If you could wave a magic wand…

What kind of world would you want to live in?

Change-makers Tammy Tibbetts & Christen Brandt dream of a world where every girl is educated, respected, and heard. A world where women are able to create change. A world where girls everywhere are safe and loved.

For 11 years, they’ve worked toward that vision, leading social change through She’s the First — a non-profit I’ve supported since 2014 alongside Michelle Obama, the United Nations, Diane von Fürstenberg, and more than 200 campus chapters worldwide.

She’s the First finds, funds, and supports local organizations to educate and empower girls, so one day we can live in a world where every girl can choose her own future.

“No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” @shesthefirst Click To Tweet

After more than a decade leading the way, Tammy and Christen know what it takes to create positive lasting change and that everyone’s contribution matters. They’re on MarieTV today debuting their new book, Impact: A Step-By-Step Plan to Create the World You Want to Live In.

If you know you’re meant to make a difference but aren’t sure how, this conversation is a must-watch.

You’ll learn:

  • Three reasons well-meaning people get stuck.
  • How to discover your own special gift.
  • A visualization exercise to uncover your calling.
  • How being voted “most shy” in high school inspired a global movement.
  • How to hold healthy boundaries without becoming defensive.
  • What to say when someone “shoulds” on you.
  • The difference between a Band-Aid and a long-term fix — and why we need both.
  • Why good intentions aren’t enough.
  • The critical difference between helping, fixing, and serving.
  • Why 2020 is our “masterclass in resilience.”

Tammy and Christen walk their talk and will inspire you to make the difference you were born to make.

But don’t worry — they won’t tell you to find the perfect cause, donate all your money to charity, or volunteer every night and weekend.

As Tammy says, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

DIVE DEEPER: Learn more from Tammy Tibbetts of She’s the First on how educating girls changes the world and then finally find your calling with Rha Goddess.

Feeling inspired? Profound change only happens when we turn our inspiration into action. In the comments below, let us know your biggest insight and how you plan to act on it now.

If you’re not quite clear on your vision of the world, try this exercise to discover what Christen and Tammy call your “North Star.” It’s one of my favorite chapters in the book, which goes deep into uncovering your personal experiences and how they’re connected to the change you want to create in the world.

Close your eyes and think about the world you want to see in 10 years. Then 20 years. What kind of world would you hope to see 100 years from now? See it vividly like a movie in your mind.

Now on a piece of paper, write down your answers to these two questions:

  • Describe in detail your vision of the world you’d like to see in 20 years.
  • What are the biggest differences between your vision and the world we’re living in right now?

Your path of impact lives in the gap between the world you want to see and the world you live in now.

Use that clear vision as your goal, but don’t be overwhelmed. Progress happens one tiny step at a time.

As Tammy says, “If you have a setback, don’t feel discouraged. This is a long game, and it will take a lifetime. You’re building a legacy.”

  1. Good morning Marie, yes ma’am I want to be able to make a difference by helping others to live a fruitful, fulfilled, healthy. Wealthy purpose filled life. If I could wave a magic wand and make things better for the whole world it would be more peaceful, people would show more love towards each other and their definitely would not be any homelessness.

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Thank you! My name is Julie and I loved this Podcast. I have always had a heart for Women and learning how to make a difference. I’ve worked with those who have gone through Recovery and have been thinking about how I could encourage them to remember their dreams before Addiction and help them to remember that their dreams are attainable. Thank you for being so gracious and teaching me.

  4. Deb Phillips

I am currently unemployed and rethinking my life’s purpose. This conversation was just what I needed! Being reminded that I have something that no one else has is reassuring, even if I haven’t tapped into what that is. I am going to discover my North Star and make a difference in this world.

    • Heather- Team Forleo

Deb, your attitude and perspective during this time in your life is amazing to see. We’re cheering you on as you navigate your journey with your own North Star in view. xo

    • Angelica F White

Cheering for you! A life worth living is found in finding your unique purpose , or gift as Marie says that the world needs.

  5. It so happened that Sparkles was in deed a special needs reindeer but that Christmas his true natured gift helped Santa find his way to the special needs of others.
That Christmas Rudolph and the Dentist were off on. Special mission from Santa.
You see, Santa felt there were children, good boys and girls living good but being told they were bad. We all know that God’s children can have mysterious ways of living…

  6. Hi Marie! You did it again! Another unforgettable and beautiful Episode!
I learned that “In Helping you see Life as weak. By fixing, you see Life as broken. By serving you see Life as full.” Brilliant.
    Keep Zooming!

  7. Mrs. Mitchell

Everyone can’t do everything, but everyone is able to do something. This is profound, we all have our parts to play in society, also, we tend to point fingers and suggest/say that this group or person should do this or that when unfortunately we ourselves aren’t trying to create any form of change.

We all have our own uniqueness to offer and create a change no matter how small that change is.

  8. Tania Constantinou

I would love to leave a comment but there are too many thoughts going on in my head at the moment. Th first thing I am going to do is buy two books. I’ll let you know in 6 months as my thoughts would have settled down and become more structured. Thank you for the ideas.

  9. Barbara Erickson

    Hello Marie,
Thank you for putting this year into a better perspective.
I am the enthusiastic, mistaken mover who has been trying soooo hard to reach my north star of being a leader to our Tribal Citizens here in Petersburg, Alaska. I overreached my position, and now after looking at why I was resentful about my job ending, I see that I made a few too big of moves from the get go. I want to see the organization housing our Tribal Citizens’ futures in Petersburg move forward. I wanted to see a better future for the handling of so many issues. I wrote the comprehensive plan as a “traditionalist” might, and it was too much “foo-foo”. People who have not walked my path have no way to know the benefits of a sweat lodge or the talking circle, nor are they interested in hearing about the Alkali Lake story as, “that was years ago and those people are no longer with us.”
In traditional terms, maybe I was off beam for a Tlingit community, but I only know what helped me in my recovery process. Before Alkali Lake’s training, I had no idea what it was to be indigenous “inside”. I knew the foods and some of the ways of the Tlingit people through the Elders I grew up with, but not to the degree of putting it on paper correctly. I was too close to my subject matter.

  10. Eva

Omg, I love them. Thank you for reminding me(us) to refocus and get back on track with my goal, the mission I was so passionated about just before shit hit the fan!!
Although, I’m very proud of myself looking on my vision board and see many check marks. YAAA!!
    Eva xoxo

    • teamforleo

Keep going Eva and celebrate those check marks. It’s been quite a year! -Sarah, Team Forleo

  11. Dahana

I found this extremely inspiring, and I am looking forward to reading the book in order to get more focused on the ways in which I can make my impact as an intuitive and an empath. My heart has been in alignment with not only treating people medically as a medical intuitive but helping heal girls and boys who have been sexually abused or trafficked. I haven’t known to whom or what organization to reach out to. I look forward to the book.
Thank you Marie & Gang for this information.

    • Sarah - Team Forleo

Thank you for the work you do, Dahana. Sarah, Team Forleo

  14. TAMMY H.

My Impact Plan…? Women be included as teammates. Women can bring experiences and perspectives to any situation that opens different doors. Women can bring experiences and perspectives that create different paths for solutions. In the end, the world wins, when the world contributes to matters that affect both men and women.

  15. Benson Modie

Great conversation there, thank you so much…….it’s the path I prefer in my life too.

  16. i Really like the quote “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”
Everyone can indeed do something, its just a matter of trying!

  17. Mandi Lawson

I loved when you mentioned that when your intention is to serve, you see the world as whole. With all the ups and downs of 2020, I find myself unemployed but inspired to find my true calling. I’ve shifted my perspective to, “how can I use my gifts and talents to be of service?” I’m currently doing Rha Goddess’s book, (after hearing her on your podcast!) I’m loving it even though its hard work. Thank you so much for all you do Marie!

    • teamforleo

Keep doing the hardwork, Mandi. Thanks for being here!

  18. Juliet Chelton

Thank you so much for interviewing these two inspiring ladies Marie, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It resonated with me as I got involved with Blue Cross animal charity here in the UK, following an episode of Oprah on puppy farms. Watching this programme I was so moved to make a change but didn’t know how. I looked into various roles and some weren’t suited, as I felt I would be too much of an emotional mess to make any positive difference. However Blue Cross has an Education Department, where I felt my flair, enthusiasm and gift of the gab would make an impact. I’m now a fully trained Volunteer Educational Speaker and give talks on pet care and encouraging safe practices for children around dogs. To make the talks COVID-19 safe we’re currently doing these via the wonders of Zoom but I feel this is a gift as we can reach more groups of youngsters than before and really get our messages across. I also volunteer with Blue Cross’s Public Affairs Team, which looks into getting governmental action here in the UK and helps instigate law changes for pets welfare. I love both my roles as I feel they utilise my skills and of course make a difference. I’ve definitely found my North Star! Many thanks again to you Marie and your amazing team, you’re born to inspire and do it with such grace.

    • teamforleo

That’s so wonderful, Juliet. What a wonderful thing to be part of. Thank you for being here and part of our community! -Sarah, Team Forleo

  19. Corinna

    Their work is so inspiring!
And so in line with the vision I hold.
Part of which is helping women, in particular those with harder circumstances and in underserved countries, build sustainable businesses.
I’m so happy to hear they are doing this work!

I loved the story about Martha, and how important it is to do your due diligence. This goes along with their differentiation of Helping, Fixing, and Serving.
I’m totally on the same page on that. It is so important to empower each other rather than just swooping in and doing what WE think is best. I think this is a particular lesson for the US as a country of invasion and wanting to “help”.

My insight to action is to research She’s The First more and find inspiration for my own greater vision.

  20. I loved this interview and the real-world advice they shared on how to contribute helpfully. I help small businesses do the same thing as they do with individuals – find that one area the business is uniquely able contribute rather than trying to do it all (find their sustainability superpower). Now I need to write a book so I can get interviewed by Marie 🙂

  21. Glad I listened to it.
    Happy that I pressed play.
Thank you…. I will listen to it again…

  22. So important to find a good cause to get behind.
For me, I was directed into animal rescue through what I do (branding + communications) and the experience quickly “cracked me open”. Once I understood the reality of abandoned and abused animals – not just in Turkey (where I first started helping) – but around the world, it just made me so angry.
I think that’s a good way to find your North Star… Something that makes you so angry, then redirecting that anger into action.

  23. My action step: I’ll buy this Book ASAP.
My aha moment: In order to create the world that we desire to create we need to look deeper, look at the cause of the issue. Also, to have a mindset that includes both: short-term and root causes. Oh, another aha moment: everyone has their thing to contribute with.
This was an amazing episode. Thank you for showing up for us Marie. Your work is a source of inspiration for me and your book a bible I not only read and did but will reread.

  24. Nice article about actual life. This will help to managae the life of people.

  25. OMG, i love you blog! Super good article!

  26. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something, and together we can change the world.

  27. Thank you all so much! This Interview was like glue for all the puzzlepieces in my life. Before it seemed like it doesn‘t fit and never will, but you brought the missing link between my passion and painful challenges in life. I bought the book and started working with it.

    • teamforleo

We LOVE hearing that, Maike! We’re so glad that it was helpful. – Heather

  28. this is awesome

  29. What a great interview! my vision for the next 10 or 20 years would be honest equality for all. I fell like we have made huge steps in the last decade and hopefully continue to build on this. As a business owner I feel and can understand the points raised – Here is to the next decade!

  30. Another great blog again. I’m a silent reader here. 🙂

  31. What an amazing chat, absolutely love it. Life is indeed a challenge we came across many difficult situations in life all we need is motivation and which we can get from positive chats from positive thinking people. Sometimes we are in need of support and we need people to share our problems. Thank you so much for such an amazing content.

    Much Love
