Ever wish you’d wake up one day and a brilliant business idea would strike you like a flash of lightning?

It could happen. But, sometimes inspiration shows up more like… a bee sting.

That’s what happened to Mikaila Ulmer, 15-year old social entrepreneur, bee ambassador, and author of Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid.

At age 4½, two painful bee stings and a recipe from Granny Helen prompted Mikaila to learn more about bees and launch her first lemonade stand. Since then, she’s turned Me & the Bees Lemonade into a socially-conscious business, landed an investment with Daymond John on Shark Tank, sold over 1 million bottles in 1800 stores, started a bee nonprofit, and even fist-bumped Barack Obama while serving her lemonade at the White House.

Don't be discouraged by life's little stings. Get back up and spread your wings. @MikailasBees Click To Tweet

Today, she’s on MarieTV to show you how to start a business at any age — even if you’re nervous and have no idea what you’re doing. If you’ve ever wondered whether you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur, or if your idea is good enough, today’s episode is a must-watch.

  1. So inspiring <3
Mikaila clearly has that "what if?" possibility-focus and I think that's one of our superpowers that we humans just arent taught how to harness. We have a solitary bee hive in our garden and lots of butterfly and bee friendly flowers in our lawn.
I also chuckled at the Buzzness Workbook and look forward to it coming out! ^^

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Here’s to making the world a bit better for bees and entrepreneurs, Katy-Rose. Thanks for doing your part and for being here. It’s always nice to see your name and words in our world.

  2. Mellanie Combest

    Awesome! What an inspiration.

  3. Susan Pitman

Help back at the hive! Brilliant! Everything about Mikaila’s story is brilliant!
From beginning to end, this young woman, her vision, her ability to connect is inspiring. Can’t wait to read the book and taste the lemonade!

PS-I’m not only sharing this with other entrepreneurs that can benefit, but also with some mamas and dads who may be inspired to respond in a new way to adversity in their children’s lives.

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Wasn’t it amazing to hear how her parents both encouraged and challenged her, Susan? What a difference it made in her life and in theirs. They’re all a really beautiful example of what is possible through adversity and challenges. Thanks for watching.

  4. Eija

Wow! She is amazing, just love her energy and wisdom. Thank you Marie for interviewing her ❤️

  5. Christine Sylvie

This is pure inspiration! I loved every minute of this interview. Did I have ONE Ahaa moment? No! I had MANY Ahaaa moments while listening, in a very similar way that many of us have MANY passions and causes that we feel strongly about. I love how Mikaila and her family systematically turned (what may have seemed like) difficult situations – such as getting stung twice or being challenged to change brand name – into elements that pushed them to grow, to learn, to push forward and deeper. I think that this message is a good reminder at a time when so many of us are feeling challenged by the Coronavirus situation. How can we learn from what is happening to find new ways of creating, new ways of sharing what we feel passionate about?
Thank you to both of you, Marie and Mikaila, for sharing who you are.

    • Heather- Team Forleo

You’re so right, Christine! How can all of us find new ways of creating and sharing what we’re passionate about? Certainly, the world needs more of it. We’re so glad the message of this episode resonated with you.

  6. That’s fascinating, the interview obviously but also I went to buy the book and what do I see that on the bestseller ranking it’s at #34 Magician’s Biographies!
I feel like this is a little hint from the universe that I need to get my book registered in that category, cos I’m actually a magician and my book is actually a Magician’s Biography!
Plus her message is for me right now, to be FEARLESS and go full out in promoting my book – NOW!
Thank you Marie! Last time I saw you was in London where I gave Heather Forleo my book to give to you. Since then, I flew to Fiji to do my show and keynote speech on Persistence in front of a gang of BSchoolers and Liz Gilbert.
Then Covid hit and everything stopped. Today’s interviews has totally re-motivated me to get going again! Thank you!

    • Heather- Team Forleo

ROMANY! So great to see you here, as always. We’re so glad that you enjoyed this episode- she’s a special young woman!

We’ve loved seeing your adventures and actually shared your picture with Liz amongst the team because we were so excited for you. We hope that you’re back doing magic soon and know that we’re always here cheering you on- maybe with just fewer feathers than you 😉 xo

  7. Denise Bellmann

Yes, go girls. ?? Thank both of you for your devotion to light that world up with your ideas and inspirations. I feel inspired, empowered and wish you all the best and some ✨magic. ?

  8. kathryn cook

This was very inspiring indeed. It is never too late to reinvent yourself!

    • Heather- Team Forleo

      You’ve got that right, Kathryn!

    Such an inspiring story Mikaila.
You are a young teenager full of energy and thank you for your wonderful kindness for the bees and us humans. You made my day. Thank you

    • Heather-Team Forleo

Such kind words, Joe. Thank you for sharing them.

  11. Wow-what a well spoken young lady with incredible knowledge. She is the kind of person who will continue to make profound impact throughout her life. I’m impressed with her parents as well, who guided her so well along the way. ??

  12. Eilidh Lewsey

This is one of the best episodes of Marie TV and best interviews I have ever heard. Mikaila is the inspiration we need at this time. I’ll be following her journey with interest. Thank, Marie for inviting her onto your platforms <3

    • Heather- Team Forleo

We’re so glad that you enjoyed it, Eilidh. She’s so amazing. I think we’re all going to follow her and see where she buzzes to next. (See what I did there? 😉 )

  13. Hello Marie and Team Forleo;
A brilliant and fascinating young adult who thrives on making the world a better place. Bee Fearless! Believe in human beings and their potential and seeing people win. An empathic leader who shares the ability to understand others’ feelings. Thank you for sharing a humbling with some painful moments story with us. Mikalia continues to stay grounded and don’t let the critics stop you from pursuing your growth. You got this gal. Continue on your success. Marie, thank you again for your continuous effort in providing valuable content to the world. Be well.

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Hi Sandy! Thanks so much for being here and for cheering Mikaila on. She’s a beautiful example for all of us and we’re so glad that we were able to share her story today.

  14. Wow! This young lady just blew me away. So smart, so well-spoken, so business-savvy at such a young age! Thank you thank you for the inspiration. Her parents really knew what they were doing when they helped her along the way. I’m astonished and so proud of you Mikaela! (And a wee bit jealous that you got to meet the Obama’s. So proud of Ms Michelle as well and all she has done for children in the US).

  15. My goodness, possibly the most INSPIRED I’ve ever felt after watching your show. I’m floored by Mikaila’s confidence, clarity and vision. Mikaila, you are AMAZING and you are lighting up my heart in a big way today. Going to borrow some of your power and joy today. Thank you!

    • Heather- Team Forleo

We’re so glad that she left you as inspired as she left all of us. She’s amazing. Pass the power along, Andrea!

  16. THANK YOU, Marie for sharing this most wonderful introduction to Mikaila Ulmer! She is amazing and inspiring. The bees and we are lucky to know her. She is also inspiring. What a future ahead of her.

  17. Laisha Daley

I actually met Mikaila a few years ago when she was a speaker at Expo West. She is truly amazing and inspiring!! Love her story about her brand and wishing her much continued success!

  18. Rox Z.

This interview brought tears to my eyes; in a way that reminded me, that it’s NEVER too late to create! Stay focused and do what you LOVE in spite Of!! Having two talented daughters with the zeal to appeal to others has just illuminated the mother instinct in me to push them out of the tree in order for them to FLYYYY:)

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Rox, you’re so right- it is never too late. Ever. May you walk each day creating beauty and dreams in any way that feels good to you.

  19. Quite inspiring to hear Mikaila’s success story, she has learned so much about running a business already. I plan to get her book to share with my granddaughter, who is still pretty young but it’s never too early to inspire them. There were 2 aha moments for me, first was that it is ok to be a “multi-passion” person, you don’t have to pick just 1! and the second is that children are never too young to be inspired, to come up with and follow a dream nor or are you ever too old.

I am 60, have been involved in family business, small business my whole life. I finally decided to start a business on my own, something that I have wanted to do for a long time, something that I am passionate about and believe in. I started it on 7/19/20 and so far so good. Some might think that at 60 I am crazy to do this but I have the benefit of years of experience and finally knowing what I want and what is important to me. I saw you speak at a Rise business conference in Charleston, then read your book, listened to your pod casts which inspired me to get out of my own way, believe in myself and get this business started. Thank you for the inspiration!

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Debra, this and you are AMAZING! Congratulations on launching your business! What an exciting time for you and your dreams. We’re beyond honored that Marie, her words, and her work have played a role in your journey. That’s exactly why she does the work that she does.

Keep us posted on your progress and know that we think you’re fabulous and inspiring! Sending you loads of Team Forleo love.

  20. Beth

We need more people like this young woman! What an inspiration.

  21. I just ordered the book for my 14 year old granddaughter. So inspirational! Thank you!

  22. Pamela Joy

That was fantastic! So brilliant and inspiring! I am looking forward to watching Mikaila and her business and non-profit grow.
I am going to see if Me and The Bees is in any of our local grocery stores. If not, I’ll passionately request it!
    Thank you, Marie and Mikaila!

  23. Larry

Does anyone know who did her graphic design? It’s killer award-winning work!

  24. Eva

Thank you so much for this Marie TV episode. I’m still moved to tears. And you know what – I think we adults need to re-evaluate our concepts of childhood and children. Luckily, Mikaila’s parents have been trend and change leaders in this respect with their supportive guidance. I mean, honestly, who would have taken a 4 1/2 year old this seriously, refusing to get into a defensive story of bad bees and regret etc. With all what’s going on in the world right now, I’m not worried. There are these new generation power houses inspiring everyone from 4 1/2 to 99 and beyond! Thanks again and big love. Eva

  25. Kelli

    Seriously amazing human Mikaila is!!!

  26. Lisa

What a joy she is! I cannot wait to go read her book!

  27. Pristine

Thank you Marie. I loved this interview and I learned more about you from this interview. This wonderful young woman lit a fire in my heart for my passion, she truly is amazing! Kudos to you for being a light and bringing light!!!

    • Renee – Team Forleo

Yaay! We love when hearts get ignited! We’re so delighted this interview inspired you, and thank you for being in our world. ?

  28. Thank you so much for this, Marie!
    Inspired, and going forward 🙂
    xoxo

  29. Barbara Spikes

Mikaila, you are amazing. I love that you are smart, articulate, and doing what you love. And Marie, thank you for once again finding a marvelous person. I am going to look for the boom for my grandkids as well as myself. Blessings.

  30. What a wonderful story! Thank you!

  31. Jitendra Bhatt

Mikaila is not only a power house, she is a “nuclear power house” – if I may say. What she has achieved at this young age is certainly phenomenal and, of course, inspiring to thousands of young entrepreneurs. I believe, this young girl is a perfect example of how strong determination coupled with grace of God could create magic !! Wishing Mikaila and her “Me and Bees” more and more success…

  32. WOW, WOW, WOW! A wow for Mikaela and her courage, wow to her parents to show her the way to her greatness and wow for Marie and team Forleo for putting this interview together.

The nugget of wisdom I take from this interview is that when we, as adults, offer tools to young people for them to see that have everything needed to become the entrepreneur of their life, we are creating together a better place to live in. A place filled with love, respect and self-power (self-confidence). Kudo!

    • Renee – Team Forleo

Thank you so much, Monique! We’re delighted you enjoyed this interview and Mikaila certainly WOWs us, too! Thank you for being in our community. ??

  33. Bandhu Sharma

It was so exciting, amazing and inspiring to watch that interview.
Today, when so many youngsters are just wandering thru their lives and careers aimlessly and hopelessly, this beautiful girl of just 15 has done so much, not just for herself and her family but for the society and the ecosystem that we live in!
God bless her and God bless the proud parents of this ‘star-entrepreneur’.

  34. Bravo. This girl can inspire many people to do good. So happy for having on earth people like that. 🙂

Big hug Marie and big hug Mikaila (and her family).

    • Renee – Team Forleo

Thank you so much for the kind words, Marta! We’re honored to have you in our world. Big hugs right back to you! ?

  35. I listen to your podcasts every day on my way home from work. I am constantly saying to myself “THIS is the best interview. THIS is the best guest. THIS one is my favorite”
But I gotta tell you Mikaila wins hands down!
The maturity and presence and curiosity of a 15 year old girl! She is truly my new inspiration.
Mikaila, I wish you all the absolute best in this world. You are a true force!!
Marie, you are incredible for being her supporter and letting the rest of us know about this “child”
    Love to you both!
    Margie

  36. Linda Tinson

Mikaila is an amazing young lady! I loved her story and know she is a gift to our world!

  37. Wonderful advice and inspiration! Helped me think through where I want to focus my work helping people process pain and think on purpose. Mind management is a key life skill and can help so many people. I was missing how to include the mission and heart in my idea and wasn’t sure how to connect the business side with the philanthropic side. Mikaila and Marie, thanks for connecting the heart, the story and the way to balance capitalism and an economic engine with an awesome product filled with love and hard work, with important, authentic mission in a fun way! Very impressed and very grateful for your examples and inspiration! I will sell my product AND provide the skills to homeless shelters, recovery programs, at-risk youth, vets and others to benefit who need the skills the most. You helped me reconcile how to serve more people and be able to run my business with heart. Thank you!

    • Kristina - Team Forleo

We’re so glad this interview resonated with you, Brandyn! It sounds like some pieces have fallen into place for you, and we’re thrilled you’ve become inspired by watching this video.

Keep up the amazing work you’re doing!

  38. This story is beyond inspiring! Such a bright lite this young lady is. Absolutely incredible. Her vision, her voice and her determination. Way to go Mom & Dad for raising such a powerful being. ?

  39. What a gutsy little madam, Mikaila is. You certainly can’t please anyone, much less, everyone. I love the way she stuck to her guns and kept her photo on the FRONT of her labels. Brave girl!?

Looking at the possibilities, rather than the problems, is a great moto for living.

I will use that mantra to forge ahead and look at the possibilities of eradicating Sickle Cell Disease in our world.

    Truly admirable,

    Sadé Tolani ☀️

  40. Karen

Wow! What an inspiring and authentic girl!! In her own right she is clearly very intelligent both academically and emotionally and hats off to her parents who nurtured her gifts. We need more families like this in the world.

    • Brittany Jackson

      Well said, Karen! ?

  41. Brittany Jackson

I am deeply moved by this young queen and entrepreneur! There is so much I want to say and too much to write. I was deeply touched and moved by this interview and by Mikaila. As an African American woman, and emerging entrepreneur, I am sooo proud of Mikaila! It’s so sad that people of color are attacked by others who can’t see the beauty in our God given skin color, and contribution to the world. I am proud of Mikaila for not allowing ignorant, racist comments or bigotry, deter her. She and her parents have handled every obstacle she has faced with grace and dignity. I admire you for that! Thank you Marie for how you champion people of all different shades, backgrounds, and ages. I am another multipassionate person, who is greatly moved and inspired by you Marie, and your work! Kudos to both of you and God bless!?

    • Jennifer England

      Beautifully said. I agree. Blessings.

    • Maja - Team Forleo

She’s got our vote too! Thanks so much for being here, Mary!

  46. Sheila Sacolle

Thoroughly enjoyed this interview Marie. I hope you can do more, especially with the theme of climate change and how businesses have the power to change our current situation for the better. (bringing a sense of consciousness into our businesses). Would be nice if you can find business owners who are looking into packaging (plastic free solutions), reducing transportation or fossil fuel usage, or bringing awareness through their marketing/charity work.

Not only will you be targeting/inspiring the younger generation, but all.

    • Ismeri -Team Forleo

We’re happy you were able to tune in, Sheila, and appreciate your suggestions! We’ll definitely keep them in mind as we create future MarieTV episodes:)

This is definitely one of the BEST interviews yet Marie! Mikaila’s passion for her cause & business, and helping others dare to dream like a kid, was such a joy to watch and listen to. No matter our age or stage in life, this young women has a TONNE to teach us all about how to move about in the world. Congratulations on your successes Mikaila, and thank you SO very much for sharing your story & your expertise!

    • Amanda - Team Forleo

Aw thanks Laureen! We so agree — Mikaila is already a force (for good) to be reckoned with and we can’t wait to see how she grows! We’re thrilled to hear that this episode hit home from you, thanks for sharing.

  51. Yeah, kids can teach us a lot – they make life look so simple, so if we just got inspired by them, maybe we could leave some of our stress of “being an adult”

    great article

    • Maja - Team Forleo

Well said, Diana! We can learn so much from them. ?

  52. I enjoyed this episode and reading the whole blog post. Yes, Kids now a days have great mind and we can learn a lot from them. I know a lot of young kids out there have a great idea it comes down how are going to present it to the world.

  55. Mariza

Marie!!! Thank you for introducing this brilliant human to us! What a bright light!

  56. This girl is going to go places in the future , because she has one of the most important attributes of being an entrepreneur , that is to take risk and get started , at the core , entrepreneurship is about taking risk and not just about taking risk , but taking risk in a state of uncertainty , with a young age and no prior experience . These circumstances do not stop from starting and trying , you go girl !

  57. Kory

This is very inspiring and love the content i want to help with being spiritual so here is good link to look into. https://bit.ly/2Ea997m
