so my workshops I’m promoting are my way of doing that . I want South to give back and I founded a charity locally that gives small treats to people affected by cancer and it’s a huge success . I need to do the same for me to give myself a chance of survival yet I’ve been ignoring that . Thanks for reminding me . I’ll get to Thailand and get well and share it with the world the importance of bringing together ( just like. Hug ) the benefits of mind body and spirit all working together for uptimum health and vitality ! I’m a juicer , ( was a runner but yoga now and a fan of Chris Karr) so I’ll get back on track . Lots of love to you and your team and Josh ( who I sat beside at the launch of Chris’s book in New York . Flew over with gifts for you guys in the hope of a hug but maybe next time ) lots of love
    Nida x

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Nida, thank you so much for your comment and sharing your thoughts and goals. It sounds like health is such an important priority for you right now, and it’s absolutely okay to focus on that if you need to. We’re sending loads of love and healing wishes your way! ♥

  50. Lovie

I love and adore you Marie! Thank you!

  51. Karen

I loved the Purge & Prune video and activity. I am accustomed to mind mapping and writing down every single thing that goes into a project, but I have never been taught the purge. Oh, my! So I went from a list of 15 items to work on this year to five. I think the filters are an amazing part of this process and found answers there I had not expected, mostly about how I need to change to make these goals a reality. Thank you. So here goes. My number one goal is to be healthy (after a cancer scare in 2015, this is high on my goal list. This includes eating better and exercising:
Filter #1: Payoff is feeling good about myself a) strong, confident knowing I am healthy, b) less stress and not beating myself up for being “bad”, c) fit into my clothes better, d) feel good about my firm legs and belly.
Filter #2: This will benefit others because a) they will not have to worry about me, b) others can look to me as an example
Filter #3: To make this goal a reality, I will have to: a) become more disciplined, b) change my mindset about feeling deprived, c) change my mindset about seeking social approval, d) plan schedules and meals, and snacks, e) spend more time cooking healthy meals, and f) research recipes
    Happy 2017 to you all.

  52. jutta

just great – thank you so much – it is exactly the kind of help I was looking for!!!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

We’re so glad to hear that, Jutta! I hope you enjoy the purge and prune exercise and find it so helpful for the year ahead 🙂

  53. Hi Marie,
Happy new year to all !!!

My goal is to lauch my message to the world… It is about the « Human of the Future » and the teaching is call « Stargate ».
In 2012 i was technically dead, i knocked on heaven door and they refuse me the entrance and send me back here to do my mission.
I healed myself completely with my inner self without prescription drugs wich i was supposed to take for the rest of my life after i left the emergency care at the hospital.
You see in my previous life i was what you would call an outlaw biker from birth untill 2012 selling drug and the lifestyle that come with it. Beside that i also had a motorcycle business and for one decade i was the number one world wide in my field, that brought me fame and a lot of money. Then it was the dark night of the soul and eventually i had lost it all and filed for bankrupcy in 2014.
This were it get interesting about the Stargate program that i have been developping. It is about life expectancy and the power that hide within all of us. I am a living proof of that, my body is under a process of renewing itself looking younger and counting down, i am healthy like i have never been. This is what i will be bringing to the world in a format like a game that a kid would understand. It is a language « talking to your cell » that will reach all human being on all level be about, Love-Money-Relation-Health. And on top of that it give you the power to expand your life expectancy to several century as you wish, as a human being can live in the same body five, six seven hundred years or more and become an eternal being as he wish. This what i am doing and i am a living example of that power that all human being on this planet has hiden inside… This what i will do for the Humanity… make them aware of their power with a deep sense of pure Love and Peace. Thank you all. To you Truth and Freedom!!!

  54. I am putting the final touches on a book called Change Your Life Day Trading Options.
The payoff for me is that it is an opportunity to put all of the B-School advice to good use and potentially earn enough money to live on and support some people in need. Trading is not for everyone, though there will be people who will be able to understand the strategies in the book and have some success after testing on paper until confident they will work for them. The plan is to release the book, a newsletter, have workshops, and eventually (by April) an online program.
Some of the things I will prune are projects at the “friends and family rate” where there is not enough money to warrant doing an excellent job and no one ends up being happy. Best to avoid.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Great tip on the “pruning,” Greg!

  55. This is just what I needed! The New Year just started and I’ve already been spinning my wheels with way too many goals. Marie’s exercises helped me gain clarity on where I need (and want) to focus my time.

With that in mind, my #1 goal became to launch a new self-publishing business (something I’ve been considering for a while now) to help authors and small biz owners write, publish, and promote their transformative books. I realized that launching and growing this business will help me achieve many of my personal financial goals, including creating an emergency savings fund, taking my husband and kids to Disney World, and donating to literacy causes that are near and dear to my heart.

I couldn’t bring myself to part with many of my goals but two that I did cut were to volunteer (for this year, I thought it better to focus my time on earning money that can be donated to worthy causes, but next year, who knows?) and to start a podcast (which sounds really cool but is way outside of my comfort zone and expertise so instead I picked a goal to be interviewed on other people’s podcasts and we’ll see what next year brings there also :)).

Thanks, Marie, for sharing your wisdom as always!

    • Forgot about the 3 filters. The payoff of launching this business for me is earning a higher income, making a greater impact on the world, and focusing on something I love (books and reading). The benefit for others is the ability for clients to use their book(s) to attract new clients, gain exposure, be seen as experts, earn royalties, grow their businesses, etc. There is also a benefit for readers of these books to have access to quality, affordable information to help them solve challenges, learn new skills, and potentially make life-changing discoveries. Who will I have to become with this goal? Considering that I will need a support team of designers, editors, etc. (whereas now I work on my own as a self-employed copywriter), I will have to become a leader, a thought that terrifies me (although it’s possible that my role as a mother has been a dress rehearsal that I’m hoping has helped to prepare me somewhat :)). I will have to become responsible for not just myself and my own financial obligations but will need to nurture and support a staff as well my clients.

  56. Oh I’m so loving this Marie, thank you!
It seems the simple process of writing down and purging is going to help tremendously.
One of my major goals for 2017 is to grow my Design School [D-School] but I need also to incorporate in this year, self-care. Too often, I’m in situations where personal life and professional life are intertwined and the borders are blurry. So I need to create boundaries for them both.

    My filters are
    1. The pay off for Design School will be to provide more [time] freedom for me to spend the time with friends and family. Something I really neglected last year.
    2. This will benefit me both professionally and personally. But it will also benefit my D-School members, and to give them my 100% focus – rather than 50% because I’ve got “many projects on the go”.
    3. To make this a reality I need to start changing many things – like scheduling time-out for friends and family – changing my mindset and start putting limits on when I’m available. Which leads me to creating a good habit of scheduling projects in my calendar and keeping to them. But I think the biggest mindset change for me, will be to go from service provider to teacher and mentor – which in itself needs to create different every day habits, skills, thinking, etc. I have lots to write down and think about.

Thanks Marie so much for this episode. Happy new year to you and the team.
    Kellie xo

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

We’re so glad you’re loving this exercise, Kellie! We’re sending our best wishes to you too for a Happy New Year ahead! ♥

  57. Brittany

Well, this could not have been more perfectly timed for me! Thank you for sharing this! I just signed up for the Copy Cure about 2 weeks ago, and I had sent an email thanking you, along with a Q for Q&A Tuesday. You guys had already left for winter break so no one got to read the email. Well, this was answered by today’s Marie TV episode! What a co-in-ki-dink!

My #1 goal (which is still quite broad, but I know exactly what it means to me) is to get back to basics. Work on good daily habits that will lead to becoming more organized, tidy, focused, and productive with my time. I am dedicated to doing something everyday that is good for my mind, body, and soul/spirit. And I am dedicating a specific, small amount of time for each. One Copy Cure video, a 20 minute walk at lunch, waking up 10 minutes early to pray and spend some time with God or meditate. Mind/body/spirit taken care of!

As far as pruning goes, the thing I am “putting off” is planning social fundraising events. That was something that I added to my plate and wasn’t giving the greatest payoff. This was taking away focus and productivity from my job, causing me to become scatterbrained and manic! I needed to tone it down a notch…especially with promoting so much on Social Media and getting to the point where I was bugging my friends and family and not getting great results with raising money anyway. Don’t get me wrong, of course fundraising has a great impact on the community, but the toll it took on me personally wasn’t worth it. At this time. Cuz I’m still a hot mess in many ways. 😉

I love this calendar. Like I said, your timing couldn’t be more perfect. Thank you so much!

Oh yay, Brittany! We’re so glad to hear that our timing this week was perfect for you, and we’re sending our best wishes for so much success with your goals this year. Also if you haven’t already, you’re more than welcome to re-send the email to us so we can read it and get back to you!

  58. Thank you Marie.

I will launch a new podcast this year about volunteering.

I work with the nearly and newly retired to create a retirement that matters, for themselves, their family, and their community. Volunteering can be an integral component to making a life that matters.

I spent the last quarter recording 15-20 minute interviews. I believe I have the technical details mastered to produce the podcast itself and enough material to support a weekly podcast for the full year. The challenge is marketing the podcast and building my mailing list using the podcast.

Ergo, my goal for the year is to become a podcast marketing guru. I know that will make a huge difference to me because marketing has always been stumbling block for me. This year I’m tackling it head-on.

My life will also become simpler this year because I’m purging one of two companies. The two had related goals but became too cumbersome to support. I’m trusting that this simplification will mean a great deal to my family: Look Dad’s happier!

My best to you this coming year in your goal-setting as well as purging.

    Ed Zinkiewicz
    …the retired guy

    • Ed! I’d like to know more about your podcast!
We have a course called “Shaping Purpose” and I think our Veterans Edition would benefit from your information about volunteering. Can you give me your site address?

  59. Chary Odere

    Hi Marie,
Compliments. Happy new year. I love your stunning looks. Thanks for the video, it’s quite awakening and has inspired me to set achieveable goals.
This year am going to be deeply committed to Charity. My continued involvement in raising funds through Adverts, personal savings and other indulgences, l believe will empower ” Empathy In Humanity Trust ” to reach out and serve humanity.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Wonderful, Chary! Thank you so much for your comment and kind words 🙂

  60. Such a cool video, love the song haha! Too cool. So my goal is to release the first two books in my new children’s book series and get them distributed into schools around Australia. These books will get reluctant kids reading and enjoying books and just having a good laugh among all the other stuff they have to do these days. The payoff is more passive income from the distribution, which gives more time to write. Who will I have to become? Well, more of me, and also more of someone who is ready to get out there and put themselves on the line.
What will I prune? Relationships that drain me and force me to be someone I’m not. Because that sucks.
Thanks heaps for the video, really cool. Have an awesome day!

  61. Heather Berry

Super helpful – that’s a great mini coaching session Marie – thanks so much!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Thank you, Heather! We’re so glad you enjoyed it. XO

  62. Diana

This was a great exercise! I’ve been carrying around all these plans in my head this year, and really needed to put them down on paper.

The one to keep is my info product/training program that I’ve been working on. It requires some more positioning, branding, and a cohesive internet presence, but I’m getting there.

The thing to put aside for now is a book I’ve been working on, an invention, and an entirely different info product. I actually marked my list with little notes about priority. Because I really couldn’t bear to prune entirely, I put a “would be nice” note in case I find myself with tons of free time. (I’m sure we all know how that “someday I’ll have some free time when everything calms down” works out. lol)

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

I love the “would be nice” idea, Diana. I keep a “do it later” list for the same reason and it’s nice to know that those projects and ideas have a home in the meantime!

  63. Gratitude & Happy New Year to Marie and all of Team Forleo!

The past few weeks have filled so many journal pages with “purging” and now with your video I was able to go directly into clarity and simplicity with your direction of “pruning.”

    One word summary…MEDITATE!

Me…committing to daily meditation, seated in stillness and silence.

For my loved ones…inviting them to practice, sharing benefits, offering guided gatherings, passing along resources that have helped me.

For the world…using my Instagram page to commit/create/share 108 actions in the year of 2017 that specifically ignite more meditation around the globe, ripple effect.

I believe that Meditation is the ultimate tool for every human to tap into Dharma, Healing, Abundance, Enlightenment.

Pruning: I was feeling overwhelmed by thinking I would need to return to a yoga-teaching schedule at a studio to offer my gifts/talents/beliefs, which in the past created too many hiccups in my other life commitments…so pruned that!

Actually…I meditated after your video, and am now able to sit and share my reply.

Deepest levels of peace and joy right now, to have one word that will drive all my actions, intentions, desires…with 108 measurable goals and timeline of 1-year.

I love you all more and more! Thank you for saving me from a gazillion more drafts and rewrites.

    Happy Meditating to All,
    Pure Joy,

  64. Sophia

I need a job so I can pay my bills and debts and keep a roof over my head and food on my table. That is my project for 2017.

  65. Great video. Sometimes, the purging and pruning is done for you.
I’m having to completely reconfigure most of my life right now. Splitting with my guy of 18+ years – so much upheaval going on here that it takes my breath away like a daily punch in the gut. I think I’ll watch it again because all I can even think about right now is job(s), new place — ugh. If it weren’t for all of my truly Goddess-sent amazing friends, I would have jumped off a bridge right now — oh — and my little cat too – who makes me laugh multiple times a day with her little antics. She puts toys in my lap to remind me to take play breaks from my aggressive job hunting, website building freak outs. So very very grateful for all the Grace in my life. It’s amazing how much you find out about how loved you are when your world falls apart.

  66. My major goals this year are to establish a daily routine (with room for spontaneity on non-project days) that will help lift my depression and decision fatigue. I intuitively know what this includes, and it will just take dedication and a nice rewards system to make it stick. I have a vision, and it’s calling me like a wolf baby missing its pack.

Goal 2 – launch an evergreen course on self-awareness and productivity – how to get things done by accepting who you are, making time for emotional work and challenging your current limitations/boundaries. Launch an open-close course with weekly support calls on “doing the emotional work,” putting you first, using mindfulness to understand how your feeling effect your decisions and perspectives.

How will this effect people positively? The course should go together nicely to help creative entrepreneurs know themselves better, and give them tools for more inner peace, focus and enhanced quality of life. This is my life’s work – I’ve been studying mindfulness both informally, and the past few years formally, since I was 18. I’m an expert in personal identity formation, cognitive retraining and making people laugh. If I can cultivate the courage and energy to give my gifts to others – we’re all going to be so filled with love, it will be impossible not to change the world (one person at a time, with lots of naps and wine breaks).

I haven’t pruned anything yet. I’m a perfectionist and overachiever. Maybe I’ll prune tomorrow when the excitement from making the list has washed ashore and the tide dies down.

XOXOXO to Marie and the Team! You’re always so supportive and wonderful. Happy New Year! I hope all of your dreams and goals come true this year.

  67. PURGE: My Critical Projects: Publish 1 fiction book, 1 non fiction book (both 90% written), and write and publish a short story of travel adventures

PRUNE: No time for a relationship! A man can wait till AFTER I become published and famous. 🙂

  68. Launch my health coaching business. I will prune searching and reading so many personal growth article which leads to procrastination.

  69. I am FINALLY, going to have my series of stress free styling guide videos out of my head and into the cyber space universe. I will start in 2 weeks, no postponing, cancelling or leaving the country. No more fear for me…only action!
My video program will finally allow me to reach more women without leaving my office, grow my business, help women stop stressing about dressing, and make me a much more technical savvy entrepreneur.

    • I will be needing those, Scarlett! So you can count on me to subscribe to the series! 🙂

  70. Amanda

to start to communicate positively with the man of my dreams. To start to date exclusively for engagement marriage. I will feel loved, loving, safe, cared about caring, have cuddles and kisses, company, friendship, build intimacy, my son will have another male role model and I will get to be taken out. My family would enjoy me having a boyfriend, settling down, I would have someone to take places and vice versa. My friends would be happy for me.

Also another very important one equally as so is to have a great relationship with my son. This would help me, him our family our jobs etc so much and friends etc helplines. community too. And give us both peace

  71. This was haaaaard. Things have been on my list for so long that I feel as if to cut them would be like cutting an arm. I’m determined to get my artwork printed on useable, wearable, decorative items that can be produced on demand and sold on an online platform. I’m letting go of painting murals, at least for 2017. What I cannot decide on is whether this is the year to study for the GRE, or to let it go to focus on things that would potentially PAY for graduate school one day.

  72. Thanks for the tools! I plan to watch again with my partner.

#1 Goal: Complete a successful culinary tour to Bucerias, Mexico in April. A full, profitable tour.
    a) The payoff is not only a profitable experience we can duplicate, but the opportunity to learn how to market. Right now we are very discouraged. Our marketing is not getting this trip in front of the right people and we have a lot to learn.
    b) Anyone who joins us will have a wonderful experience! But, it will also pave the way for future excursions that will reach many people.
    c) I will need to become a good marketer! I need to understand what I’m doing wrong and fix it fast! I also need to be more visible and courageous…share the trip opportunity even when it feels scary. And, I need more faith. This risk is really interfering with my sleep and ability to hope.

Pruned: I’m pruning my summer workshops. At least for now. Last year, the time was not worth the income. I know the workshops were great and that they will grow, but the stress I feel over them while I need to be focusing on our April trip is sapping my energy. Giving them up feels great! More space! Thank you!

  73. Marie,

oh how ive missed your show over the festive period! Exactly what we needed to hear to get us on track and love love love the 80s throwback.

This year for me is about getting my private health coaching business extremely profitable online, this will take me towards my goals of financial freedom and independance

I will need to focus on transformational and not transactional activities only in order to achieve this!

  74. Michele Featherstone

    Hi Marie,
Thank you for all that you put our in the world. I’ve been through some rough times over the past three years – my husband suffered two job losses and then had a serious health scare in the beginning of 2016, which has left him unable to work full time. I went from working my part-time consulting business for vacation and savings money to supporting our family full-time. It hasn’t been an easy road. I’ve had to take positions based on finances not on desire or growth opportunity. I still live with a lot of stress and my husband and I are working on many issues in our relationship (which we had before his health situation) and we are hoping to turn things around in 2017.

Thank you for the great Purge and Prune advise. For 2017 my number one goal is to start my online business.
Filter 1) There are two payoffs – One of our biggest issues right now is extreme financial stress. While I know that starting a business takes time to nurture and grow before bringing in income, I just feel it is my calling. I’ve contemplated this for almost two years and it’s time to make it happen. I will have the ability to focus on an subject area that I love and the other is the ability to make additional income which our family desperately needs to reduce stress.
Filter 2) My goal is to bring create a business that will solve a problem for many others, giving them the ability to grow and succeed in their jobs and businesses.
Filter 3) I will have to become a more focused person who is willing to make sacrifices to make the extra time and attention this goal will take.

  75. The number one goal I am working on it’s the exporting business.

I pruned my other business. I mean reduce or bean all my energy toward the funding which will make this happen. Currently, I lunched a web: just to sustain me at the moment. I have few miles to go so in the between, I have been hassling.

    Thank you for the tips

  76. Aleks

To be fair, I knew what would be left after I pruned, because but it was still not easy. I have to keep reminding myself that if I become disciplines and finish this project (a dissertation), I will have the time and energy for other projects that I must prune right now.

  77. Thank you Marie, this video really helped me finalize my goals for this year. I actually followed this purge/prune method, sort of, when I sat down to plan my goals last week, but this helped solidify my goals and clarify the “why” for me.

My #1 goal this year is to write. Branch #1 is to write and publish 1 blog post each week for the entire year. Branch #2 is to write an ebook.

The payoff of publishing each week is that it will help me build trust with my audience and grow my list. The payoff of writing the ebook is that it will be my first product and will hopefully help me to finally start making money on the side, it will help me grow my list and will hopefully help me to start growing a reputation in my field of personal finance. Also, maybe the biggest payoff is that once it’s done it will prove to myself that I can do this. I can start a project, finish it, and put it out into the world. I can do this!

How will it impact others? I haven’t finalized the topic of the ebook yet, but roughly it will be about how to budget or get control of your money/finances when you have a hectic life (because who doesn’t) and how to plan for that. My weekly blog posts will also be about various personal finance topics like that, so that will impact others by helping them learn to manage their money, save money, and get out of debt, and plan for the inevitable disasters in life so that lack of money won’t magnify the problem. It will also help them realize that it is possible to be good with money even if they’re not a financial wiz or if they’re terrible at math (I’m the worst!).

Who will I need to become? Someone who sits down and does the work instead of procrastinating! I will need to be clear on my goals (check! -thanks Marie!), I will need to be focused on those goals and the work needed to be done. I need to be motivated and excited to help my audience and not be afraid of what people will think or say. I will need to be ok with not being perfect and ok with making mistakes. I need to be ok with who I am and where I am at this time in my life. I need to be brave enough to accept advice and guidance from other, but follow my gut, my own path, and my own truth.

What have I pruned? #1: The idea that I need to post multiple times a week on every social media channel and that everything I put out there needs to look perfect and polished. This overwhelmed me last year and kept me from even writing because I felt like I couldn’t publish an article without an image, and of course that image had to be optimized for social sharing… It’s too much for me right now, so I did nothing. I’m not going to pressure myself to do that this year. I may post on social some, but only when I want to and if I feel it will help my audience and help me connect with them, and I won’t pressure myself to make it perfect.
#2: Videos. I wanted to create and publish videos in addition to my blog posts, but again, it’s just too much. I need to focus solely on writing for now. And only add more to my plate when I can handle it.

  78. Great advice. My goal for 2017 is to publish a book and I signed a contract to do that on December 30th. So this mom-of-three’s decades-old goal is on the front burner this year. I have taken massive action, written it three pages a week over the past year, and I am now ready to bring it to the next level. My other goals are to time block each day to get more accomplished. Thanks for the inspiration Marie.

  79. What’s the #1 goal or project I’m committed to bringing to life this year? It is attending B-School. I have wanted it for many years but each of the past years it would not have passed the test of the three filters, especially the one related to how it would have impacted others.
This year I certainly have to become a much different person to make this project come to life and it is scary but I am committed to doing it even scared otherwise I will grow very old and regret it when I am on my death bed I am pretty sure.
And sure enough, this time around I can make this project pass the three filters test as I can also see how it will finally teach me what I need to learn to make decent money while I am repairing the world one person at a time one day at a time.

Now the project I had to prune as a result of this process is difficult to say because going to B-School has been so pervasively occupying my mind for many months now that I did not dream that many others. I would probably need to become superwoman to do all the others and still care for myself. I have not yet enjoyed to letting it go completely (the dream of becoming superwoman) but maybe when I return to read this comment in some time, who knows?

    • Kristin - Team Forleo

Otir, we’d LOVE to have you join us for B-School this year. And don’t worry – you’re not alone in wanting to become superwoman. Just make sure you set aside time for yourself so you don’t burn out 🙂

  80. My big project is launching a healthy energy drink company!

The payoff is that I’ll launch this bad boy. And get closer to my goal of running a company. I’m looking to be a major Boss Babe.

Impact is that I’ll be happier, more satisfied and will be bringing this awesome bevy to life.

What am I pruning? Worry. I worry a LOT. That is a daily project I’m ready to say buh bye to.

    Thanks for this!!

Scheduled in. 2017 here we go!

  81. Hazel

    1. Find employment in a company that values me and pays well.
    2. Cut back on the number of trips I was trying to make happen this year.

  82. Linda

    Wow, very good and timely.
My one big overarching goal is to “restore and recharge my health” – usually this looks a lot of goals, i.e. Lose weight, eat better, reduce stress, get more fit, get financially fit, make and stick to budget, Improve my relationships….I’m exhausted….and they all start at the beginning of the year and I’m overwhelmed and I maybe accomplish one thing (last year it was mostly – figuring out my finances so I can retire this year or next from my long time job which was great right,, though I felt like a failure since I gave up on other things.) I’m showing myself more grace this year, and starting small and working on one thing at a time that I hope over the year will result in accomplishing substainable behaviors.
What I’m pruning is comparison, living up to others expectations and trying to do it all. Also, I’m not prioritizing relationships this year, as I truly believe as I start to feel better, better relationships/ social life will be a by product! If not, that will have to wait until later in the year or next year.

    • Ahhhh, that is one on my list too (pruning), not prioritizing relationships…. I like that you equate feeling better to having better relationships, without that being a goal or focus. I like it! Thanks for the inspiration!

  83. Whina

    Kia ora Marie and team,
Great, pithy thoughts and hints to help me through the big purge, and massive pruning…don’t worry I’ve passed it on to my team, my family and flatmates too. After all, sharing is caring. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thanks a lot team!

  84. The goal I am focusing on this year is launching a holistic health experiment that will lead to a book manuscript and coaching program. I’ve wanted to do this since 2012 and this is the year. The payoff is that it will allow me to experiment and learn what it means to live a mindful and purpose-filled life, and share this experience with others. The end result of this project will ultimately allow me to help individuals who feel like their life is cluttered with things they no longer need, want or created with purpose. To make this project work I need to become the writer, coach and researcher that I have always wanted to share with others. I’ve got to stretch out of my comfort zone and begin living my life as Corrie Ann, not someone designed by circumstances. I’m so excited about this year that I can’t help but beam with delight. This is happening!

I like the Punch, It has made discover that I have a lot do to do this year.
    How can organise these items
    1. Buy a car
    2. Purchase a plot of land
    3. start my construction project
    4. Get a family member
5.Add some suits to my wardrobe
    6. Brush up my resume
    7. Get a new job
Help me distribute this in the calender.

  86. Hi Marie,
Great video and perfect timing as goal setting is something I do around this time each year. I have to say the Purge and Prune process is a fantastic tool and your video has given me better knowledge on how I can improve and achieve even more goals in 2017 than I did in 2016.
Goal setting works!!! Last year I had about 7 main goals for the year and I achieved all but one (which will be achieved the end of this month). Thank you for your knowledge and help. I always enjoy my MF time each week 🙂

Cheer to more MF readers/watchers achieving their goals in 2017

  87. You’re great! My friends always tell me to do this but I hear you. The biggest thing I took from this is “what is the payoff?” Vital question to ask to NOT waste time- thank you

  88. Harold L. Fernando

Marie you are an angel sent to us from above,I had just decided to finish all my legal problems this year.Your purge and prune video talk was just the thing I needed to help me go through this. Come the end of the New Year I will let you know the result. Happy New Year. Harold

  89. Barry Hall

    Hi Mandy,
Happy New Year to you all. I hope 2017 goes well beyond your expectations. I will be focussing on my sales education even though I am now semi retired I can listen and watch such things as Marie TV and webinars and read posts etc. Thanks for everything. – Barry.

  90. Cris

I am trying to download the PDF through my mobile phone but there’s no field where I can enter my email and name.

    • Kristin - Team Forleo

Cris, I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble! I’ll shoot an email your way right now to help.

  91. Tatiana

Thank you so much for this video! Perfect time for it. It`s exactly what I was looking for.

  92. Love the video. Love the song too! LOL.

To spread the message of Deboxing, make the term an adjective, and share the amazing natural ability we all have to psychologically self-heal. I want to get the book – The Debox Revolution – into more people’s hands.
To do this I am focusing on speaking and trying to become a great valuable guest on influencers shows. (I’ve emailed you already yesterday).

The payoff will be an amazing feeling of making a difference by creating Debox coaches who can live a better lifestyle helping people to master this method, and getting 100,000’s of people changing their lives and becoming emotionally self-reliant, more confident and living their truth.
Another payoff will be financial security for my family.

I need to become an entertaining guest who’s relevant and interesting with the ability to create paradigm shifts in people who have yet to harness their natural ability to remove the cause of their emotional struggles.
I’ve begun this with my first TEDx talk in London October 22nd, 2016

Thanks for the video. I hope, one day soon, I get to be a guest on your show.

    Happy new year!
    Jay Roberts x

  93. I loved these tips! When I set my goals I even left out the purge part – only did it in my head 🙂 – and decided to really prune it down to 2 main goals. And it actually feels good to just focus on those. 🙂
    Happy New Year!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Awesome, Andrea! There’s power in focus, so I’m really glad you feel good about focusing on your two main goals.

  94. Happy New Year! Thank you, Marie, for all the passion, love, and personality you put into everything you do. You are an inspiration! My big goal for 2017 is to ramp up my blog – a diy floral design blog. Flowers bring us a unique joy and I want everyone to include them in their everyday lives. Prune = I really wanted to be in the position to launch my first product by May but after some soul searching I think the best thing is to delay that goal and focus on writing and teaching.
All the best in the new year!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

So cool, Jenelle! We’ll be cheering you on as you help people bring the joy of flowers into their spaces.

  95. My huge project that I’m working is is the release of 3 books in my epic fantasy series. I will need to focus on writing, editing and putting together marketing plans so I’ll need to be a productive entrepreneur this year. What am I giving up? I have to prune away active revenue streams that I don’t love and focus on my passive revenue streams including courses, blogging, and webinars. This will be a huge benefit to readers because they have been waiting for these books for years and keep bugging me about them! It’s great to write something that brings entertainment, enjoyment and has a deeper philosophical undertone. It’s time to get to work 🙂

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s fantastic, Angela! It’s really great to hear your readers are excited about your series. I know how excited I get when I hear my favorite author has a new book coming out, so I know they’ll be thrilled to support you.

Regarding your note about pruning active income streams you don’t enjoy, I think you’ll like this Marie quote (one of my favorites!): “If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.” Keep up the awesome work!

  96. lamson songthiang

Thank you marie for teacing me to built the business.

  97. Happy Prosperous 2017, to you Marie and every one of your team. I start with this: I appreciate what you do, and how you want each of us to go for our dreams.
Although my main goal is back to the basics, decluttering my home of anything that does not make me feel good, or does not serve me. 1) The payoff is more free time, as even thinking about too many possessions drains me mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. 2) Because I will have more spaces empty of clutter, I can invite clients into my home. 3) I must become more ruthless, to finally giving the boot to things that I have held for so many wrong reasons. Something that I have pruned: Letting go of the desire to get it all done, now, and the perfectionism that keeps me frozen, because the results are not up to my high standards. Enough, it is time to be open, to be flexible, and more important to be adaptable. It is going to be a fire year, astrologically so it will be important to know when to walk away and seek a shady tree, drink plenty of water, and to not stress because my plans change at the drop of a hat, including leaving the hat. My intention is to enjoy what happens, as it comes, appreciate it, and take a ride on the freedom train.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Thank you so much, Joanne! Your kind words about Marie and our team definitely made my day. 🙂 We appreciate you.

Your goals sound wonderful! In addition to having more free time and more space, if you decide to donate the items you no longer want then you’ll be helping people in need as well. A win-win all around!

  98. You are inspirational yet again! And your purge and prune pub guys are sooo hilarious!! You have me laughing and feeling like I can do this! Thank you Marie Forleo!

  99. Charissa

I’m so glad you acknowledge the fact that we are all in different places and are uniquely designed. I used to expect everyone I led to be just like me AND myself to be just like the people I admired. I look forward to doing this exercise!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Totally! We believe everyone has their own unique gifts and talents and that everyone is in a different place in their journey. As Marie says, “the world needs that special gift that only YOU have.” 🙂

  100. Your download would not download.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Hi Kati! I just emailed you a link to the pdf. 🙂

  101. One Fun & Powerful GOAL PAGE I made is thru my Pinterest Boards!! Pinned thru the year are quotes, pics, business, travel… ideas that inspire me! I copy a few pics onto one page and I put my personal tagline (over the yrs I have created just 3 personal taglines, they sum it All up).. put that on the top and ea day I can be inspired by what I want more of in my life. Txs Marie for being an inspirational teacher!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s awesome, Beth! Pinterest is like a giant vision board you can edit. 🙂

  102. syed ahmed

The number one goal is to be a life coach this year.
The payoff is that I will be seen as the go to guy for people wanting to live their dreams through travelling. I will be the coach for travelers!
It will provide someone with the expertise for like minded travelers to contact and get guidance on their dreams and goals.
I will need to act like the expert and the successful coach whose aim to help as many travelers/roamers as possible that need direction, guidance, accountability whilst travelling.

I have pruned looking at other opportunities and getting focused on one goal/project- The Travelling Coach so that I can help and serve my clients quickly and better.

  103. Number one goal: continue to create weekly videos on YouTube and cultivate a tight community of people who are dedicated to making their dreams come true

The pay off: pride, gratitude and truly making a difference.

How will it impact others: it will bring people together, create friendships, provide support and knowledge and help them feel like someone has their back.

Need to become: a leader, an authority in my industry and someone who is brave and courageous despite feeling uncomfortable at times!

    2. I’ve pruned the idea of creating an online program this year. It’s something that I really wanted to do, but I feel like at this moment it would only be a distraction as I want to focus on cultivating my community and learning more about what people want first!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Right on, Andra! It sounds like you’ve got a good plan. And pruning something this year doesn’t mean it won’t get done eventually. We’ll be cheering you on!

  104. I am going to focus on making my online coaching business thrive. I want to create an abundant and stable income from it.
I decided to put aside my traveling as a goal. I figured that, if my business is thriving, I will have enough money and freedom to make that happen. It will be like an extra bonus.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Good thinking, Paula! We’ve got our fingers crossed you’ll be a jet-setter soon. 🙂

  105. I was feeling really overwhelmed last night because of the projects that I wanted to do in the next 12 months. This video is awesome! It lifted a ton of weight from my shoulders.

    1. My number one project is my website. The payoff from this would be for myself, it will really be therapeutic because I’d be able to manage my anxiety. It will be a safe haven for people who suffer from a lot of stress in this world. It is a community that can open conversations with my fellow Filipinos who are not yet exposed to this mindset. In order to accomplish this, I have to be laser focused and disciplined.I have to really carve time in my day for this to come into fruition.

    2. I had to prune my weight loss goal. Losing weight has really been stressing me out my entire life. And so, I let it go. I’ll just focus on being happy without the pressure of losing weight.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

So glad this video came at just the right time, Kate! Your dreams are important and you’ll be in a better place to make them happen if you’re not overwhelmed. I’m so glad you’re focusing on your happiness, too—that really is the most important thing. We’re sending tons of love your way.

  106. I want to stand in the shoes of my new title…movement motivator.
I’m creating a 3 hour workshop to offer at yoga studios. II’ll kick it off in my home town and then take it on the road. A fusion of yoga, dance, tai chi & qi gong. Included is mediation & journaling. A little bit of this and a little bit of that. I’ve been teaching everything since 1977….It’s time to play and take it on the road. My word of year is ADVENTURE… An adventure in putting it together and adventure in travel!!! Anyway…
    1) The impact this will have for me is a true sense of accomplishment. This project has been in my head for a year! I will feel powerful & proud. Yeah. The impact of those involved with this creation will be uplifting, fresh and joyful.
    2) How will it benefit others? For all concerned it will bring joy & happiness. For those attending the workshop, my main intention is to raise them up…their chi, their spirit, their vision. To add joy and lightness and kindness. To have FUN…if it’s not fun, I’m not interested!!!! To touch a soul so that soul can pass it on.
    3) Who will you have to become to make this come to life? Whew…this is the kicker.
I will have to become more organized. Create more structure. And walk my talk.
I’m very much a “wing it” kind of girl. I’ve been successful thus far, however to take this on I need to be and would like to be much more organized. It’s time to become the women I’ve always wanted to be. That’s a good thing, and this is the year to do it!!! I’m feeling empowered just typing this. Thank you Marie for getting me to write. I love to write. It’s time to do a lot more of it. Off I go. Godspeed.
Peace, Love and Rock & Roll. By the way Marie, in case you read this, I’m a Jersey girl. Raised exit 11… worked down the shore for many years…seaside heights/toms river.
Now live in Florida. Big hug, God Bless~ Grace~

  107. You nailed it! This was exactly what I needed to hear when thinking forward. I am not big on New Years resolutions but I am big on putting all the big ideas out there and trying to accomplish to many at once putting strain on my health and the ones I love.

Thank you for bringing clarity and focus in my personal life but as well in my professional.

  108. Thank you so much for this video Marie. Just 5 days into 2017, I’m already feeling a little burnout. I’m so ambitious and tried to go so many things at the same time. I’ve never written a comment for an article in my life. But here’s my answer to your questions:
    1. My number #1 goal this year is to finish and publish my book on long-distance relationship. I’ve dreamed of publishing a book of my own ever since I could remember. Finally, I feel all the stars are aligned; I have all the support I need to make this come true, even a publishing contract. I only need more focus and self-compassion to bring this beautiful book out to the world.
    2. What I pruned out after your process is to begin my personal coaching practice too early. Instead of packing it in the 1st quarter, I decided to postpone it to the 2nd quarter. >> Making more space in this first 3 months of the year to focus on my group coaching program.

  109. Hello my dear Marie,
I saw your video and it is an interesting point of view.
My point of view is that people don’t focus enough on the non-materials reallity:
    – the moral of leadership and employees;
    – understanding the tasks;
    – level of stres;
    – level acceptance of risks;
    – win-win orientation;
    – trust capabilities;
    – past-future orientation;
    – change accommodations;
    – interdependence accommodation;
    – transparency and feedback.
If you don’t write down these non-materials reallity and think about their solutions then it is a great possibility that you will have a very though time focusing on the wrong paths.

    Greetings from Romania.

    Yours truly,
    Edward Alexander.

  110. This was such a great episode! And I love how much fun everyone seems to have in bringing this content out to us.
This year I want to be able to be a full time raw food chef. And for that to happen I need to become an entrepreneur, which is the part that scares me the most as it entails sooooo many different jobs at the same time! I really want to bring my gift into people’s lives as I seem to easily influence others and teach them how to eat healthier, and so many need that right now. However, the thought of being on my own terrifies me! What to do next? How to do it on a budget? How to market myself? How to create awesome content (videos, marketing materials…) on my own without the knowledge? Is it worth investing on this or that program to learn more? When to leave the job with secure income? Aaaaa (pulling hair! Haha). I definitely admire business people and their courage! And that’s who I’m going to become this year!

  111. Betsy

I think it would be wonderful if you came up with a yearly planner to write in! I bet it would be perfect for goals and ideas etc!

  112. I am currently completing my self help book with my editor and am excited to be launching it with Balboa Press.
It will inspire my students, clients and I will know that I have left a legacy to help others too.
I am passionate about sharing what I have learnt over the last 36 year of private therapy/training practice. This book will mean that more will be empowered to help themselves.
I need to be more proficient in promoting this book and building my platform which will be a very difference role from helping clients who come to my clinic.

  113. My comment is written in the box above I’m not sure why two boxes opened. Sorry if I have made a mistake here, thanks Mary Llewellyn

  114. Dear Marie Thank you for your wonderful video I loved listening to it.

Loved the purge and prune advice, Marie!
I recently launched one of my goals in terms of setting up a Teachers Pay Teachers store! One of my strongest passions is being creative in the work that I do as a Speech-Language Pathologist. The payoff for others is humbly helping learners to use my ideas grow and bloom in their education. Both the teacher and learners are able to make progress toward their goals! I am so thankful to have found my passion!

  116. 100% what I needed to hear today. Got to make a decision to take on a new job but I’m really not ready for its level of commitment this year with my family and study commitments so I’m absolutely going to take your advice on tightening things up and taking your “less is more”. I took on too much last year and I don’t want to make that same mistake this year.

  117. Happy New Year everyone!
Love the video and helpful tips! Purge and Prune! Now my goal setting is much more focused and not overwhelming or vague.
Now I going to put it in my calendar.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Yay, we’re so glad you enjoyed this episode, Stacy! Happy New Year to you too 🙂

  118. This year is devoted to finishing my self-care themed cookbook.

One of the biggest payoffs for me will be the satisfaction of completing something that I’ve poured so much of my heart and soul into.

I hope both the cookbook (and the online community) will be a source of inspiration, support, and encouragement for those who struggle with getting their own needs met.

In order to fulfill this dream, I must overcome my own fears and insecurities, and dare to “show up” fully–believing what I have to offer is good enough. I also need to be conscious about where I focus my energy, and let go of any unrealistic goals. In other words, I need to do LESS to accomplish MORE.

That being said, I’m putting my online digestive health course on the back burner until my book is finished. THEN I’ll focus on bringing that dream to life. Now I have a “Join Waitlist” button, and a whole lot more peace of mind.

Thanks SO much for this liberating confirmation, Marie!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

LOVE it, Sharon! We’re cheering you on for finishing your cookbook this year – you SO got this ♥

      • Thank you, Caroline! 🙂

  119. Iben Louise

    Hi Marie and team,

Wow, did you hit the nail on the head there? I am one of those multi passionate time optimists who always come up with new ideas and pretty much never follow through on any of them.

But this year is going to be different. Because I’m on a mission.

You see I am the wife of a veteran. And I am also an amateur stand up comedian. So my big goal this year is to write a comedy show about all of the taboos and misconceptions surrounding veterans and their families (no, we don’t sit at home all night, crying our eyes out, waiting for him to call for the duration of his deployment). I am going to perform the show at the national comedy festival here in Denmark in September.

My personal gain is that I’ll actually prove to my self that I can do this.

The gain of others is hopefully to get the talk going about how it REALLY is to be the spouse of a veteran and make other people comfortable with the situation (and not asking ‘but isn’t it HARD?’ all the time).

And the person I’ll have to become is someone who knows how to put together and perform a full hour comedy show.

I am working with a professional actor and a professional instructur to make this project come true and I am so excited to get started on the process.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world.

    Iben Louise

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Wonderful, Iben Louise! We’re so glad this episode really resonated, and we’re cheering you on for your goals this year!

    • Hi Iben
I’d be interested in adding some humor to my course for Veterans… let me know when you have your comedy show ready, I’ll put a link on our blog, or even do a story on you!

  120. Robin Pringle

Marie, I have two major goals I want to focus on this year. One is to have multiple sources of income. The second is to move to another state, Virginia Beach, VA. The past ten years, I have been taking care of an ailing parent. I have been living with other family members, and I lost my job five years ago. I also lost most of my possessions in storage and had to have surgery two years ago. I am doing well physically, but emotionally, I am drained. I take care of everyone else and this year I need to take care of me. I want to live in a better environment and I want to have at home businesses that I can share with others and help them to have their own source of income.

  121. Hi Marie!
I’m going to focus on making my product the beautiful amazing product it’s meant to be. I’ll have to have integrity, courage, follow-through to make my vision come to life, and that’s the payoff – becoming that person! Also so I can legitimately call myself an entrepreneur and own it. For other people I’ll be someone they can trust.

  122. Aysenur Akgöz

    Hello Marie,
I would like to work with the film producer Joe Roth. I would like to meet him. I would like to act in his fairy tale films. I have talent for acting. I am so excited to meet Joe Roth!

  123. Mariah

    Loved this!
My main goal is to finish my medical billing certification. My second goal is to find a medical billing job.

My bottom two goals that will get pruned are to find a new academic project or goal and buy a new car. Sure they are both nice thoughts but they aren’t necessities for me right now.

  124. Jo

    Happy New Year!
I love New Year, I love the start of something new for the same reasons I love Mondays and mornings – you can start over and all fresh. Interestingly most of my biggest goals I have ever achieved I have never written down but I generally did only have one or two for the year (or a 5 year plan with 1 main focus) and it lived in my head all the time. However it has been a few years since I have had that kind of clarity so am going for the written perspective this year. Thanks Marie, I think your purge and prune will be something for me to do regularly in order to stay focused this year.
My main goal for this year is to restore balance to my life. Last year was a crazy work year that definitely saw me do the ‘ugly cry’ to my manager no less… Although at the time I felt very humiliated by losing control it has led to the best purge . This year I have few work goals as my focus (I still have some) and am really going to focus on my health and fitness so that I resemble the person I know myself as. Somehow she has gotten a bit lost over the last few years. I know the payoff will be that I will feel good about myself, feel energised and achieve heaps more this way. I will also show my 8 year old what it is like to live a better lifestyle and lead by example. All he has seen in recent years is his precious time being imposed on by work. Ultimately this year is about letting go of my ‘ego’ (something Wayne Dwyer said that has struck a chord with me) and knowing that I am not indispensable so I can take time off, I can leave work after I finish an eight hour day, I can turn off my phone and I can say No. Now that I have just written that, I realise I really need to make that one of my goals – to say No. To do this I need to let go off the work/professional goals for a while which is going to be challenging.
Hope everyone else has a super duper 2017.

  125. Nicole

I’m going to switch professions in this year, to an industry that I’m more interested in. The payoff is: I can find the place where I can put my expertise to full use.
I try to discuss this issue with many friends from different field, and they give me some useful suggestion, this idea let me to. The important task that I have to reform my resume, un-related experience should be deleted. Finally, thanks for Marie’s video, you always give me inspiration to think about the future, make me growing up.

  126. Mugi

    Dear Marie,

Happy New Year! Thank you for great inspiration. I’ve got my homework :). Also, I will share your site with my friends.

  127. My Arthropoda Tarot deck 🙂 It will bring a different style of artwork to Tarot readers, something out of the ordinary to inspire them. I plan to have it finished by the end of February. To do it I’ll have to be more singularly focused than my multi-passionate mind usually is. I pruned the book and oracle deck for my symbols for this. I’m choosing to follow the fun this year, so it feels great 🙂

  128. Amy

Last year I purchased a goalsetting workbook that was more than 100 pages long. It took me forever to get through it and then I hardly looked at again. This is so much easier and more effective!

My number one goal is to write a book this year. It will help me with healing some things in the past. It will also help me to figure out how to speak up for myself so that the same situations do not keep happening. I hope it will be an inspiration for other people and bring income for me. It might even spark people’s interest in my jewelry website. I’m so excited to focus on this now instead of spreading myself too thin.

  129. I know, I am a week late watching this January 2017 episode, but I am a day early before another pops out possibly tomorrow!
So glad I took the time to Listen – its my big word for the New Year.
    To get to your points:
    1. I am going to gain more exposure for my jewelry designs & make a go for getting my Marinella jewelry into stores, shoppes, boutiques
    2. I will get to share my designs with more people, hopefully make more money but also communicate what my designs represent for me & my want to inspire others wearing my jewelry with my jewelry’s significance
    3. I am giving up my sole social media focus on growing insta & fb… That single-mindedness has taken up far too much of my brain power… plus by expanding the reach of my jewelry maybe that in turn will grow my social media following
Wow, I actually thought about this, wrote it down & now am shouting it out to YOU, Marie… Its so for real now!
Thanks for that shove off the cliff, I needed it!

  130. Daketa

My biggest goal this year is to complete my degree in business administration. This will allow me to move forward in my educational career and get one step closer to becoming an attorney. This will also allow me to earn a higher income in my current position which will benefit my family. In order to accomplish this I will need to stay focused, study hard and dump social media as soon as class starts. In order to accomplish this goal I will have to nix my goal of starting an internet reality show until next year, maybe?

  131. Marie, this is an episode that makes me feel you’re telepathic ?

Since the end of November, I’ve been thinking about my 2017 goals. One thing I’ve noticed over the past 5 years since I started setting yearly goals is that most of the time I keep changing my goals throughout the year because they’re so overwhelming, and I didn’t want to continue down the same road in 2017. Instead, I decided to set more “reasonable” goals and since starting to set them in early December, I’ve weeded and purged them over 3 times. I’m finally at a place where I feel my goals are just the right amount of challenging that falls shy of being overwhelming.

My biggest goal for the year is to host a virtual summit on/related to translation. My business is a translation + digital marketing agency specializing in Arabic and the MENA region, and one of the things I want to do is increase my visibility as well as continue to educate entrepreneurs and authors about the importance of translation and marketing to international audiences. I plan to hold it in September, but I’m already starting to plan some of the topics and speakers from now! I have a goal of selling 125 passes to the summit.

In order to work on this goal, I had to purge my goals of creating a series of online courses on digital marketing. I’ve pushed them off 2017’s list and moved them onto the 2018 and beyond list.

Thank you so much for this video, you helped validate that I’m not the only person who has gone through this process! ?

  132. Virginia Reeves

Marie’s ‘words of wisdom’ strike again! Purge and Prune is an easy and fun concept to remember. My BIG project this year is to work with writers, coaches, and others to join me in getting self-help and business books into prison libraries. The payoff for me is meeting great people and seeing more of my books get out in the world. Benefits to others is exposure, goodwill, and knowing that some people will appreciate the material (who might not have access to it otherwise). Who I will have to become – a networker, a believer in my abilities to figure this out (get sponsors), and someone who follows a dream to make it happen. Anyone interested in joining me – it’s open to anyone.

  133. Great NY vid.

Major goal for 2017 is to market and publish first book plus create Audiobook.

Re: filters – #1 The payoff is finally getting my writing ‘out there’ and building my audience. #2 Sharing my best poems from the last 20 years … words, ideas and experiences with others. #3 I’ll have to hone my daily habits to make this a reality.

A goal I let go of? A relationship goal to meet a significant other.

At the end of the day, I believe that will happen by virtue of following my path and honing my skills.

  134. Making it into a song is so brilliant! It’s fun and easy to remember. Gives self development a youthful boost. Thank you so much!

  135. Georgia Mae

I know that I late posting my comment, sorry. It’ s been a busy few days for me. Thanks for doing the Purge and Prune episode. I need it!
My Big Goal this year is to purchasing a Home by August!
The payoff will be that I will no longer be in the renting and helping some else pay their mortgage. I have been renting for 8 years and tired of renting. I will have a tax write-off that I need. I will be more motivated to do the tasks necessary to accomplish my Big Goal! And, this will motivate and assist me with my other goals for this year.
I truly enjoy your episodes, they are very motivating and thought provoking.
Have a Blessed Evening, Marie 🙂

  136. Monika

Do my best because my english is so la la.? My goal is to focus more on my own like to do more meditating, yoga and so on. But there is another big goal, I really like to share my experience and do Workshops byond the philosophy from L. Hay, what I already did in SC USA. Back In Germany I struggle to get some people who are interested. But I like your ideas and will work with them. I am open and willing to get more skills. 2017 will be a great year. Lots of love. Monika.

    • Monika

Forgot to say, I will be much more concsious what I think, say and how I act. This will affect my environment too. I made already my experience.

  137. Hi Mama Marie & MF Team & Community of Readers!!!

This year’s project is to get my home-based business up and OUT there!
Included in my business, I will run classes on making your own Kefir, Sauerkraut, Kimchi and Raw Chocolate at home! #FeedYourSelf #Probiotics
ALSO, I will have classes on Natural Birth Control & Family Planning with TheBillingsMethod.
PLUS, Sister Goddess Workshops to create a much-needed community for women to support one another in goals, ambitions and accountability.
Not to forget my most favourite Meditation Classes!

I’ve pruned my focus on being an actress, it has had fun successes along the way but overall requires more time & energy than it pays.

    Feels good!!! #2017

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Great goals, Qelsey! Cheers to an amazing 2017 ahead 🙂

  138. Candra

I just have to say that the funny thing is, in the beginning, I thought the guys were in a tavern saying they only serve Perch and prunes. Haha!! I then thought the one guy was doubled over from too many prunes. But, I got it, I got it. and now I’m purging and pruning. Let someone else have the perch.

  139. In August, 2016 my family lost our home and about 95% of our personal belongings due to a house fire. I want to give people something that I couldn’t find: what essential steps to take before, during and in the aftermath of this type of life-changing event. My primary focus is publishing a book…but, I’m open to putting together a webinar series, finalizing the worksheets that I created to help me navigate things, and maybe a small e-course for a more in-depth look at what you can do when faced with your own personal Apocalypse.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

I’m so sorry to hear you and your family lost your home and belongings in a fire! That sounds really traumatic. I’m so glad you’re using your knowledge to help others going through similar situations—I know everyone who benefits from your wisdom will be so thankful.

  140. Acie

    I needed to hear this.
My brain has been feeling like exploding lately – because of all the awesome I am trying to create! (deep breaths….)

Marie – thank you for continuing to put out such stellar content.
I appreciate you and your awesomeness.

  141. Jhanvi

    Thanks, Marie,

I love your statement, So do I need to schedule to make it real 🙂

  142. So I’ve done some purging and pruning while planning my next steps this year. The thing that surprised me was that, actually, my goals are very SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time Based). I hope it’s a huge roadsign saying: “That way” 🙂 Thank you, Marie, just for being you 🙂 All the best, B.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s awesome, Barbara! SMART is smart! Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom.

  143. I set it up one Goal for this year.
To learn a new Web app development language and make $100,000 from it.
    I’m gonna do it.

  144. The goal that I have put top priority for 2017 is growing my social influence (especially on IG and Twitter) to 100k on each account while maintaining the quality of my content.

The payoff is having greater influence and $ from affiliate offers, it will impact others because more people will be able to get my positive message and tips for marketing and life hacks and the person I will need to become is one that is much more self-promoting so that means doing interviews and guest blogging, etc.

One project or goal that I have pruned as a result of this process is pleasing people. I listened to a podcast on codependency and finally really understood what it was. I did the exercise of looking at my calendar and seeing what I had put on there that I “had to do” for some weird reason, that I didn’t really want to do and just cut it ALL OUT! I feel sooooo much lighter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Marie for being so super fabulous. You are an inspiration and one of the things that did make my calendar that I do not have to do is being on Marie TV and I’m here because I want to be. lol 😀 Keep up the good work.

    2. What’s one project or goal that you’ve pruned as a result of this process? How does it feel to let it go?

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Right on, Jessica! I’m so glad you’re pruning people pleasing. Your opinion of yourself is the only one that matters. <3

  145. Thanks Marie,
The prune advice is perfect for me. I tend to have dozens of ideas that end up occupying a huge amount of my time. Pruning out the poorer performing goals and focusing on the stuff that generates decent returns is great advice.

  146. Alyssa

Loved this one, Marie! Thank you so much.

As a singer, I have a goal to put together a recital and perform it this year. This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a couple years, but I am already starting to get ideas of what I want to perform put together so I can get the ball rolling.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s really cool, Alyssa! Congrats on your future recital—we’ll be cheering you on!

  147. THANK YOU! I am soooo one of those people who takes on too much! In 2016, I made a commitment to create monthly online trainings as part of the Nonprofit U, the online learning center located on our website. Even though I already had a lot of usable content on my hard drive, the production paces was b-r-u-t-a-l, because I’ve also been writing my 1st book… Sleep? Who needs sleep??? (You wanna talk Ugly Cry? 😉

This year, the one BIG thing I want to do is launch the Philanthropy Playground, my new adventure to bring those who want to change the world together with organizations and people who are. I have no idea how this is going to make me any money, but I’m feeling a strong pull to build it and trust that it will eventually support me.

There are a bunch of things I’ve had to say “no” to in order to move this to the front burner — including several new clients! I trust, however, that focusing my energy on the Playground will bring my biz to the next level and that my existing client work will generate enough revenue. As a single Mom with a son in college, shifting my focus like this requires a HUGE leap of faith, but it will also help me fulfill my mission, which is to help strengthen the nonprofit sector so they can support the people who turn to them for help. And if I can do that on a larger scale, then the angst will be more than worth it! 🙂

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

It sounds like you’re doing amazing work in the world, Sarah! We’re looking forward to seeing where you dreams take you. 🙂

  148. Hebah

Stumbling on Marie Forleo, feels like a blessing and in time, as again and again, I’m getting overwhelmed with many dreams and responsibilities. I have to say on he verge of turning 40 and not following my dreams yet, finally I took the decision accompanied by actions towards my dreams.

Have to say, I’m on and off a healthy routine to work hard to accomplish these dreams and following my set goals. A little better (sometimes) in trying to live for myself and my dreams which was really hard for me (and still) as I’m always energetic and their for others (at times defiantly as a way out from my fear to follow my dreams).

But that is something in the past, but the on and off routine is still there. I’m a multi dreamer person for sure. I resigned from a steady job and decided to become a freelancer Marketing & Branding Strategist with over 17 years of experience. Cause i was never successful in following my dream along with being an employee (around 3 times along my life). My ultimate childhood dream is having my own Jewellery Brand (which is set, but still unlaunched – with the first 2 collections designed) This week started on producing the first piece, still waiting to see it. Due to the expensive raw material, and the economy is falling during the past year the Branding industry is not that good, I’ve been working on and off in the furniture design and decoration industry through family and fiends, so I decided to make a brand out of it to generate a cashflow for my jewellery.

Create a portfolio of projects to launch my furniture studio, having issues and working around them, but there are delays and the doubt i have to admit of working on several things is not the right way to go. That is why I decided to focus on the jewellery more and take it easy on the still unfinished furniture projects.

That without mention the personal responsibility of family and friends. Not the normal responsibilities only, but like daily babysitting my 1 year old niece as my sister is back to work (since 6 months ago), my mum moving from her apartment and working on another. Starting a relationship that is not smooth…… Hate to be less than 100% focused with anybody and with my new mindset, hate doing it to myself and dreams. Its for me very critical for me as i have no other source of income and my savings are dried up.

With all that I’m still believe I can make it, as well as that i’m scared, but i made the decision and i want to give it my all to be able to live the dream of doing what i love (creating, designing, a brand that can give back to my community, family and live financially comfortable and as i am now independently)

I feel i talked a lot, but i wanted you to now from where i’m coming and to help me is it correct to prune out the furniture brand (for at least few months)? am I overwhelming myself with too many launches?

  149. This is so awesome Marie!!! Thank you so much for all your amazing and hard work!
My big goal this year is to help a 1,000 families succeed financially through my eCourse. In order to make this happen, I need to become a certified financial coach so I can better guide them and serve them well. I need to increase my email subscribers to add more people into my sales funnel and I need to increase my social media presence to gain more exposure.

  150. Vearle Avni

Haha what a fun video, you guys must’ve really enjoyed making it.
Well I very sadly, didn’t win a scholarship though I must admit… I didn’t see my entry:( Maybe because I’m meant to purge & prune and complete both my MSc thesis and my DBA thesis and get the CPHQ exam written with a pass which is 93% … I was prepared to put this all aside for B School… so I now need to refocus, realign with commitments, become really disciplined and determined so that I can get a better paying job so that I can pay for B School next year so that I can be free to get out of this country where I work, because if you have any loans, and it’s time to go home for whatever reason, age or job loss… you don’t get out… you go in! And that’s not my aim. I have the babies of the new world to serve… along with their mamas. So keep an eye out for me next year Marie + B School team. I will remain inspired with all your wonderful sharing and fun videos! From my heart to yours, lots of love Vearle

  151. Josiane

Thank you for this wonderful tool. So simple yet I don’t know anyone so great with organization as Marie’s. Yes Marie Forleo ( for sure as I am a current B-Schooler and am in need of a Marie fix now and then hihihi! it helps me to keep on track positively) and another Marie is helping on my major project of this season Marie Kondo…
    1. Keeping only things I love to create a space to live in, that I love! I am implementing this technique and its working like a charm. Moving into a new smaller space will also help to surround myself with lovely energy. I need to stay focused to get the goal done and to enjoy the atmosphere I want and dream to have.
Creating my business is also a major MAJOR project for this year. I need to dig out my internal leader in me to collect the financial benefits of my accomplishment.
    2. Pruning. Having a second child this year. Focusing on my business is the most important plan for the next 12 months. (An enjoying my amazing 18 months old)
This is a great exercise. Thank you so very much!

  152. Hey Marie!
It’s so nice to learn from you.
The project I want to launch this year is the “Marketing with Purpose Workshop”.
Marketing with Purpose is the method I’d developed and I really want to teach them to more people, so I want to make this presencial training.

    love, Paula

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s wonderful, Paula! We’re big fans of marketing from the heart, so it’s fantastic that you’re helping people do that too. We’ll be sending positive energy your way for a super successful launch! 🙂

  153. Justine

This year my biggest project is building my brand.
Filter 1: The payoff is that it is the beginning of the rest of my life. I hope to live through being an inspiring creative as an illustrator, writer, director-long term goal, but that’s where I see myself. Launching myself off the ramp and start flying through my talents.
Filter 2: I’m hoping to inspire others a little bit every day to live with love and kindheartedness and pretty much share and hopefully teach how I’ve overcome the years of suffering worthlessness (anxiety and depression).
Filter 3: I will have to develop courage and confidence to get myself out into the world. Maintain healthy morning routines, early starts, appropriate podcasts or other audio to fill my mind, eating raw and vegetarian again (the healthiest and happiest I’ve been in my past) etc. Continue my creative daily habits to keep creating and inspiring.
I took off the things that I know will come during this process, for example, healthier lifestyle, networking, planning an exhibition, finance, attaining the love of my life. All these I feel will come when I’m focused on building myself as my own brand. I will be true to myself everyday, therefore naturally eating healthier and attracting opportunities to exhibit my work, gaining finance and being the truest version of myself will attract him back to me (A Notebook type story (with less heartache), taking time to work on ourselves to be ready to commit fully to each other)
Thank you Marie for showing up and being you and helping me and thousands of others to find and live their calling. xxx Much love

  154. 1. Increase abundance in my finances.
#1 I’ll be able to become debt-free and increase my financial freedom
#2 My family and friends will no longer worry about me, or the money they lent to me, or that I won’t be able to get what they feel I deserve
#3 I will have to become the person my friends and family see: a person who deserves much more!

    2. Buy a loft. I feel more secure now that I’ve taken this off the list (for now). I was feeling restrained by this goal because I set it from a place of fear – I’m going to move in with my boyfriend soon and felt like I should have something for myself too, in case we would go wrong, I felt like without this loft, I wouldn’t have a proper space to do my coaching and trainings, etc. etc. Just fear.

  155. Great Video, I totally agree you need and keep revising and updating because with time it might seem that what you thought was important at some point its not anymore. the more time passes and the more you grow you can develop the intelligence to know what is necessary or just what you thought is necessary to reach your purpose.

  156. Great advice. It’s so good to get all these ideas running through my head and on to paper. I purged 20 goals, which I know I will not achieve by the end of the year so to stop the overwhelming and quit habits I normally do, I have focused on 3 goals.
    1. To exercise (bushwalking, swimming or cycling) for an hour a day without pain or injury and to build up my fitness and endurance.
    2. To create my own online wellness business and bring in regular income which is also family friendly and flexible hours.
    3. Reduce my anxiety and get out of my comfort zone. Travel, go out at night, social more. Use meditation and mindfulness to help.

  157. Magda

Thank you and Happy New Year!!

  158. Aaj

Marie you’re the coolest thing ever!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this video.

  159. Karina Hollender

My biggest goal is to create the fastest growing team in Network marketing with the lowest dropout rate seen in the company I work with.
Cuz I want to help as many people as I possible can while helping others reach their own goals and dreams.
I need to become a great team leader who leads with her heart, knows her worth, and a great listener. Someone who is an awesome storyteller and can teach others the tricks of the trade, who can lift people up to reach their dreams.

  160. Awesome video, Marie! I literally just did this last night – mind buzzing with ideas for the year. When I woke up though I started feeling stressed out at the number of projects on my list, so Purge & Prune come at the right time today ;).

  161. #1 Project on my goal list this year is to make my Flagship online course “Shaping Purpose” come to life and reach thousands of people around the globe, and create a sustainable business by the end of the year, and an outrageously successful business in 5 years.
What is the payoff? For me, it will provide an outlet for giving back and helping make the world a better place. It will employ a team of people and provide a course that will help improve the lives of those in difficult transitions.

Who will I have to become? I will have to become a leader, an excellent delegator and a self-disciplined visionary with excellent boundaries.

#2 What have I pruned? Well, transitions are common so instead of creating “Shaping Purpose” for several different niches, I’m pruning it down to **one niche** this year.
We still need to pick the niche with the most impact…

What do you think would be a great focus for 2019?
    * Military to Civilian transition
    * Job to Retirement transition
    * Youth to Adult transition
    * Athlete to New Life
The course has been researched and tested in a live classroom setting, and covers strategies to figure out who you are; what your gifts, passions, and values are; and to plot your new Life Plan.

What does it do for you? It moves you from “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.” to “I know who I am, and what my purpose is, and I have a plan for my life .”

Thank you, Marie, for always being there, and providing that example for the rest of us!

  162. Ah… Marie. You are an amazing person. When I first discovered you, I was overwhelmed by your emails and actually thought you were too much. ? But found myself, saying I need more Marie?.
Enough about you, now me. ☺️ I want to impact literacy. To do that… I need to make sure my son is a proficient reader first. I homeschool him. He is 7. So he comes before biz. I homeschool because I don’t want him to be where I was 25 years ago. Lost. With no experience. And in the world of work with below average basic skills. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t think clearly. Couldn’t read proficiently in neither English, my mother tongue ? or Spanish my mother’s tongue ?. Seriously. I wasn’t proficient in any language. Zipo. This made me weak in more ways than one. I couldn’t get out of a rut. I couldn’t think my way out of one let alone communicate out of one. It held me back far too long until I reached the end of my rope. I went to college. Decided on a major. Wrong major. But decided. I finished and earned my degree. Was still NOT reading with proficiency mind you. I went to college to improve READING and didn’t have the skill to read. So I decided. I will try law school. ?
I really just wanted to be in biz to communicate and be persuasive and influence for the good of man kind. ?

I like thinking ? I like wrapping my mind around facts and legal issues and trying to solve problems.

But being a lawyer is so much more than what law school teaches and I am glad I didn’t get accepted because *gasp my LSAT was not up to par – I had a big gap in my education. “K-12” failed me. My parents failed me. I couldn’t read well. In any language. This made all subjects weak.

However, wanting to go to law school made me sit down one year and study the LSAT. This test made me proficient so much so I enrolled and did my paralegal certification at the community college. Ya know what? It was the first time in history I was actually reading to learn and learning to learn.

Not being able to read well meant I couldn’t write well and do basic math well and … interact well and… communicate well!

And what to know a startling truth?

36% of our nations 4th graders are proficient at reading. And by 8th grade only 32% are proficient at reading.

    Ya know what that means?
I am NOT alone. I am in the 68% of people who graduated not proficient. I was average to below average with over half the population in America!

    So my son comes first.
Then I want to impact my husband. He is stubborn, arrogant and the older he gets the more set in his ways he becomes. He is smart and successful at his work. But our marriage needs a lift. I need to stay married and improve it for my child’s sake. My parents were divorced and from experience, it didn’t help my education that my mom had to work long and hard to make ends meet for my brothers and I. I don’t believe a single parent is more effective than a family: husband and wife working together to make a family. Second goal: I need to work smarter with my husband.

Third goal: I want to impact literacy in others lives. I want to serve and make a difference through my work- I sell the best children’s books in the world and I believe every child can succeed with the right tools and support from home and school.

And I want to see more children reading proficiently by 8th grade. I want 68% of our nations kidyreading proficiently bc if we can’t read you can’t accomplish didly.

Doing these things will allow me to
    -recruit more team members
    -have more money
    -travel more
    -have more time for family
    -renovate my home ?

How do I stick to this year, Marie?

    Your faithful student,
Marla ? Christmas isn’t over yet.

  163. My biggest goal that I’m committed to this year is to build my businesses up to making a decent profit (books, coaching and CBD sales). By the year’s end I want to have a multilayered income stream that will help rid me of my huge debt.

Also the biggest purge is in being totally debt free by the end of the year. I may still get it accomplished if everything goes right, but at least I won’t be stressed in getting it done.

  164. Anyone else have trouble getting ahold of the download? Help!

    • Hailey - Team Forleo

Hi Joy! We’d love to help you download the worksheet. Please write to us at [email protected] and we’ll make sure you have everything you need!

  165. Thank you for this, Marie! The PDF download is not working for me. It allows me to enter my details in the form but when I click download it opens a white page with a single 0 on it.

    • Hailey - Team Forleo

Hi Nicoletta! We’re sorry to hear you were having some trouble downloading the PDF. If you’ll write to us at [email protected], we’ll be happy to help!

  166. My BIG Goal is launching my fitness app in January! By automating this process, I can reach more people.
I’ve pruned my toxic relationship. I will NOT engage with him, even though he owes me money. I’m done with the bullshittedness.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

GO Erica! We’re cheering you on and wishing you so much success, happiness, and abundance in the year ahead. You deserve it.

  167. Rashad

Xo. Dear Marie i love your style.

  168. Camelia Cracan

Dear Marie and Dream Team Forleo!
I would like to say THANK YOU for all your fantastically inspiring and supportive presence this past 2018! You’ve been one of my super wise friends , present in my car (thank you bluetooth!) , almost daily, for my longer commutes 🙂
Happy and grateful to be part of this awesome energy ball you are creating!

    Happy New Year!
Abundant purging and artful pruning to all, for 2019!

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Aww, thank you SO much for this sweet message Camelia – it means the world to know you’ve felt supported by our content over the past year. 2019 holds many amazing things for you, we know it! So grateful to have you in our community.

  169. 1. What’s the number one goal or project you’re committed to bringing to life this year?
Ghosted is a musical that my friend and I wrote.

Describe it in terms of the 3 filters: What’s the payoff, how will it impact others and who will you need to become in order to bring it to life?
    The payoff: hooray we get to do a show;
Impact: all the people who work with us on the show will get to do what they love – even if but for a brief moment in a community theatre (Canadian) kind of a way.
Who will you need to be: Director – shit I haven’t done this since high school but I gotta clear vision methinks. So I’m gonna do it. I really think I got this. Even if there are tons of others with way more experience than me.

    2. What’s one project or goal that you’ve pruned as a result of this process? How does it feel to let it go?
Witch – my fictional book/play about a woman dead set on creating a matriarchal society will just have to wait. I really hope to get back to this though after the other one. I spent this whole year 2018 – researching and writing and trying to finish this damn thing – and I am not even that close.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Alexandra – your ideas are all so exciting and I can tell that you’re already well on your way! You’ve SO got this. Keep trusting that divine timing and what seems to be calling to you most right now. We’re excited for you to bring Ghosted to life this year – keep us posted! And keep sharing your beautiful creative vision with the world, it’s so needed.

  170. Thankyou Marie Forleo for sharing so generously your wonderful uplifting advice and videos. I wish you and your family (personal and business) all the very best of heath , happiness, Joy and continued success in 2019.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Thank YOU, Linda! We love having you in our community and truly appreciate your warm wishes.

  171. Dinise Mustain

    1. My number one goal is to accept my move to town from 40 years living in the country AND still stay creative. My art is based on gardening, walking in the woods daily, pressing plants….moving to town will change this. The payoff is I get to see a different side of nature. The impact to others will be a new look at nature and creating a body of art that speaks to new audience.. I will need to change from dinise of the woods to dinise of the earth…woods, streets, gardens, towns….

    2. What’s one project or goal that you’ve pruned as a result of this process? How does it feel to let it go? I let go of my identity of a “woods woman artist” and just accept I don’t need a country home to create. It feel like a load as been lifted. I am free to create.
    Thank you for your website.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Love this, Dinise! We’re wishing you all the best in this exciting new chapter of your life and artistic expression!

  172. Brenda Treppiedi

I have a dream to write a novel about my life. It has been an interesting journey for me. I have experienced so many life-altering challenges and overcome them. Your advice has been so helpful to put that behind and start the healing process. My novel will be about those experiences and at the same time a form of therapy. This will definitely help women in the same situations. I would like to continue with creating some self-esteem courses to help women overcome their situations after the novel is written. This not only will be good for my well being, my family, and women in general. I have pruned the craft business idea as this will be not as fulfilling or financially rewarding to me at this time. I will still work on it but it will not be my main focus as my writing will be. Thank you for all you positive energy.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

How beautiful and powerful, Brenda. We’re sending lots of positive wishes for all your pursuits this year!

  173. M/MF Insiders:
Big goal = break 6 figures+ having turned my ship (new focus) to Connectivity (connecting people on purpose, with the intent to serve others – human to human, not ‘technology [those are tools, not connectivity])
Impact = serving & teaching with the message of Connectivity to those who want to learn how to connect, what it can mean and how to share it forward for positive growth.
Me: focused & disciplined to my IGST (Intention/Goal/Strategy/Tactic) – one of the frameworks I’ve developed to guide my focus – also in my book.
Thanks & Fruitful 2019 vibes to you all ~

  174. Lynne Troiano

    This year-eat healthy/gain strength/lose fat
Payoff- That’s an easy one. I’ll be healthier with less fat.
Impact on others- No more abundance of snacks or empty calories in my home.
Who I need to become- a bit selfish. Saying no to anything or anyone who deters me from my workouts or my commitment to eating healthy

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Love your clarity, Lynne! Keep those healthy boundaries strong. You can SO do this – we’re cheering you on over here as you create radiant health for yourself!

  175. Sarah Heiner

    1. What’s the number one goal or project you’re committed to bringing to life this year?
I am going to start a business that I’ve been considering. If it is successful, it will give my family more financial flexibility and will help me achieve my social giving goals in my community. I will need to stop living small and will need to become committed to my schedule to make it work.

I am wanting to join or start a mastermind group with 4-5 other women ready to start their own business so that we can support each other. Please let me know if you are looking for the same thing. 🙂

    2. What’s one project or goal that you’ve pruned as a result of this process? How does it feel to let it go?
I think I’m going to have to give up learning Japanese just for this moment in time. It is taking too much of my concentration and brain power. I’m not giving it up, just postponing it. It makes me sad to give it up, but also it feels necessary.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

So exciting Sarah – sounds like a fantastic plan for making progress towards your business goals this year! You may be interested in our B-School program. Sign up right here to learn more: We’re cheering you on for a fruitful year ahead!

  176. Dear Marie,

Happy New Year! I just wanted to take a moment as I close out the year to thank you for all the time and effort you put into helping others find their vision and reach their dreams. As I think back on my year as an entrepreneur, author, mother, and mult-passionate dreamer and doer, I can very clearly mark the times your work and your guidance has helped to keep me stay focused, motivated and moving in the direction that brings me and my loved ones fulfillment and joy.

This, video, like so many you have shared, is such a useful, tangible guidepost–and I wanted to be one of the voices in your crowd cheering you on, thanking you, and sharing my gratitude for all that you are and do.

Wishing you much joy and continued growth and leadership in the New Year. And always, love.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Thank you SO much for these kind words, Sarah. They truly mean the world and we’re so grateful to have you as an amazing part of our community. Can’t wait to share more inspiration with you in 2019!

  177. I love this video Marie. It came at the perfect time too!
I’m a little torn, Ok alot! I wanted to bring my second business ArtCardsUnited back for 2019. Now I’m not so sure that it’s a good idea for this year.
ArtCardsUnited works to give artists opportunities to share their works with the world. I do not have a team at the moment helping me though and it is a huge project for one person to take on.
I can not say in all honesty that I KNOW I am ready for that at the moment. I know that I am close though.
Also, ArtCardsUnited is my baby. I know that sounds odd but it is. It took years to create and I absolutely love it.
At the same time ArtCardsUnited even took alot of time and energy with someone helping me. I have no doubt that it’d take alot on my energy if I worked on it alone and I’m not really 100% ready to work on it alone. Thinking about it, working on ACU alone would completely drain me. Working with a team may be different but I think I need to wait until I am 100% sure that I am ready though .
AngelasArtArea or my art and first business can help me there and really I can always come back to ACU. It’s not like I’m throwing it to the dogs or anything but it’s hard to let go of…still thank you because I believe that I need to wait until I am ready.
I just watched Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in You’ve got mail. Interesting!!! Have you seen it?! If you haven’t you should!
I like the “it’s not personal, it’s business” thing. I kinda think that they could work together though but maybe I’m still to soft? Anyway, thanks again and Happy New Year!!!
    Namaste love,
    Angela Taylor

  178. Carole j Klingbeil

Thank you Marie! This past year has been one of a journey for me to stay strong. Your 2 Step Process for 2019 is wonderful.

  179. Martez

Nice Video Marie. You looked like you were IN THE ZONE on this one!!

Ok, here it go….this one may surprise you.

Although I’m a “walk and chew gum at the same time” type of person, and do a lot of different things in the background for people when I can outside of writing, creating and growing what’s already in place,I…….are you ready…….I plan to finish songs I’ve been writing.
Yes, I know, I’m not drake, but I know a (tiny) little something about how that all works. (speaking of which–that song in the video was fiiya–lol)
Whoever’s putting that stuff together for you is REALLY GOOD!!

    Ok, I digress.

As far back as I can remember, I was getting melodic poems and melodies in my head that spoke to life issues, God and divine wisdom on important matters. It’s fulfilling because. it speaks to a need that I see missing in society in general. And I feel God has been sending people to tell me to get on it already.

I think it’ll bless those who get a chance to hear it who can receive it, and it’ll be unlike anything they’ve heard before (if I ever finish it).

I believe it fits who I am already. I’ve just been doing so many other things that I didn’t take the time to groom it like I should’ve. But, I never wanted to make that the burden for survival, so I explored and learned other things to be free to do it the way I wanted to without strings.

I’ll probably have to stop exploring too many new entrepreneur opportunities ;( (temporarily) to do it effectively (which, again, could make me a little less visible online next year, but we’ll see on that one)–While at the same time, not abandon what’s already in place.

Don’t laugh!!! I think I got a 50/50 chance of pulling it off, right? OOk,
    but (Ima) try it anyway–lol

Thank You for being such an inspiration to me this year, Marie!
Wishing you and yours a happy, safe and healthy new year 🙂

  180. Thank you Marie!!! I love New Year’s and I am getting ready to do some serious meditation on what I envision for 2019. This was helpful especially the question “Who will I have to become to make this happen?” What habits, skills, or character traits do I need? This is key!!

  181. Clayton

Goal #1 = become a salesforce admin certified.
    – I will become more marketable in the IT field,
    – I am hoping it will show my work colleagues that I am done with my current project. I would like to move to another project involving Salesforce.
    – I need to become focus and not be afraid of failure. I need to relax and do the best i can in the exam. If I fail, then I will get back up and sign up for the cert exam again.
Goal #3 = find a significant other [pruned, cut]. Painful at first when when doing the filter. I should focus on what I can control the most in a goal.

  182. “Sometimes the best way to grow is to cut back.”
True words and I’m finally learning this! Less is more, yes, I agree.

  183. I opened an ecommerce store a year ago (as a side hustle) to lackluster results. I was not focused. I kept changing my focus from social media to writing blog posts to contact journalists. But it wasn’t consistent. Weeks of nothing in between. I would set goals for a week, and quickly become overwhelmed. This year, I’m going to focus (prune) on one thing. Etsy. Daily I commit to adding products to the store. That’s simple and something I can stick to.

  184. Tegan Ballinger

My Self goal for 2019 is to remember the birds, the animals, the land, the water before buying any products. To do this I will have to become an organised person who can take time to calmly ponder before making choices. Meditation and Yoga will help me with this. The payoff is using my everyday power of choice to protect the Earth.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

LOVE this, Tegan! What a beautiful intention.

  185. Raejean

My big project for the year is to add current entrepreneur resources to my local library, and hosting meet-ups for in person support, brain-storming and collaborations.
    – The payoff is to have in person friends with common aspirations as me
    – It will impact others, but providing low-cost resources and support
    – I need to be a courageous person with confidence in myself, who knows I have plenty to share
I pruned several ‘tracking’ tasks, like keeping up with my food exercise logs. These things have been helpful in improving my health, but it can be draining to have so many things to keep track of. It feels much lighter giving myself permission to take those off my plate.

  186. My goal is to “evolve” this year.
Payoff: My wellbeing and moods will be better, more money from work and more ‘accomplishment’ feeling.
Impact: If I’m well, I can help more people and help teach them what I’ve learned through evolving.
Become: A butterfly, for lack of a better term!

Pruned: The idea I have to write X number of words this year to consider myself a “writer.”

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Here’s to your evolution, you beautiful butterfly! We can’t wait for all the positive change this year will bring for you, Katy-Rose. Sending lots of love and positive wishes!

  187. Happy New Year Marie & Team!

Perfect timing for this as my mind is racing with ideas. My BIG goal this year is launching my own production company so that I may collaborate with and support other creatives in the areas of publishing, photography and filmmaking.

In order for me to realize this goal, I know I need to better develop my business skills. I’m very organized and know I can do it, yet I’m a creative and that’s where my inner child likes to play. However, I feel I have so much to offer and can really make a difference.

Thanks so much for this helpful tip. I know it will be a game changer.

  188. the video first upset me a little, and this is in not knowing how to it and of course (even not as a native speaker) understand the English, and mentally understand this exercise, yet I feel it is a structure, and it needs something extra. Where I celebrate myself for today, is not to immediately run away from these feelings and this video “not for me” or the opposite jump on it and get lost. I listened wrote down the questions and listened to myself and found my answer on how I am going to do it. The issue is, I have big plans and of many of them they are so new, I have no idea how I am going to do it. So planning it in, what is my weakest point (and why stuff is not becoming reality) is simply say then and then I want this to be ready. This is that part of just show up and do it. And well what it is, is what it is, improvements come over time. Besides that, I want to set up my own business so a lot is coming to me, create a plan or more a road map of doing it step by step. So again, thanks this video truly helps. I have written all the questions down and I am going to use as a foundation to schedule out the year and even do that step by step.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

GO Harma! So glad to hear this was helpful for you. Thank you for taking the time to watch and give this exercise a try. We’re cheering you on in 2019 and beyond as you go for your dreams!

  189. Anna

    I love you Marie!

  190. And my second comment:
-what is my one project or goal I am committed to bringing to life this year?
That is completing a course I started 2,5 years ago and bringing all I have learned and experienced there into a business. In other words that all, I have learned start earning me money.
    – one project or goal that I pruned as a result of this process?
It is not a specific project or goal, more a way of doing. And that is that it has to perfect, I like quality and I have high standards, that I keep, what I let go is that is already must have that high quality at step one. Creating quality content is a process that unfolds step by step doing it and learning it (this is also focused on business creating, working with people and receiving money for it).

  191. Dave Lee

For those who just cannot prune, maybe this will help: PRIORITIZE, then let the calendar exercise do your pruning for you. When you can only block out time for the first 3-5 priorities, you’ll have to put the other 15-30 on a back burner until your calendar opens up. They aren’t permanently deleted but they are no longer holding you back.

  192. arran oloughlin

Sometimes it takes someone else to pull you back out of a funk. Someone to spell out the basics. That’s why I like this page and why I follow Maria. When you have wracked your brain on complicated solutions to personal finances amongst other things and Maria brings on a specialist to spell it out kid style… that helps. It is never the solution but it definitely helped to refocuse, I assume that the underlying idea is to clarify the general allowing creativity and emotionaly charged ethical work collaboration to blossom and I commend Maria and her team on the work. Happy new year . Keep up the good work.

  193. Creating an online community in well being, to motivate, educate and facilitate a daily 9 minute workout during the working week and advocating for whole food nutrition.
    Pay off: financial independence
Others: providing effective and efficient 9 minute cardio, core and strength workouts that improve health, fitness and well being.
Who: focused, organized and disciplined with my business marketing
Thank you Marie! I’ve downloaded the planner and I’m on my way.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Sounds like an absolutely awesome offering, Anna! Sending you all the best wishes as you bring this vision to life in the year ahead 🙂

  194. #1 Goal – escorting a Group to Italy in October 2019. The pay off will be getting to know my existing clients and new clients more personally by taking them on this tour. It will make me “grow” as a Travel Advisor in expanding my services and expertise for my clients. My husband will be coming with me and it will be our first trip to Italy together, a dream come true for us both. It will give me the courage to do another Group Tour each year. Financially, the payoff is in the amount of commission I will make and increase my sales and overall exposure to existing and new clientele. What did I prune to make it happen? My time will be spent marketing it, doing several presentations, focusing outside of my community for more clientele and my expenses will be more focused on this particular project, rather than randomly.

  195. I am launching a new business called the Sales Story Method, and of course as I am planning out all the marketing, I am getting overwhelmed, as for now I am doing it all on my on.

I know the impact of this business will teach more tiny businesses to masters sales psychology in order to sell in a fun and authentic way. To become this, I need to be someone who commits to her word and thats only possible if I focus down to whats important.

I had to let go of a couple of the marketing initiatives and products I wanted to launch as a result.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Wishing you all the best with your launch this year, Yasmine! Sounds absolutely fantastic. Glad to hear you’re feeling focused on what’s most important. We know you can do this and will learn so much about marketing along the way!

  196. I want to have healthy health, happy life and stable finance. That is the goal I have outlined. I found them all from your blog. I admire you, Marie.

  197. Hi Marie,
Thank you for everything you share, that’s very precious and boosting for the days to come! 🙂
I’ve tried 3 times to download the planner but cannot succeed, I get a blank page after entering my details… is there anything I do wrong?
    Thanks for your advice!

    • Hailey - Team Forleo

Hi Beatrice! We’d love to help you download the PDF planner– it’s a good one 😉 Please write to us at [email protected] and we’ll make sure you have everything you need!

  198. Granita

The one thing I have committed to do this year is to develop and maintain a market plan for my new business. The payoff is multifaceted. I will be able to grow my business. There will be multiple streams of income as a result of implementing the plan. My business will be a solution as well as offering an innovative way of advertising, inviting, announcing, etc. The income will allow me to experience life on another level.
I have already mentioned who could benefit from it. Anyone who is having any type of event could benefit from my business. I would also be in a better position to give gifts to my family and friends as well as give to charitable works.

I would have to become the kind of person that is focused, patient, determined, and business-minded. That is going to stretch my way of thinking because I currently teach music in an elementary public school. It should be a very interesting journey this year, but I’m down for the ride.

    • Granita

I forgot to include what I had to give up. I decided to give up “looking” for love this year. Two reasons for giving that up is because I’m not sure that I will be in a position to give that kind of energy or time to a relationship. Also I don’t believe in chasing down a man. I’m old fashioned, and I want to be pursued.

      • Julia - Team Forleo

This is all so exciting, Granita! Your clarity will serve you well and we know that you can absolutely do this. Here’s to an incredible year of growth – enjoy the ride!

PS. We think love will find you when you least expect it – stay open to wonderful possibilities 🙂 XO

  199. Diana Cardenas

Sounds Great-before I get my planner? Any awesome planners recommended? Also, can you provide in a print form of the stages, spheres and steps that is needed, as you stated, to be able to purge and prune. As, I like to have it all in a binder to refer back and forth to and make notes as I go along.–Thanks – Diana

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Hi Diana! We’d love to send you the PDF printable copy of the Purge & Prune exercise. Please shoot us a quick email at infoATmarieforleoDOTcom and we’ll happily send it along to you there.

  200. Penni B

    Hi Marie and team!
I loved this exercise, and it put clarity into what I was already feeling about my (multitude of) goals for this year – what to focus on and what to let go of. For now. (!)
I started out with your three areas (self, relationships and career), but most of my goals and projects were too interlinked … so I followed these intertwined links and came up with six headings/areas for me:
YOGA – that’s mostly business and career, but a couple of self/health things too
SOCIAL LIFE – due to circumstances beyond my control I’ve been very isolated this year
MOVING HOUSE – to a new town closer to my friends and with more work, social and creative opportunities for me – and out of an unsafe environment
FINANCES – gotta get some admin stuff sorted there!
TRAVEL – from the practical of buying a new car to catching up with friends in other parts of the country (see social life!) to the wishlist of my next overseas trip
CREATIVE LIFE – mostly music and theatre – gigs and projects
The three questions and three filters were brilliant for getting stuff prioritised under those headings. Obviously moving house is a major priority and things are underway already there – the move will happen within the month. The financial paperwork also has to be cleared asap (this month) and brought up to date … so I can then focus on my MAIN goal for the rest of this year, which is launching my yoga teaching properly on a business footing.
The payoff: I know already that having a regular yoga practice keeps me calmer, more balanced, more in control of my thoughts and feelings, more resilient – and with better health and a stronger body. I love teaching , and I’m good at it, so I have the enjoyment of experiencing ‘flow’ – and it brings me income. And the deeper I go into studying yoga, the more interested I’m becoming in both the physical aspects of anatomy and bio-mechanics and how we can improve strength through yoga, not just flexibility – and the esoteric and energetic side of the spirituality of yoga.
How will it benefit others: People like my teaching style and they see improvements from yoga too. And I try to create opportunuties for connections amongst my students too, so they’re not just coming to class, doing their yoga and then leaving without meeting anyone. There are social connections forming through my classes too.
Who I will have to become: Someone who lives up to yoga principles as much as possible in life ( which doesn’t mean I have to try to be ‘nice’ all the time, but that I act in accord with my values – acting, rather than reacting from a place of stress or whatever is going on at the time). Someone who gets things done in a timely fashion. Someone who gets the paperwork and financials done properly – whether by me or someone else. Someone who makes a business plan rather than bouncing from project to project with no longterm view. So …, ahem, adulting more, on the emotional and business fronts! … Yup, that’ll grow me!
What I pruned: Some of my music and theatre plans. No I’m not going to write and produce a one woman show this year! Or try to tour with gigs. I realised that I want to treat music and theatre more like a hobby this year – to them for fun, for the social connections and fit them around my work (which is now yoga). I’m going to stop trying to make money out of them this year and just see what develops. I need social connections, fun, no pressure and fewer projetcs, more steady work this year.
And it feels ok. Maybe that’s how it’s going to be for now on, or maybe it will lay the groundwork for the cabaret show, the tour, the plays I want to do. Maybe next year. We’ll see. (Heh heh, you did ask for detail – so there you go!)

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Your clarity on where you’re wanting to focus your energy and why this year is so powerful, Penni. We love the piece about living into your values more consistently, and truly bringing your yoga practice to all areas of your life. Great work with this exercise! We know it’s going to serve you SO well in the year ahead. Cheering you on over here and wishing you all the happiness and success you dream of!

  201. Claudia

Ahhhhh!! ( relief sound) Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This was so helpful!
    As always, you know how…
I could finally sit down and get all of this out of my head, get a clear vision and be ready to take action. Here we go.

Thank you for all you do. And thanks to your team as well. Happy New Year!

    • Julia - Team Forleo

Happy New Year, Claudia! We’re so happy this was helpful for you!

  202. Nga

    Hi Marie,
I knew you when I read “make every man want you” and it changed my life a lot. Thanks so much.
And then I wanted to know more about you, I googled you and I found your channel in Youtube. I watched your videos everyday, yes, everyday. I am learning English, so I watched your videos when I have free time, listened to your voice when I do housework… and I really love you. Thank you again for your share, your encourage, your book, your videos.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

It means so much to us to know how our work has been helping you! Thank you for taking the time to tune in, and we can’t wait to share more inspiration with you soon. We’re wishing all the very best in 2019!

  203. Thank you Marie.
My biggest challenge has been looking at what can be realistically obtained. In fact it’s about a week in and I’ve got my spouse on board with planning things for the years bucket list. As the months get closer we’ve had to reevaluate a lot of the goals to judge what is realistic vs. what would be nice and maybe for another month.

  204. Marie & Team Forleo, thank you!!!!

This year I will complete my doctoral dissertation. I will benefit from finishing this project because I will get a HUGE sense of satisfaction, a PhD, and finallyyyy have a regular salary which can support other projects I care about.

Others will benefit because my fiancé will stop seeing me so crazy over this 1 project (haha kind of kidding here…) and we can have more time together. Also, my dissertation project is focused on improving pain management for women with advanced breast cancer, so the women I work with will benefit as well.

And finally….!!! I will need to become a woman who can move forward diligently despite fear/resistance. I will become more confident in my ability to contribute to the world and my writing/communication skills will improve greatly.

    • Julia - Team Forleo

YAY Megan! We’re so excited for you to embark on your next chapter and share your amazing gifts with the world in new ways. Sending you tons of positive wishes for a fantastic year!

  205. Rom

Love this! I’ve pruned my doterra network marketing business – no more trying to run free classes, give samples. I’m integrating it into my packages and it feels fab – so much lighter and I’m in alignment and not dancing to someone’s blueprint!

  206. This year I’d like to start a Business-development/ I/O Psychology blog to help struggling business owners and those struggling with issues in the workplace. I would like to also in parallel set the groundwork to start business coaching and consulting as well. The payoff would be 1a) get my mind and body back into the routine of learning, reading, researching, writing, being productive and getting things done. 1b) Helping others get to a better place in their professional experience, helping struggling businesses thrive is one of my goals for this business. In order for these goals to come to life, I need to dive into the field, network, read, research, write, and rub elbows with like-minded professionals while learning and who I am and designing what I want my business to look like – on my terms!
One project or goal I’ve pruned as a result of this process, is the selling and promoting of someone else’s product (and its a product that I don’t really even personally enjoy all that much) on someone else’s schedule. The biggest sacrifice is that I can make decent money from this sales business. However, I want to focus solely on being the CEO of my own little empire by selling my own product/services in a field that I am passionate about.

    • Heather-Team Forleo

It sounds as though clarity and focus are truly on your side, AJ. Keep up the amazing work and know that any action in the direction of your dreams serves as momentum for them to become reality.

  207. Thanks For Sharing Your Blog “SETTING GOALS: USE THIS 2-STEP PROCESS TO ACHIEVE MORE WITH LESS STRESS” its Idea is really helpful for increase our “Team Goals, Setting Team Goals”.

  208. Firstly great video Marie, as a gardener (hobby) I can completely identify with the Purge and Prune method.
The #1 Goal for me the next 12 months is to make Youtube videos to promote my creative business. I’ve never videoed myself and I’m scared as hell but I’m taking your advice “Start before you’re ready” . In terms of the 3 filters, it will help me to 1. Feel more confident about my abilities. 2. Show my family and the wider world that I mean business. 3. I will have to become business like and professional and stop treating my business like a hobby.
There are a couple of projects that I pruned from my list 1. Take up Yoga – after using Marie’s 10 minute guided meditation I decided that this is something I can fit into my routine anytime anywhere. Going to a Yoga class just isn’t viable for me over the next 12 months so I’ve had to prune it.
    2. I have decided to let go of the negative people around me and stop accepting their calls for coffee etc. There is no pay off from these people and it’s a negative experience that I don’t need in my life.
Pruning the Yoga is a shame but I know that next year it will probably be on my list of things I want to achieve. Pruning the negative people from my life feels totally GREAT! I don’t think I would have done this before joining B School, but now I have joined I realise I don’t have space in my life to be wasting time with people that don’t have a positive impact on me.
Thank you so much Marie XXX

  209. 1. My number one goal or project you’re committed to bringing to life this year is making 50% or more of my income from self-employment. Not from independent contracting, but from true self-employment. My hours, my rate, my clients.
    A. What’s the payoff?

I will be making more money, at times that I feel most in my zone, with people who I feel good about serving, and I will not feel the weight of having someone above me preventing my own evolution or expansion in business and in life. My rules will be my own and specifically right for me!

    B. How will it impact others?

I will make a positive difference in people’s lives as I will be teaching tools of self healing, offering self care, bodywork, and yoga. There will be so many vulnerable talks about mental health and that ripple effect will impact so many diverse communities.

    C. Who will you need to become in order to bring it to life?

I need to become someone who puts herself first, who sees the value of her own work, who understands that a time investment now mean payment later. I need to become a leader of myself and also an example for others. I need to be willing to ask for what I need and receive it gracefully and with gratitude.

    2. What’s one project or goal that you’ve pruned as a result of this process? How does it feel to let it go?

I have pruned the goal of writing a book. This is something I will be able to do in the future, but not right now. It’s pretty bittersweet, as this is a future goal of mine, but it feels good to know that life is long and it will be there when i’m ready AND what i’m doing now will make great content later.

  210. Dora Taylor

    Hi Marie!
This is the first time that I’ve written a comment on your website. This is part of my goal, I would like to improve my English skills, so I think I should be more active in English-speaker communities. My grammar is not perfect, but I don’t want to wait anymore:) I should practice English as many times as I can.
This video is really helpful for me. In a multitasking life, it’s really hard to focus on the important things. My #1 goal for this year is to make a good presentation at an international scientific conference in July. That’s why I want to improve my English speaking and writing skills. So, my first comment is one of my first step on this road.

    Many thanks,
    Dóra from Hungary

  211. Chrisel Gomez

Hi marie , My name is chrisel
My goal for this year is become a little healthier and lose some weight
try to be more organized and I will follow you’re advices.

-I want to become a physical therapist and next year I want to become the manager
    in my work.

It was so nice watching you’re videos. Thankyou !!

    • Sarah - Team Forleo

Go Chrisel, go! We’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.

  212. Good not only for new year 🙂
    Thank you

  213. Shante

    Hi Marie,
The number 1 goal for me in my financial area is to save money. My plan is to use the cash envelope system and monitor my my spending. This will not only help myself, but it’s beneficial to my family and friends. Another goal in the career field is to decide on if my job is for me , or do I move on. I need to figure out what is keeping in this position. Then plan the next move

    • Renee – Team Forleo

This is a great plan, Shante! We’re cheering you on ?
As you’re thinking about committing or moving on from your job, you might enjoy this MarieTV episode:
You’ve got this, and happy New Year!

  214. @susannasunarno

always love your content, Marie; and I love your songs too. I have a suggestion for you. Why don’t you make an MF song compilation of 2019. I would love to watch the dance and songs. They give goo motivation too, you know. 😀 Happy 2020 to MF & team and to other supporters.

  215. John Garland

My major goal for this year is to write 2 books, a novel and my autobiography. I’ve figured out a way that I can work on each of the fully and completely without burn out from either of them. I gave myself a year to have them both done and can see that I’ll have plenty of time to process them both for publishing before the intended deadline, 12/31/2020.

  216. 1. Get Fit! I’m a fan of weight training who loves strength and the sleep and healthy eating and energy that comes with it.
Payoffs are innumerable and why I chose it. Other people will have to abide by my needs to take care of myself and be deferred (hard for me to say no). And I will have to become a focused driven athlete to get this done.
    2. I pruned my business. What I started 2019 thinking it would become has done a 180. And I let it go. (For now) There’s something out there right for me but it isn’t what I thought it was.

    • Renee – Team Forleo

These are excellent goals, Kaddy! It’s so true –– taking care of our body, mind, spirit is the #1 goal. Otherwise, we have nothing to give! Wishing you success, joy, and health in 2020! ?

  217. Timing for this could NOT have been better!!! I’m writing this on New Year’s Eve, and I’ve just made a decision to put down / set aside / decommission my business, DivaStyle Academy, to focus on my path to Unitarian-Universalist ministry.

I’ve had my own business for more than 10 years – but since it never was able to sustain me financially (or emotionally, for that matter) it really was more of a hobby and a distraction than a business. It wasn’t an easy decision to come to, but since I decided to purge and prune, I feel so much LIGHTER.

I am more focused, feeling happier, and it’s been less than 24 hours.

I really FELT this message and I’ve given myself permission and a commitment to FOCUS (my word for 2020) so that I can expand on the progress I’ve already made and complete my journey toward ordination.

Thank you Marie – for this message, for the Everything Is Figureoutable book and course, and for these lovely videos and this community. You have helped me SO MUCH and I love you for it.

    • Renee – Team Forleo

Yay! We’re so glad this found you exactly when you needed it most, Dianne. And congrats on feeling lighter! That’s amazing, and we’re so glad you’ve reached a decision that brings you joy and comfort and ease. We’re cheering you on for the decade ahead! ?

  218. Ulrika Fallenius

Thank you for this episode, just what I needed. Constantly make plans like this, but as Marie says it leave me feel too over-whelmed with too many things I want to do. So my number one project this year is by December 31st 2020 have my first draft of a novel written. It makes me feel so proud, full of joy and fulfilled. This book will leave readers excited, inspired, happy, sad, giggly, merciful, courageous, determined … Please wish me luck to keep this committment.

Happy New Year & new empowering goals!

    • Renee – Team Forleo

Wishing you SO much luck, focus, and joy as you finish the first draft of your novel. You’ve got this, Ulrika, and all of us on Team Forleo are cheering you on. Happy New Year! ?

  219. Francis

Hi Marie, just watched the video. I found it really useful. Like many others from watching your inspiring videos and reading your book. Although I had a few things on my list this year, my main goal is to achieve my target weight and fitness. Although not major overweight it is a battle I’ve had for years and this year I know I’m going to achieve it. I’ve pruned having a successful business, although I wanted to do this this year, I know it takes time, so I will carry on researching and preparing my ideas this year, and maybe be in a position to start something in 2021. The impact or change for me, will be to be totally focused and committed to my nutrition.
Happy New Year to you and your team.
    Francis – UK

  220. I’m super excited this year to launch a new course on helping intermediate singers. I am fully committed to doing it am and trying to look at what to prune to get there. I think I know the answer to it and simply need to cut another project out in the fall of 2020! Woo hoo–here is to growth through less is more!

    • Renee – Team Forleo

That sounds so lovely, Tara! The world does need more music, in my opinion. ? Keep going – we’re cheering you on big time.

  221. Release my digital course on transitioning to a whole food plant based lifestyle!

  222. Amy

Tweet is soooo true. My cutback is time spent on fb so i can focus more on me. Thanks for helping to emphasize that. Soooo ready for 2020

  223. Rian

This is cool, just a pity the download does not happen…

    • Renee – Team Forleo

Hi Rian, please send us an email at infoATmarieforleoDOTcom and we’re happy to send you the PDF directly!

  224. DianaR

Step 1: The most important project… finish the darn website! I have one website for my coaching, but the new one is for a new and very important (to me and to the people I will be serving). It has dragged on and on as I, a non-techie, work on it. It got hacked before it was finished. One of the plug-ins stopped working – but is now back on-line thank goodness. Thing after thing went wrong. I planned to finish it before Jan 31 1919. No such! I’m setting January 31 as the new deadline.
Step 2: Wow! Important as it is I just decided to prune off the annual weight loss goal. If it happens as I develop the new me, that is fine. If not, it is on the back burner just for now, mainly for the “time in the gym that I could be time working on the website” reason. It will probably be revived sometime in the year.
    Thanks for being you, Marie!!!!

    • Renee – Team Forleo

This is beautiful, Dianar! Thank you for sharing your goals and dreams with us. Websites can be tricky, but they’re absolutely figureoutable. Good for you for charging forward despite challenges! We’re cheering you on. Happy New Year! ?

  225. Thinking further about pruning made me think of the typical New Year’s philosophy of making resolutions. The word “resolve” to me is settling for something.
I think in the pruning process – whatever we select as the most important we should make affirmations for whatever that is.

  226. Vidya Krishna Swamy

I have identified my Ikigai which is being a psychotherapist. All this while, i was overwhelmed with taking on too many projects which impacted my studying for the course. Now I am going to cut down other things. What is the pay off- It is gaining professional recognition with which I can reach out to all those who are struggling from mental clutters. What am I to let go of to do this- networking with people right away, attending to every message seeking help. It is a short term thing, but I would do it to be able to help in the long run.

My number one goal is to adopt a child. I have been thinking about it for years, and my partner and I are moving forward with adopting a child between age 4-8 from the state. Spiritiually it is what I want to do right now and am older than most parents so it feels like now is the time. I will have to make it a time priority and become more vulnerable and visible emotionally as people will see me making a change…I am pruning becoming self-employed creatively this year, as I am choosing to keep my work/income life stable through this transition.

    • Renee – Team Forleo

This is lovely, AprilJoy! Congratulations on your pending arrival. Adoption is truly beautiful, and all of us on Team Forleo are wishing you and your partner a smooth adoption process. And yay for self-employment! We’re cheering you on, and happy New Year! ?

My goal in this upcoming new year is to finally after the years of dreaming about it bring to life my own fashion clothing brand. Build something I can be proud of, it’s not easy to find the way how to start but I’m always saying nothing is impossible.

The “feeling” that I would let go this dream? I would literally lost myself. Be my own boss, being independent and live every day how I want with big smile is the best feeling of freedom for me.

Sometimes we have to do things we dont like, talk to people we can’t stand but that’s exactly the moments in our lives which makes us stronger.

Dream big and never stop to learn, improving yourself and the most important, never stop to believe in yourself.

  230. I loved this episode – just the motivation I needed!
I pruned down my goals to just 3: lose those last 5 lbs (got a plan for that), keep my monthly expenses lower (got a plan for that too) and the most important one:
take my Professional Photo Organizing business to the next level by introducing Legacy/ Heritage Videos (yes, there’s a plan for that 🙂 The payoff for my business is that I can help clients share and preserve their precious memories and stories in another manner – via professionally shot and edited video. My husband, who is also my business partner and a pro photographer/ videographer, will assist. I will direct and co-produce. I have the skills and ability, I just need to get the word out. As an introvert, self-promotion doesn’t come naturally so I will work on those skills!

    • Renee – Team Forleo

This is wonderful, Marci! Way to go to set the vision for your decade ahead. I love the goal to take your Photo Organizing business to the next level. We’re cheering you on big time! Keep going! ????

  231. Re branding My Biz in 2020! Im keeping it simple to 3 goals this year. Simplifyyyyyy

  232. Monique

My biggest goal this year is to be more joyful especially when I’m with my kids. This is extremely important to me, and it’s something I’ve been working on for quite a while. I made a commitment to it once before and it was very effective. Then I sort of lost sight of that goal and made other things more important. A joyful family is big part of my decade vision so my plan is to keep it as a priority until it becomes our habit. I cut out lots of goals but the biggest one that was willing to give up was homeschooling my daughter. I changed jobs this year to earn more money to be able to afford an online school for her. She isn’t that excited about it though I believe she needs a different environment. I’d rather be joyful together than cause tension by insisting that she change schools. I put a lot of energy into the things I wanted to create for and with my kids this year. They weren’t as invested in it as I was and so I feel burned out and a little resentful about that. But I increased my income and I feel more relaxed because we have more money and a better income trajectory.

  233. Thanks Marie! This was the extra boost I needed! My word for the year was already “simplify” and this was right on target. I am focusing on writing a book which will help us financial (woot woot) and it’s a story I just need to tell.

The goal I had to let go was as a wedding photographer, letting go of booking as many weddings and out sourcing editing to create more time for writing and less overwhelm! Honestly…it felt good.

    • Renee – Team Forleo

This is beautiful, Beth! Simplify to Amplify is such a helpful mantra to experience more with less. We’re wishing you more ease, time for writing, and a happy, healthy New year!

  234. Jing

This is what I need to do before finishing 2019. Trying to map out my goals and target for each month. I do believe 2020 will be a great year.. We are the creater of our dreams.
    Happy new year !

  235. This is the first year I’m going full-time teaching violin players online all about bow technique, so they can unlock technical progress and express themselves in music!

Last year I pruned my buns off as an overworked violinist with orchestra gigs, a brick and mortar violin shop and a teaching studio with four teachers. The birth of my super-cute twins inspired me to cut everything down to my passion: teaching violin bow technique online and having my online business as a main focus.

The pay off is that I will stay home with my kids while earning a good income and express myself in music while helping others do the same.

The result of pruning is that I just have one business and one goal instead of many!

Although I’ve pruned a ton last year there will always be a lot of shiny objects (hello, online marketing world!) and I have to become even more focused on what’s really important: growing my YouTube channel and making my online program even more awesome than in already is :).

    Happy purging and pruning everyone!

  236. This is so spot on, and yet so difficult because I juggle different hats that all have legitimate goals for the year! That said, I still went through the process. My number one goal for 2020 is to open our ecolodge farmstay in Portugal, Casa Beatrix. As for the pruned project… My memoir-based book that I drafted last year and need to edit. Tough call, but I am confident it’s the right one. I’ll get back to it later. Thanks Marie & here’s to purging and pruning our way to success!

    • Sarah - Team Forleo

Well done, Shahnaz! Pruning isn’t always easy, but you’re exactly right – you can always circle back to those goals later. Often with a clearer mind and greater confidence. Thanks for sharing.

  237. OMG. Purge & Prune Pub is best EVAH! Thanks for all of this. xoxoxo Kat

  238. My number one goal is to live a nomadic life. I started to transition my business (accounting) to 100% cloud based 1 1/2 years ago. Now, I need just a few more clients and the guts to make the leap. I have the RV, the business tools and processes. This year is about the final leap.
I am pruning my clients that will not allow me to do this. This is the year to say goodbye to those who do not accept my lifestyle choice.
I want to travel around North America and experience food, culture, people, places and document peoples stories.

  239. Roshni

AWESOME EPISODE!! Just what I needed, cuz I always spread myself too thin… but have realised I’d rather feel the satisfaction of actually finishing things than trying to have a finger in every pie!
    To answer your questions:
    1) The project I’m committing to is finishing and publishing my book.
The payoff for me: I’ll be self actualised! I will have given birth to my book. It’ll be my LIFE’S work so far!!
Impact on others: It’ll resonate with the people it’s meant to resonate with. And they’ll get value from it. They’ll be inspired. They’ll start or continue their journey… and if they’re already on the journey, they’ll know they’re on the right path.
Who will I need to become in order to bring this project to life?
I’ll need to become someone who follows through. Someone who doesn’t give up when the going gets tough. Someone who is DEVOTED to this. Someone who remembers her ‘Why’. Someone who channels what needs to be said, from Divine Creativity, through her. Someone who sees this through to the end, finishes it and publishes it.
What I’ll be giving up: Doing all the courses I bought in autumn 2019! (Except for two critical ones). As for all the other courses, I’ll postpone doing them until after the book is published!!

  240. Whitney

Thank you for making this video Team Forleo! I constantly start my year on a high and then start to fall off because I’m so overwhelmed. Some times its easier to ignore looming priorities rather than face them when there are so many and I dont want to be like that any more. Cheers to Pruning and taking more bit sized approaches!

  241. thanks so much for this! Unfortunately the free downloadable isn’t working

  242. Gayle

I did this exercise after having completed the 3-step “Decade in Review.” I tried to complete this one without accessing my other results. Of course, my list of to-dos was more limited to really desired items so part of the Purge had already happened in my mind. There were still many “must-do” items on my list. After this exercise, I had my three top goals–exactly the same as for the “Decade in Review”!
My three goals were (1) a specific task for my business with the rest of the business needs flowing around that task, (2) a specific travel destination, and (3) returning to physical fitness which included regaining self-discipline that seemed to have escaped away in my cluttered life.
Doing the purge using the 3 filters really helped me focus and declutter my mind (my first step toward better self-discipline). It also allowed me to table (prune) some tasks, not eliminate, for later consideration when the top 3 are done. What follows is the full filter analysis on one of my tasks and an explanation of one (the biggest) prune.
Surviving the “purge” was taking a trip to Fiji. A dear friend and former student with dyslexia whom I tutored for reading problems is a Peace Corps volunteer working in a relatively rural school in Fiji, She asked me to visit as one of her very few allowed guests. I’d waffled, thinking it took away time I should be putting elsewhere. Writing responses to the filters crystallized why I must go.

Filter #1: There are several pay-offs for making this trip. The most important is that I get to visit my friend and see what/how she has been working with children at risk because they can’t read. As will most dyslexics, my friend’s self-confidence is shaky–she constantly questions whether she’s good enough/done enough. Physically seeing what she has accomplished at hew school (and generally in Fiji) with kids who can’t read will let me convincingly reassure her that she’s done great things. Do this will be a reward to me as well because I get to see that my simple act of tutoring this young adult has cascaded multiply.
Personally, I get the pay-off of fulfilling a dream from my bucket-list. That’s to travel to the South Pacific Islands. I kept justify not going for financial reasons and realized that doing will have so much impact that I can’t not go.
Filter#2: The benefits to others will be several fold. For my friend, she will benefit from my direct observation of her successes (and struggles). I will be able to give her my reassurance she seems to value so much. Simply accepting her invitation (done yesterday) has gone a long way to confirming how much I value her and her dedication to her life’s work. Also, there may be a benefit to the teachers and students who’ve heard stories about me. My presence could reassure them that those stories are real and, with whatever value, will let me confirm that what they’ve started with Jennie is very essential to continue. Oh, AND I will get to participate in her closing ceremony and see her ‘ring the bell” which will make my friend feel less alone when others have family there.
Filter #3: To make this a reality, I have to get organized. I have make openings in my business schedule for the trip. Plus, organization is going to be necessary to get all the numerous immunizations done and allow my system time to make copious amounts of antibodies, to get visas, etc., etc., etc.

One thing that I’ve pruned–merely put off until the top priority items are done–is writing science books for children that don’t treat them as simple-minded creatures only needing entertainment. My books WILL entertain, but they will assume that kids can learn and understand more sophisticated explanations. Too many books “dumb down” concepts to the point of introducing inaccuracies. [Oops, you can see this was hard to think about giving up.]
Pruning this–giving myself permission to table it for awhile–gave me a feeling of relief. It lifted a layer of mental clutter which should result in my focusing better on a very important business task (one of this year’s 3 goals).

Marie, thanks so much for providing this exercise in such a clear, directed manner. It helped me crystallize my thinking about what is important to o NOW. It helped give me “permission” to release certain projects to the future.

  243. 2020 has arrived and because of your amazing simple steps, Marie, into how to achieve my goals I am feeling so much better at facing the year ahead. I am so much clearer that I do not have to solve the world’s problems in my business, just look to the little parts that I can work on, little bites at a time can achieve a lot in the end!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

  244. amy

    Thanks Marie,
The most important thing that impressed me a lot is scheduling. We got so much ideas but without write it all down and schedule it is only a thought.

  245. At the end of 2019 I pruned a business that had been pretty much my whole life for the past 13 years, but it was literally sucking the life out of me (depressed, fighting with those close to me, always worrying), and financially ruining me. I knew I had to end 2019 letting it go and with some deep searching and digging I did. I am so grateful. But I am finding myself a little like…um, guilty that I have what feels like so much time to work on my dream goal. But I am following my dreams, did the purge and prune and very excited for this next year and next decade. I am looking forward to re-doing BSchool this year with the new focus and on growing my other business that never really could shine, which is my true passion and calling, because the other was tainting it.

Here’s to new beginnings, Corry! Excited to see what unfolds for you in the future.

  247. Oh my goodness…I’m watching this one again and thanking all the gods that you’re free to be your weirdo self, with all the power coming through at the same time! Thank you!

    • Jennifer - Team Forleo

So glad you found this helpful, Michelle!

  248. Yes, that’s why I cut back from 11 programs to just 3.
    Thanks, Marie!
