Marie Forleo introduction

Hi!

I'm Marie

You have gifts to share with the world and my job is to help you get them out there.

If you write, make or create anything in this world, I’ll bet you’ve had this thought at least once.

“Darn it. I was gonna write about that!”

“Shoot, I was gonna talk about that!”

“Jeez Louise — I was gonna make that!”

It can happen to all of us. You get a great idea and then you stumble upon a blog post, article or conversation and learn that someone else (or multiple people) have already done it. And done it well.

It doesn’t have to be brand new, it just has to come from you. Click To Tweet

To make matters worse, those people are often more experienced, articulate and well-known.

Naturally when this happens, you might be tempted to throw up your hands and call it quits. What’s the use, right? Once again, you’ve got nothing unique to add. It’s all been done before.

If this phenomenon ever trips you up, this episode will show you exactly what to do when you’re feeling hopelessly unoriginal.

  1. Thank you so much for a great episode Marie!!! This totally happened to me multiple times! One specific example is of me and my mom telling me to do dishes right after you get up from a dinner table. Then you sink is always empty and your house is in order all the time. Even YOU have said it on ‘Marie TV’!!!! And I still haven’t done it for a while. And now finally the idea went though my mind and my house/kitchen is impeccable now :). I think that a person needs to be ready for that specific change in their lives and that’s when they hear it and implement it. So, I totally agree – keep writing, keep producing, keep creating!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Yes! That’s such a great point, Yana. Reminds me of that quote about how when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Thanks so much for watching & sharing!

    • Ha! Love it Yana.

    • DNN

      Yana,

Making healthy changes is only the beginning of your journey to greatness.

    • I totally agree with you, Yana; you / me / a person needs to be ready for that specific change and when they hear it, bang! light comes on…. oh yeah! what a great idea…! Thanks Marie & team for another thought provoking video.

  2. Ah! Thank you so much! I suffer from this ALL THE TIME. It just happened to me today. I’m getting ready to launch a new product and just saw someone else doing the exact same thing and got so down about it. This really helped my outlook.
Often times, I have a mixture of fear, imposter syndrome, and “its all been done before” that I allow to hold me back.
Since I was introduced to you, and enrolled in B School, that has significantly changed. I’m officially an entrepreneur and through your guidance grow in strength and courage every day! Thank you for everything you do.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

I so hear you on the “all been done before” and imposter mix, Elissa. Your new product has definitely never been done by YOU — you so got this. We’re honored that B-School has been a part of your journey too, and we’re cheering you on all the way <3

    • Emily

I’ve gotta tag onto that. My husband runs his own business and ever since we met (7 years ago today!), I was all “okay honey, you do your thing, and I’ll be the safe and steady employed one.” But now that I’m gearing up to start my own side gig, I can’t believe how thrilling and empowering it is!
But I really need my Marie TV fix to show me that business is something I can relate to because my way isn’t like his way.
      Thank you so much Marie.

    • Hi Elissa! Just another vote of confidence, when it comes to learning about ANY topic, I always like to learn from more than one teacher so I can gain different perspectives and points of view. That means I buy multiple books, classes, courses, etc.

And, I’m so glad B-School has supported you in creating big changes and continuing to stay on a path of growth 🙂

  3. Megan

hahaha… It always happen to me. Sometimes when I hear something and I really think it makes sense, later I realize thats exactly what my parents been telling me all my life but I didn’t listen. BTW I love u Marie and you have amazing hair <3

    • Sending you loads of love right back Megan. And my hair thanks you too 🙂

  4. Stephanie

Thank you Marie & Team Forleo for that beautifully illustrated Q&A.

It’s totally true. Sometimes, you need to hear about a topic from another person/stranger and suddenly it clicks.

And yes, over time, we become somehow blind to what our loved ones and friends are saying 😀

    • That’s so true Stephanie, sometimes we don’t truly hear our loved ones.

We innocently listen more our thoughts about them, than the real person, which stops us from hearing something new.

      Thank you once again Marie,
      Heidi

    • Cecile

… ermmm……. usually starting with husbands…. completely and utterly blind and deaf!! :-0

  5. Yes. I’ve experienced this. I’d heard about this skincare line over and over and over again but it wasn’t until I heard someone in particular share their results and experience did I decide to purchase them. So, this is totally true..you can be in a business where literally thousands are doing the same thing you do but hearing it from you can make all the difference. Love and blessings!

  6. Thank you so much, Marie! Sometimes, I swear you can read my mind and heart! Just last night, I was thinking these same thoughts. Then shabam! I get your email as if you just knew what I needed to hear. I appreciate you putting things in perspective for me as it helps my outlook and motivates me to just do it! I’m currently going through your Copy Cure program for the second time as I’m sure I didn’t catch something the first time. It has been awesome! You’re awesome!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Thank you so much for your lovely note, Abby! We’re so glad to hear that this episode arrived at a great time for you this week, and we’re thrilled that you’re loving The Copy Cure xoxo

    • Fantastic Abby! And HOORAY on The Copy Cure! Please keep us posted on your progress with that program. We LOVE hearing how it’s working for you!

  7. Yes! The thing I have heard and read dozens of times throughout my life is that you’ve got to learn to love yourself. It sounded like a vaguely nice, hippy idea and I never committed to learning it. But recent life events and a trusted friend have finally made me see how important it is to love yourself. If I don’t learn it now, I will always be unkind to myself and make bad life choices… The reason I actually listened to this friend is because she was once like me, but has now learned to love herself too!

  8. Elizabeth Gilbert says it beautifully, “The point is not for you to do something that’s never been done before. The point is for you to do something YOU’VE never done before.”

In fact, Liz saying this is EXACTLY the point. The message you’re both saying is the same. But yours is video, hers was in a Facebook post. You have an awesome illustrated cartoon and personal story, she has a pretty Pinterest image. You have one audience, she has another. Sure, some pieces might overlap, but these two ideas expressed in different ways touch people in different ways.

It touched ME in two completely ways. When I read her quote I printed it out and pinned it above my computer. It reminded me that just because someone has written a story I wanted to write doesn’t mean I can’t do it. But when I watched your video it made me think of my husband and our style of arguing. Two similar ideas, expressed by two different people = two totally different effects on one person.

    SO COOL.

What’s even weirder though is that it’s so hard to sick in. In fact, this quote popped into my head the second I started watching your video. I became so agitated about leaving a comment with the quote becuase I thought, “Oh my god! This is going to make me seem sooooo smart!” And THEN I started worrying that someone ELSE was going to leave the same comment or that you’d mention the Liz quote in your video. And I started panicking! WTF?

Even though I logically know two ideas expressed differently can have different results, there’s a little gremlin still in there making me feel like unless *I* do it first, it’s meaningless. I wonder where that fear comes from.

Annnyway, long comment aside, I’m obsessed with this idea and I love this video.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Such a great comment, Marian. We’re big Liz Gilbert fans too, and I know this is something she articulates beautifully in her own words. The way you express things is unique to YOU, and absolutely not meaningless — we all have something beautiful and valuable to bring to the world in our own way. Thanks so much for watching & sharing!

    • Wow Marian, your comment about Gilbert AND the sharing of your realization are so spot on for me. I have exact the same thoughts all the time and even when I’m aware of them, the thoughts about not feeling original (or wanting that to be) block me in my actions. And that’s something I realize now also: that it is actually kinda liberating that you don’t have to try to be original, because chances are bigger you won’t be the first then you would be the first… You only have to be yourself.

And all this realizing because of Marie’s video AND your comment! Ok, this is becoming very meta, but wanted you to know that posting your comment here actually helped someone. And not because you were the first or very original, but exactly because you were yourself and said something someone else said in other words.

  9. Thanks, Marie! I am a physical therapist and yoga instructor and have been wanting to create videos that give tips to my students about form. I have totally been holding back because I have seen so many instructors put out their tips. Like you and Josh, my husband keeps telling me to just do it because it’s likely my students aren’t reading what I am reading/seeing and they would be eager to learn from me. And I have been totally resistant. Ha and now hearing it from you – I just said to myself Marie you are totally right and I need to get going on this idea and change people’s yoga practices! It’s funny how sometimes the people closer to us know what’s best and then you totally don’t hear it 🙂 Thanks for your kick in the butt inspiration as usual, Marie!!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

So wonderful, Jackie! It is definitely funny how sometimes those closest to us are sometimes the hardest to listen to — even if they’re right 😉

  10. OMG! I was just thinking about this today while noting down ideas for my blog. You are amazing and it’s like you read my mind… I’ve been trying to get to my niche for a while and sort of in process of nailing it down now. It is a process and I am hoping to get there. Thank you for this video.

  11. Hahaha such a great point!

  12. Ha – I have been the Josh in this story more than once! But also, I often talk myself out of doing something because ‘it’s all been done before’. This video came right in time for me this month as I am slowly transitioning into some new ideas. I have to remind myself that my perspective is different and valuable. So, thanks for the extra push and reminder this week.

  13. Oh yes! I feel like every single one of us experiences life differently and the way we can relate to other people comes exactly from the fact that we see life with a different set of glasses – and that happens to resonate with the exact people that are right for us.

We all need our tribe, in our personal lives as well as with our clients.

Thank you for the great, uplifting video, as always, Marie – love your camera presence!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Yes! Such a great point about finding the right people, Adelina. Thanks so much for watching this week <3

  14. Tara Virnick

I loved this topic! That’s how I feel all the time. Interestingly enough I’ve experienced the other side of finally “getting” it. I’ve had money blocks for years! I’ve read books, hired coaches , listened to webinars etc. I couldn’t break through my money mindset and self- limiting beliefs about how I would never make money as an entrepreneur. Last week I watched a YouTube video of T. Harv Ecker and in one 2-hour video he literally helped me turn the light on! I feel liberated! So this topic hit me because all of this just happened. My point is I 100% agree with you Marie, it only takes that 1 person to help someone make a breakthrough! Thank you. Love Tuesday mornings! 😉

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

That’s so awesome, Tara — cheers for awesome breakthroughs!
We love Tuesday mornings too 😀

    • Tara, GREAT SHARE. And, I’d even go further to propose that perhaps, all of the other books, webinars and work with coaches you did ‘worked’ by laying a subconscious foundation for the breakthrough that happened with T. Harv. Sometimes you need to see, hear and digest things in multiple ways before it all clicks! Well done and yes, we love Tuesday mornings too 🙂

  15. This is so timely for me, Marie! I have been creating online courses, one on teaching people how to make artisan cheese, and one on how to make fermented foods like Kombucha, sauerkraut and yogurt. Currently I’m working on an online course on how to raise your own backyard chickens.

BUT!!!! Lately I’ve been feeling like, “People could just get all this info for free on the internet! Why should I even work so hard to create this course???”

But you are right: I have my own unique voice and personality, and I’m fun, so there. I will keep working on my course. Thanks for the inspiration, dear one.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

We’re so glad this episode was timely for you, Corina! Your comment reminded me of a similar MarieTV episode about people getting stuff online for free, so I thought I might pass that one along just for fun: http://www.marieforleo.com/2015/02/teach-online/

On a personal note, I love that your course is going to be about chickens. I grew up having backyard chickens and it was the best! 🙂

  16. Audrey W

Hi! I love this point of view and how true it is. My boyfriend is always telling me to share my idea and I don’t because I feel like a fake. Just hearing how you said it really resonated with me. This is not the first time that a soul speaker has gotten throught to me over my boyfriend and parents. I am grateful for all of you at team forleo.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Thank you so much, Audrey! We’re so grateful to have you in our beautiful community <3

  17. TH

A brilliant episode! A simple fact to prove our doubts are BS: let’s remind ourselves that MOST bestsellers’ stories are secondary as is: “not even new”. Maybe people need to adjust to a certain idea before the same idea can skyrocket through another’s work? As long as we’re creating and not destroying, let’s follow our calling no matter how “not original” it might appear.

  18. Hey Marie TV! I invented something cool about a year ago…I shared it with some beta-testers..They loved it! Changed their relationship with themselves and their partners. I’ve had people see it in my home and ask me for it..I was in the process of moving, and decided I should wait until things settle down before I invest in a patent. After we moved, 7 months now..I saw it. Not exactly the same..but the same concept. And they have a book deal from Hay house. I’m not a crybaby..but I cried like a baby. That was only 2 weeks ago, and I’ve been despondent, and without direction for weeks. Thanks for this video.
Not sure how to move forward, but now I feel like I SHOULD.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Jessamina, I’m so sorry to hear that happened to you. As Marie shared in the episode, this concept might have been done, but not by YOU. Keep listening to those little tugs inside and trust that if you’re called to create something in the world, there are people who need what you have to offer and who will resonate with you and your unique voice. We’re sending so much love your way!

  19. Ashley

I’m so glad I watched your video today. I can completely relate! For me, my experience was with math. I have always struggled with numbers and equations. It was a love hate relationship. While I found math interesting (since I love a good puzzle) I just could not make it work. I had numerous math teachers and I normally felt hopeless about the subject. It wasn’t until I had one math teacher my senior year in high school explain it and all of a sudden … it made sense! She just had a way of teaching me that was so easy to understand. Difficult equations that would intimidate me became easy. That was the first year I got an “A” in math. Thanks for the great video!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

What a great example, Ashley! Thanks so much for watching & sharing 🙂

  20. Ella

YES! I’ve been told this before, but it didn’t set in until I did something so frivolous as buy a photo puzzle as a gift. I wanted a 5″ x 7″ puzzle (standard photo size) with less than a gajillion pieces — the point was the idea, not to make the recipient spend hours solving a puzzle — and I wanted a fast turnaround time. Now, there are a LOT of websites out there that make photo puzzles. I must have spent over two hours digging through sites, and I’m sure I just cracked the tip of the iceberg. But you know what? I couldn’t find what I was actually looking for. None of the sites was catering to my specific needs. And if I had found the site that was actually speaking to ME, I would have bought from them in a flash! And as I was going through this whole thing and getting increasingly peeved (and laughing at myself for being so picky about a photo puzzle), I realized that despite the numerous existing sites doing the exact same thing, there is totally room for someone else on the market who does that same thing and does it well.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

      Love this, Ella!

  21. Great video with great points.

  22. Yes it happens to me too! But, by now, I´ll take it to think deeper about it and make it a better message in a different (my) voice and way. If you are unique, there is no Story that was told already 😉

  23. Eliza

Great video! My one big example: discovering Freelee the Banana Girl on Youtube last year made me go vegan. I had always thought about trying it, but her no-nonsense message made me realize that this lifestyle change was URGENT for my health, the environment, and most importantly, the animals!

  24. Shante Jones

This video was perfect for the transitions I am making, one of which is writing a book. I am slowly writing because of the doubts of who will read it, has it been written before… But this video and tweetable gave me more clarity.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Wonderful, Shante! We’re cheering you on as you’re working on your book 🙂

  25. Jineen

This topic, and your storyline really helped me realize what has been holding me back in a lot of things. Thank you for putting in front of me.

  26. Sofia

Hey Marie, I just want so say you are totaly inspiring me and I’m so grateful for all your advices. Love, Sofia

  27. So great! And so right on time. I have a new album out (“3 AM” – my epic break-up record) and have been writing a blog series to go along with it (Getting Over a Break-Up – A Step By Song Guide). Had ALLLL those thoughts at first. But someone I trust said “this stuff hasn’t been said with your sassy voice yet…” and thankfully that got through to me. I’m letting it rip now, and people have been responding with gratitude saying my posts are helping. Heart = swollen. Thanks for reinforcing this very important point. Doubt is kryptonite to creative people. Time to hulk smash that shizz. 😉

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

That’s amazing, Kira! Congrats on pushing past those doubts to put your voice out there, and YES — all the hulk smash 😀

  28. Thank you! I just wrote a blog post and then found one that was written so much better! I was going to toss mine, but now I just might post it, since it’s based on my personal experience. You put it in a whole new light. Thanks again.

  29. What a great message!! My husband has been trying for YEARS (15 now) to get me to see my worth as a web designer. My sister swoops in and gives me a kick in the pants and BAM! I’m working like there’s no tomorrow and the world needs to know about me. He is face-palming……but thankfully just hugs me and knows that the end result is what they were both after. 😉

By the way, Marie, I love whoever does your email marketing and how they personalize it WITHIN the message “You’re a one time mega event in this Universe, Jenny Kimber. Don’t forget it.” I am going to make that into framed message to sit on my desk.

Off to conquer the world. Thanks for the motivation!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Thank you so much, Jenny! Marie actually writes all the copy for our emails herself, and the emails are then personalized for you when our system zips them off 🙂

Huge cheers for conquering the world! xo

  30. Amber

    Love it girl!

  31. Perfection! I feel like you are tracking my thoughts sometimes with these videos. Such good timing. I’m excited to share my creations again.

  32. Haha… yes sooo true. As I write and research my book I see it has been said in other ways before. I won’t let this put me off… I guess it’s never come from me before.

    • Thank you so much for sharing! I am a vegan food blogger, in a growing, low-entry market, me included. That means there is a LOT of stuff out there. I’ve not published many recipes because it’s already out there. Sometimes I press on and share the experience of running into the same item. The hundred-monkey theory is real. I really needed the inspiration, I was struggling with this today over an oatmeal post. I mean oatmeal has surely been done before and isn’t very exciting but man this bowl is soo good, I will share it now anyways. Thank you Marie, for being an inspiration voice to the woman who need you! And I agree, you do have marvelous hair!

      Love, Christa

  33. Ha, Ha! I do this all the time….but the big genius that gives me the sage advice? Well, it’s usually ME. It drives my BFF’s NUTS. They try to tell me something repeatedly for weeks,/months/ years, and then all of a sudden, I have a eureka moment and think I have thought this ingenious thought!

They love me, but God bless them for having the patience with my own narcissism. I did this to my therapist, too, but she was OK with it as it was a part of her “master plan”.

Love it , Marie! Keep it coming!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Thank you so much, Milda! I’ve definitely done the same thing you’ve described too, so I totally hear you 🙂

  34. MY MOM LOVES YOU ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
    – Brianna

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

So sweet, Brianna! Sending so much love right back <3

  35. joyce

Thanks for your voice! You are always welcome! That´s what a need to hear today!!!!!

  36. AllisonD

Totally. This video provided a personal tipping point.

  37. Marie

This literally just happened to me yesterday, but it wasn’t just a book it was the entire company/organization… And they are way more “connected” than me. Even though they are different cities, it certainly made feel like completely throwing in the towel.
Thanks again Marie Forleo for another amazing insight and that picture perfect timing.

  38. I absolutely love this message and I need this reminder constantly. I started a blog years ago where I would collect inspirational images and repost them daily. There are tons of these images out there in the world. But after taking b-school I realized I needed to create my own, in order to get my voice out there. So I’ve been creating an inspirational image every day for over a year now.

I know there are incredible designers out there who create amazing work but no one does it quite like me…and that was a significant lesson for me to learn. Now I get to do what I love and put some positivity into the world.

I recently put all of these images together and self published a book! Thank you Marie for all of the encouraging and inspiring words, for b-school and for being you!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Oh wow, I love this, Lance! Huge congratulations on self-publishing your book — that’s amazing. Please do feel free to keep us posted on your progress. We’d love to hear! xo

  39. This was exactly what I needed to see. I swear you and your team can read my mind and post the exact videos when I need them most!

I launched my blog recently and always compare it to what others do. Thinking to myself that I cannot write about certain Stepmom topics because someone else already has (what if they think I’m copying them, is just one of my thoughts). Well, NO more of that. I LOVE your perspective and it has changed my whole view. I’m sure I will be coming back to this video every time I feel down about this topic. Thank you!

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Thank you so much, Gina! We’re so glad that this episode arrived at just the right time (it is almost like mind reading!), and you’re welcome to stop by anytime you need a little reminder or dose of inspiration!

  40. This was exactly what I needed to hear!!! So important to remind us entrepreneurs that there is room for everyone!!!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Exactly! As Marie is fond of saying, “there’s always more room at the top.” 🙂

  41. This was awesome. Love how you help us to understand and realize that we have value to offer in this world.

  42. Funmi

Thank you Marie. It would be unfair if I do not say thank you.
I find myself stopping in my tracks too many times because I got this awesome idea and somehow, i just discover someone somewhere has done something like or exactly it. I tell myself it’s not original enough! I will only be copycat. I suffer from a classic case of “not being labelled a copycat”. If it’s been done, I don’t want to do it and with that, I keep searching for new ideas and end up doing nothing most times.
This vlog has been really helpful. It doesn’t matter. I will just go for it.
It doesn’t have to be brand new,it just has to come from me.
I love you Marie. You always, always inspire me.

  43. Maryanne Paul

Oh my goodness yes! I am currently studying Life Coaching (a total flip to my whole working life), I am pretty sure that field makes up half of BSchool! There are many brilliant and poignant people here so it is very easy to fall into this trap. Danielle LaPorte has a printable that reminds me, in my own way “I call all of my power back to me now. I am whole and complete”. For some reason, this reminds me I am unique.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Wow, reading that quote gave me chills! Danielle speaks the language of empowerment. 🙂 Congrats on your life coaching studies! We’re super proud of you for going for your dreams.

  44. Wow!! Great comment! Oh, and great dress, too, Marie! I love Tuesdays, because I always get such a lift from your Marie TV episodes. You are such a blessing to this world. Thank you, Marie, for risking it all to bring your light to me and everyone else. Thank God you were so brave. Now keep ’em coming! I applaud you! And as soon as I get rich, I will augment that applause by throwing money, too! 🙂

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

You’re so sweet, Nancy! We really appreciate you and we’re so glad you’re in the MarieTV family. <3

  45. Mika

Unbelievable how timely this is! Thank you for a great post….again. I’ve never commented but I’ve been a loyal subscriber for yrs. I’ve had this feeling more times than I’d like to admit and I’m over it! I’m ready to to move forward and just do me. I felt as if God was giving me that extra nudge through you with this post. Thanks for always putting out great content and advice.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

So glad you made your first comment, Mika! We appreciate you. It’s awesome that you’re ready to make a change and move forward on your dreams. We’re super excited for you and proud of you for making this shift!

  46. Just love how your emails land in my inbox, just when the self doubt starts creeping in!

I’ve just launched a new business venture and as you say started to come across ‘another’ businesses doing nearly the same thing. And yes before I knew it I had started questioning whether there was any point in me pursuing it any further. So I am so thankful I opened you video today. Not only did it make me have a good old laugh at myself and re-motivated me to stay focused and go back to ‘what makes my story unique’. Blessings and a big old virtual hug

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Wow! I’m really glad this video came at just the right time. It’s awesome that you’re feeling more motivated and are excited to share what makes your business unique. That’s wonderful! 🙂

  47. this is absolutely brilliant thank you so much. This has been a significant problem for me but no more!!

  48. As usual, I loved the video and advice. No story from me but I’m wondering if anyone else out there joins Marie and says out loud “the place to be”. Thankfully the dog is by my side so I’m not really talking to no one.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

How fun! I bet there are people who say the tagline aloud. It’s really cool that you watch the show with your dog—we love our two-legged and four-legged viewers! 🙂

  49. I have come to love these videos so much and this one is no different. I 100% could not agree more with pretty much every word you said. We all have a special voice that connects with that one person. Never unoriginal, always unique. Thank you! Also your laughing fit at the end got me chuckling 🙂 #goodwork

  50. Even if others are talking about it, people may still want my unique take on it! No reason to not speak on it. If people are following me, they wanna hear about it from me!

  51. I’ll second already a tone of positive comment over here – you were like reading my mind with this video!!!

    BUT

There is something in your example that bogs me down — Isn’t Kris Carr actually an authority (published 3 books yada yada yada) you listened to, rather than listening to what your husband said (who obviously has much less authority in that) ???

Would really love to hear some extra thoughts on this…

  52. My favorite MarieTV – and I love so many of them. This is wonderful and exactly what I needed to hear right now. Many thanks!

  53. SOOOO TRUE!!
I’m in sales and watch and listen to many sales trainers that offer books, cd’s and online ed courses. After doing so for several years, I just sort of stopped, figuring I’d heard it all already. Fast forward a couple years, and a trainer’s ad caught my eye. I tuned in and what do you know? I actually learned something I had heard a hundred times! And I still read and listen to him today, since his style works well with mine.
    Keep up the great work!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s a perfect example of how staying true to yourself and doing what you love resonates with the right people! It’s great that you’ve found a trainer whose message is exactly what you were looking for. 🙂

  54. So needed to hear this today, Marie! Happens to me and my creative partner all the time!! Like Seth Godin says, “create and ship!” I would add fearlessly to the beginning of that! 😉

  55. Patsy

Hi Marie…. Love Marie TV!!! I am so inspired by all of your videos…. Plus you are super funny!!! Years ago I decided to stop eating processed foods because of all the preservatives, especially Hydrogenated oils and Mono dyglicerides… Etc!! Yuck! I talked to my daughter about it and told her we should all stop eating this stuff….( we ate a lot of plastic margarine… Like the huge tubs for .99! She poop-pooed the idea for years until … lol and behold she met a friend who introduced her to a vitamin and clean eating refining for better health…. She was now ” enlightened” and told ME about eating clean and eliminating preservatives from our food…. Especially mono- dyglicerides and Hydrogenated oils! ” They are terrible for your health” she said. REALLY?!!!! Wish I had known that!!!! Ha!!!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Too funny! So you know Josh’s struggle firsthand! 🙂

  56. Such an essential reminder! What really set my mind AND inspiration free from the fear of someone else having “already done it” was the interview that Marie did with Elizabeth Gilbert last year. In that interview Elizabeth made the statement, “Has it be done before? Yes! But it hasn’t yet been done by YOU!”

That 1 line lit me up and set my mind free from the notion I couldn’t do something that someone else has already done. If something is IN you, then you’ve gotta chase it and let it out otherwise something important will die, and the world will miss an opportunity to learn, experience and grow from your gifts. Hoo-rah!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Exactly! I’m so glad Marie’s interview with Liz really stuck with you. Liz’s wisdom is so profound. We appreciate you tuning in! 🙂

  57. Great video, as always. I’ve been taking the past few weeks to reinvent myself as a writer and this is timely. I was listening to one of Wayne Dyer’s talks yesterday and he was saying to not get discouraged. Just keep trying and don’t give up. We all just need to find the right audience. And, they’re out there!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

So true! We’re cheering you on as you reinvent yourself. Being a writer is a tough job, so we’re sending positive vibes your way.

  58. Paula

I went into this video with all kinds of “I know that” attitude … And came out of it realizing that I was wrong! I needed to hear this. Thank you!

  59. Jaja this has happened many times with my husband. Different voices speak to different hearts and different minds and that is amazing.

  60. Jerry Kallberg

    Hi Marie,
You are that special person! I finally got the message loud and l clear. I have been on that roller-coaster ride since I started writing my book and have shut down many times when I came across a recently published book that was similar with author credentials much greater than mine.
I am recharged now and know my book unique………… and someone is waiting to get the message loud and clear.
    THANKS!

  61. This makes total sense but there is that huge thing called “Imposter Syndrome” that I am struggling with daily. It’s the all these people know more than me? What do I have to offer and be knowledgeable enough about to share? I am trying to get a physical and web presence business going and it is not happening no matter what I am trying – including moving to find the right location to build a community or following. Thanks for sharing and hopefully letting me try to throw that imposter back into the backseat of the car so I can be the “life and business” driver.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

I totally hear you, Shona. Imposter Syndrome is tough! Marie has a helpful video on how to stop self-sabotage that I think you’ll find really useful for this: http://www.marieforleo.com/2012/10/stop-self-sabotage/ We’ve got our fingers crossed you’ll put the imposter in the backseat of the car and even leave him at your next stop so he can hitch a ride elsewhere, far away from your dreams. 🙂

  62. Mia

Thank you sooooo much Marie, just what I needed to hear today. I struggle with finding my own USP and sometimes I get it and then I do the whole “yeah but” and today, your video showed up in my inbox, as I had asked the universe what to do with the program that I had just written, what is the next step.

And voila you showed up in my inbox. And that helped because even though I have written the 8 week program, I was wondering “who is going to want this information” “what if there is no market for me” blah blah blah!!!!

But thanks to you, I have moved through the veil of fear, and will continue on my pathway, aligning with the energies of those who will find it.

Thank you Marie, you are my life saver for today.

  63. This message never gets old, such a great reminder. Can I be meta and use this MarieTV episode as an example? I believe this message to be true, and can (and do) tell myself this all day, but hearing it from Marie right now just makes it feel MORE true, like it’s the first time I’m hearing this message! Loves it.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Wow! That’s meta in the best way. So glad this episode helped you see that you were right all along! 🙂

  64. Adelly Josefina

Thank you Marie! I was recently debating whether to do something as silly as publish a Facebook video. EVERYONE does that, so who would want to listen to mine. I am still a little scared but I keep telling myself we review post after post on social media without thinking that watching one will make the next one less valuable. Come on, talk about letting my fears take control. I will definately go out there and make a silly video only my friends will see, have fun and then make another one. LOL. All the best to you and your team.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Awesome, Adelly! Get out there and make those videos — we’re cheering you on!

      • Adelly Josefina

Hi Caroline, thank you for your sincere support! Also, get a different picture of yourself out there!!! You are so beautiful and the weird tan? no gray? background with the side lighting does not do your kind and supportive personality jusitice or invoke the amount of respect it should for your life experiences… I mean live chickens in your backyard! So unique and Awesome! Have a great day

  65. Thank you.. I needed to hear this message today! I am sure I heard it before but hearing it from you really hit me…especially the face palm story with josh. So true!!!! Thank you for always sharing your message and voice

  66. What a brilliant way of putting it. I have never thought of it like that.
Thanks so much for, yet again, expanding my mind a bit more 🙂

  67. Thank you Marie! This is what I need to remember as a nutrition coach! I don’t need to reinvent the wheel, I just need to get information and stories out there!!

  68. It’s all been done under the sun! But YOUR sun’s rays may seep deeper in some shadowed areas more than others! If nothing else learning how to form and then articulate an idea can be beneficial to oneself. Teach yourself and then you can better teach others…Influencing one person toward a better life or a better self: one down and a gazillion to go! Bring you to the game, that’s where the unique factor lives!
Loved this video and it’s message, as always Marie, you ROCK!

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Preach! That’s the beautiful truth. 🙂

  69. Wendy Meyer

Yes, Yes YES! I just finished writing a book (it took nearly two years of getting up super early and writing before work) and now, I’m kind of freaking out. Fear is in the drivers seat… It’s lame (not articulate), so many amazing people are already talking about this topic, and they have degrees, and way more knowledge and experience than I do. People are going to think I’m stupid, and a terrible writer, and maybe in need of a good therapist, they might even feel sorry for me. There I’ve said it. Whew!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful episode.
    Xo,
    Wendy

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

Congrats on finishing your book, Wendy! That’s definitely something to be proud of, especially getting up early in the morning before work to write it. We’re cheering you on and we hope you’ll enjoy this big accomplishment and put your work out there with confidence! You deserve it. 🙂

  70. Mike Robinson

Marie, thank you for this episode. Quick note, I am new member, just discovered you about a week ago. I am also from New Jersey, loved the accent in the beginning of the video, reminded me of my days at Monmouth College. I have been keeping journals, and wanting to share my experiences for years. However, I kept thinking, why does anyone want to hear what I have to say. Your insight and motivation is what I needed to hear “from you.” In fact, this is the first comment I have ever made to an open community. Thanks again, for the push I have been waiting for, for years. Now my personnel experience of moving forward. I was going through a debilitating depression, and it was what my doctor said that started me on the road to recovery: “you have to change the way you think, you have to stop the skipping record in your head.” I heard these words a hundred times, from so many, but it was him and only him that made it stick. In just that brief moment, my life changed for the better.
    Mike
    P.S.
As a great Jedi Master, Obi Wan Kenobi, once stated: “You’ve taken your first step into a larger world.” Thanks to you Marie.

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

We’re so glad you’re here, Mike! I’m so glad to hear you’re healing from depression and you want to share your experiences with others. I know your story will resonate with the right people and they’ll be so glad you shared your wisdom. We’re super happy you’re taking these steps into this larger world!

      • Mike Robinson

        Thank you Mandy.

  71. This was so perfect! It’s always hard to remember that everyone has something unique to add to the world. It’s just not possible for everyone to have the same way of seeing things or expressing them.

Before I became a lifestyle writer, I created a group for screenwriters near L.A. One of the biggest challenges in the group was getting the budding writers to share or even talk about their ideas. Their fear was that if they talked about their idea someone would ‘steal’ it and write it themselves. Many of the members were sitting on several completed scripts and treatments, afraid to even send them out to agents for fear of having their ideas stolen. So these ideas sat unrevealed, unmarketed, because the writers were afraid and didn’t believe in the power of their unique voice. I regularly reminded them to think of three mermaid movies, Splash, The Little Mermaid, and Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. All were scripts about a mermaid, and every single one was different. It’s your VOICE that makes any creation unique. No two people can tell a story about a mermaid, or anything else, the same way. Some writers had the belief that they couldn’t write about a certain subject because it’s been done before. Except it hadn’t… because they hadn’t written it yet in their own voice. That’s the difference.

  72. The way you articulated this is brilliant. Thanks for empowering us Marie & Team!

  73. Aisha

Good subject and definitely greatly made video,
But I feel that the episode doesn’t answer the main question on how to speak so people listen and do what you say / advise them.
Anyway, you are gorgeous and all your advises are so powerful when practiced.
*BtwThis comment form is hard to reach, due to lots of comments I guess. when you scroll to the bottom of the page , it disappears while another comments appears.

  74. great episode! i have clients that struggle with this thought all the time. and this is a good boost to remind me to keep writing, keep creating, keep coaching. THANK YOU!

  75. Angela Clear

Love it! You helped lift me out of a debilitating case of the “why bothers” and a desire to run back to the safety of a 9 to 5. I know I have a voice that’s different I just have to step out and not worry about the rest of the pack. Thank you!!

p.s. please post where you get your amazing dresses! 🙂

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

That’s so good to hear! I’m really glad the “why bothers” have moved on and you’re feeling inspired to share your unique voice. 🙂

Thanks for your kind note about Marie’s outfits! She has a talented stylist that helps pick out her clothes, and she finds them from a bunch of different places, though I’m not sure where exactly.

  76. Jessica

Oh my gosh I feel like Josh in my relationship with my husband! I can’t believe how many times I’ve said something that he just doesn’t jive with, but as soon as it comes from one of his guy friends it clicks. It’s kinda frustrating but also kinda hilarious. I mean, as long as he agrees at some point who cares who it came from first right?

  77. What a Tuesday! These comments come with lots of insight. Am loving it. Love and light to you all.

  78. Dominique Josef

    Oh, the irony!
I have been thinking, lately, of writing about this very subject! And, I have been thinking that it isn’t something that I have seen written about much…til now.
    My thoughts —
I have been reading books on metaphysics, and psychology for many, many, years. I have only recently realized that the proverb —
What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
    Ecclesiastes 1:9New International Version (NIV)

Is true in a sense, but made untrue by our unique take on anything, any subject.
I mean, what if the first person who wrote a song about love, was the only one, because everyone else said, “Oh, that’s been done”.
What if “the Creation” had stopped with one type of tree, one type of flower, bird, etc. because, after all, that had “been done”.
In my life, I have at times needed to ‘hear’ that the darkness I was going through was not…without merit, was not just some huge mistake. I return again and again to these wise authors all expressing essentially the same idea —
“There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands.”
    — Richard Bach
“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.”
    ― Mary Oliver
“Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.” –Napoleon Hill

“When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something’s suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful”. ~Barbara Bloom

“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors”. ~African Proverb
“Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don’t have any problems, you don’t get any seeds”. ~Norman Vincent Peale
    “Problems are messages”. ~Shakti Gawain
“Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us”. ~Rainer Maria Rilke
“The brook would lose its song if you removed the rocks”. ~Fred Beck

Oh my! How very sad it would be if even one of these authors had said, “I won’t write on this subject, because, it has “been done”!
And, I believe there are enough ‘voices’ in the world telling us, “It can’t be done”; “You can’t”; “Don’t follow your heart”; etc.
…and, never too many loving, supportive, wise, voices/words!
Thank you for your video. And, thank you for the encouragement I got to write on this same subject…to take what has “been done” by you, so well, and, make it my own.
Thank you for sharing your unique and beautiful gifts!
I must end with one of my favorite quotes –
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost.
The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate YOU.
Keep the channel open.”
    – Martha Graham to Agnes DeMille –
    XXXOO,
    Dominique Josef

    • Mandy - Team Forleo

This is FANTASTIC, Dominique! Thank you so much for sharing this incredible wisdom with us. 🙂

    • Ada Lincoln

      Thank you, Dominique. Love it.

    • Savanna Vanessa Rae

***Busting out the Post-Its so I can write down all of the quotes you wrote above***

      • Chelsea - Team Forleo

        Love it!

  79. Marie!

I have thought about this SO many times, however, I never put it into a professional perspective. You are so right. Timing and the way someone talks can change EVERYTHING!! Thanks for this reminder. The quote is tweeted AND up on my desk. Woo!

  80. thank you Marie – you are constant inspiration for me!!!!

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

Agnes, we’re so honored to know that.

  81. Mustafa

Thank you so much for this, Marie!
It’s like you read our minds and know what’s wrong with us, and where we’re at fault. You know exactly what to post and when to post it. I love your work, and I hope I grow up to (hopefully) become like you.

  82. You are hilarious and ROCK AWESOME! Loved the Josh and Kris Carr story and cartoon figures. All True! Love it! For me, I can keep learning and hearing things and then one person will say a ‘magic’ word or explain it with their own example, and then it suddenly clicks. Too bad we didn’t have different teachers teaching the same classes in school! People are also drawn to different people and the earth has billions of people so let’s get out there!

  83. Yes! Could not agree more, especially with the example of hearing something someone has been telling you forever, from someone else. Sometimes it does take that one person to put it in a way that you just get it. This reminds me of of the things Elizabeth Gilbert says about ideas and inspiration in her book “Big Love”… Just beautiful and so lovely put! Thanks for sharing this video 🙂

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

You’re so right, Flavia! That idea Elizabeth shares is totally relevant to this one and another beautiful way of looking at it.

      Thank you for watching. 🙂

  84. In addition to the message from a common theme being slightly different from different speakers/writers, it can also be about people (receivers) being ready to absorb the message – for whatever reason. This adds another dimension of individuality to the mix.

  85. Bless you Marie for the reminder x
‘In following our soul compass we end up where we need to be & only ever authentically.
Be you, that which is true.
You will no longer single out what is different about you or caught in a comparison crap trap…because you’re busy shinin your true self.’

  86. Adeline

    Hi Marie!

Thank you so much for this video. I really feel so encouraged by this. Being a marketing student, I find it hard to get a job (I haven’t graduated yet). Worse off, the competition has more experience than me, whether it’s by language, on field experience, more accurate and professional in what they do, and they have more skills. This way I find it so hard to stand out from everyone else in the job interviews. I given up a long time ago, but thanks to you, I might give job hunting another go.

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

We’re wishing you the best of luck with the search, Adeline, and finding the perfect next opportunity for you.

  87. That makes so much sense! Thanks so much for that perspective.
I also think it can be a matter of TIMING. I knew for a long time that I wanted to make a change in a certain area in my life. And on the day I was ready to take action, I received a newsletter in my e-mail from a B-School alumni who was offering a solution to my problem. And I jumped on it! There were thousands of articles, books, programs, coaches, etc that I could have gone with, but it was the combination of connecting to her language and approach and her putting herself in front of her me at the right time. ❤️

  88. Dude. Heard about vegetarianism for YEARS. Didn’t feel strongly one way or another. I ended up taking meditation classes in Manhattan and one day my very short, Indian teacher, Raj, said “Why take a life?” regarding a vegetarian diet. BOOM. I don’t know WHY the way she said it clicked, but it did. I went cold turkey: no meat, no fish, nothing for an entire year. (Don’t laugh at me, all you “real” vegetarians) It was cool because I proved I could do it and it was no big deal. I think I may try going back to that lifestyle soon. But literally, she’s the only one who really GOT me to DO it. This was a great piece Marie and such a good way of tackling this topic. Love always xoxo

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

Love it, Diana! Thank you so much for watching and sharing. xoxo

  89. reanin

LOL poor Josh. I feel like him at work all the time. I keep bringing things up for months and then someone else comes in and says EXACTLY what I have been trying to get across and everyone’s like oh yeah right on. Sometimes I have to purposely get someone else to make a suggestion! With friends too – i begged them to go to sunday morning bar bingo for years and they thought I was a dork until someone cooler brought them. So I feel better knowing it’s not just me. Perhaps not the message Marie intended but helpful all the same 🙂

  90. Thanks Marie. I was just talking with a friend about this yesterday and I recognise that it has happened to me on many occasions. My partner and I write regular articles for a regional paper in Australia and speak to various groups on a variety of topics and I often catch myself assuming that everyone must know this (information, approach, philosophy) or be tired of hearing and reading about it, and there have been times when I would have (ok did!) let that stop me. That is until the day I realised that I talk a lot to others about uniqueness and individuality. I now feel that it’s not so much about what you do or how you do it but the combination of your ‘why’, your love and your essence that makes the difference. Authenticity and congruence. And that is unrepeatable. And no-one can claim it as copyright or intellectual property! You never know what a difference you might be making through your writing or creative work yet if it changes one person’s life for the better then it was worth the risk of doing it in the first place. And the most interesting about all of this is that this morning I posted the following quote by Simon Sinek (one of my favourites) “We can’t be everything to everyone, but we can be something to someone…even a lot of someones.”

  91. Oh YES! Even now after doing a zillion anxiety coaches podcast episodes I still occasionally hear that little voice that says “xyz has been said before…everyone already know all about it”.
I have to say it took a number of iTunes Reviews and emails from raving fans to quiet that bug of a voice down! Great reminder Marie, Mahalo!

  92. OMgosh Marie, thus is such an ispirational hit the nail on the head vid. I am a mother if 4 (all of them grown now) yet when they were young I found my children coming home with these GRAND epiphanies from their friends/friends mothers, about how great an idea they had. All to the tune of my mind thinking….”well, I have been telling you that for months now, or even years”. Great reminder……it doesn’t have to be brand new, it just has to come from you. THANKS SO MUCH 🙂

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

      So true!

  93. Katharina

Love it Marie! Thank you for this episode. This is super relevant to me right now because I’m about to launch a vegan ebook and I continuously had those doubts creeping up on me and that little voice saying ‘but this has been done so many times before’. So this episode came at the perfect time because I feel so much more optimistic now and excited about launching it. Because it hasn’t been shared by me yet 🙂

  94. Timely post. Thank you for this, Marie! I re-launched my children’s writing website this past Sunday and on Monday, I saw many more children’s ghostwriters’ websites, and all of them have more publishing credits than I do. I became jittery again but I know there’s no turning back. I don’t want to turn back either.

So what I’m depending on now is my way of writing and my heart in my clients’ projects.

When I read the header to this week’s post, I immediately thought of Liz Gilbert’s “Big Magic.” Nothing is original anymore but what is precious is the person writing/telling the story from her pov, her heart, and her voice. Thank goodness for these qualities. Gratitude, always.

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

Yes, amen to that! “Big Magic” is indeed very helpful and insightful in this regard.

  95. Amelia

Thank you for this! I’ve gotten variations of this advice so many times: ‘People are always going to have their own thoughts, feelings, and reactions to things. Instead of doing or saying something for a specific reaction, just focus on being the best self you can be. That’s all we have control over.’ Sometimes I default into people-pleasing mode, and I wonder why I feel depleted when someone or multiple people aren’t pleased. Every time I hear it, it feels as new as the first time I heard it. I try to do my best to stay mindful of it.

  96. L

Yes! Just as the teacher appears when the student is ready, the right MarieTV episode has appeared in my inbox, just when I needed to see it.

I was told all through my 20s and into my 30s by both my parents that I should write, that I had a way with words. I didn’t think I had any special talent, and didn’t have anything about which to write, so I just didn’t.
Friends began telling me I should write. I would say “About what? I have nothing to say”.
Then a few years ago, as part of my work, I had to write a newsletter outlining what we were doing. It wasn’t until I had a few unrelated people sharing that they loved reading my newsletter, that I started to “hear the message”. I had begun to write by accident.
I started interviewing suppliers and writing about their products, and the feedback was positive. I was then asked to write a couple of articles for a similar business. They liked my work; I got paid to write something!
So I finally realised that writing IS something I should be doing. I no longer have that particular job, but I’ve continued to write articles, web content and newsletters periodically. I know writing will be part of whatever I’m meant to do with my life, but I have this exact issue with it all being said before, by more qualified, articulate, knowledgable people.
I go through life metaphorically looking over my shoulder, waiting for someone to point at me and shout “Imposter!”.
    It hasn’t happened yet.
Thank you, for your timely episode!

  97. Ada Lincoln

Thank you, Marie. I needed this so much. I also love all the comments that everyone posted on this subject. It’s good to know I am not alone in this.

  98. Kristie

Such a great reminder, thanks Marie!
I get scared that if I’m covering an idea or a process that is too similar to someone else’s then it borders on plagiarism though…. I know very few thoughts are original and we’re a product of all the ideas that we’ve individually been exposed to, but I get paralyzed by this. I want to put together a program to help people truly make change, and incorporate the best ways to do this. But I don’t want to pinch everyone else’s amazing processes and roll them in to my own… But if I think that is the best in a certain area I don’t want to sell something sub-standard either…. Any tips?

    • Savanna Vanessa Rae

      Just do it !

Over-thinking and second-guessing will rot your soul!

Speaking from experience here. I was once so spunky and full of too many ideas, but the comparison and “not good enough” black hole took hold and consumed me.

I quit trying and here I am a year later, fighting for even an ounce of passion & direction. Lesson learned : You can be your best worst enemy.

Turn off your devices and word vomit on paper. Pull all of your thoughts, product ideas, and article posts on a bunch of post-it’s and do a huge mind map.

PS….put down the devices. Don’t say, “just 10 more minutes on Pinterest” or “ok well lemme finish this article I opened in my next tab.” Nope. Quit that shit.

I have 34 tabs open on my phone right now. And oh shit…….I was gonna joke about how I’ve lost time and….. Now it’s 2:30 AM. I swear lasted I looked, it was a little after one. Well F@ck. Behind again! Lol

      Good luck!

      Xo

I raised a family of 4 sons and I had the privilege of being a step mother to 2 lovely girls. My great thoughts and ideas would vanish by the time I had time to think about them again because I was a busy mom. Today the kids are grown, I’m 54, and I finally got that pen and paper to jot down all the creative and cool ideas that come to my head. Sometimes I don’t know what I’ll do with them, but they’re mine. I no longer say “I was going to do that or that was my idea” I just say to myself “I’m pretty smart and creative after all”. My day will come, and it will. Thanks Marie, for your intelligence, your positive and motivating attitude, and all the REAL topics you speak about.

  100. Thank you Marie, I watch everything that comes through with your emails, but I have never commented. I so needed to see and hear this, and I have to thank you for all you and your team do. I have often been in a place of overwhelm, when it comes to the amount of blog posts I’ve been half way through and then one appears with the same ideas, or books come out with exact same coverage as a project I’m working on. I have been slightly crippled by the it’s been done before thing, and have allowed it to hamper my writing and my output. Well no more. Hx

  101. Loved this! Thanks, Marie !

  102. Sabina

    Hi Marie
this message is the best proof that I have never understood why it should be important that it comes from me. With your example about eating it is crystal clear now!

  103. Thank you for this, I needed it today as I am a photographer and suddenly feel like we are all doing the same thing. I surely feel like quitting as I feel there are already other people out there taking the same photos as me, but even better. This made me think that actually, my service, my personality and my style will still be just right for some people, and I just need to keep being me and keep trying to express myself the best I can. Thanks again.

  104. Marie could you be anymore amazing? This is brilliant!
I’ve often wanted to write or create things and this comes up often for me. I worry that I’m pinching someone’s idea especially when some successful people harp on about being copied much of the time. Yet quite often their idea is something I’ve seen or read from other successful people in the same field.
I’d never thought of it this way though – thank you.

Thank you for your kind words, Margaret!

  105. I am in the midst of throwing spaghetti at the wall and creating two online programs for my coaching business. And you can bet that this belief has crossed my mind once or twice — more like a gazillion times— while writing. Sometimes wanting to throw in the towel. But I know I have to keep going at it, because I want to do this, share this and it’s important. So I tweak and try and throw some more spaghetti. So this episode just popped up as I was finishing my free-bee for my program. Thanks Marie!

Wonderful, keep flinging those noodles Christel! You got this 🙂

  106. Oliver

I heard in the past rather sarcastically that I am special from educators, friends, family, etc.

It was not until I heard it from Marie Forleo that I believed that my different way of thinking is something I ought to embrace and learn how to exploit to my advantage.

  107. Hi Marie, this was great! I SO needed to hear this. I used to be totally paralyzed by this fear of “it’s all been done before.” It’s taken time but I’ve slowly become more aware of the fact that as a creative business owner, it’s just my job to connect things together and offer my perspective. Thank you so much for the reminder. 🙂 P.S. You earned another YouTube subscriber! (Hint: it’s me).

    Thanks Marie,
    Elise

  108. This was just what I needed this morning…… love, Love, LOVE!!!!!!! <3

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

So delighted to hear that 🙂

When ever I come up with an idea of something to make and sell I go to Etsy and check out the market. Then I see the bajillion other people selling the same thing and then I hit the belief that I wouldn’t be able to sell anything because everyone else is already selling the same thing. I’ve had so many friends that have said, “But people will buy your stuff because it’s YOU making it! It’s special because it’s YOU that made it!” Case in point – it wasn’t until this morning when this video was starting that I got the message that having this thought is a reflection of my self worth! I DO value myself and I need to start acting like it. What I bring to the world is valuable. Now, it’s time to get to work! Thank you!

  110. Sue

Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your real-life juicing story (I do stuff like that to my husband ALL the time, poor guy) as an example of how I might be the specific conduit of info to someone ELSE.

  111. Maricarmen

    Thank you Marie! Very inspiring.

  112. Ha! So true and so timely. I teach my clients a metabolic nutritional therapy (AKA how to eat, juice and detoxify AKA how to use food as medicine) to reverse their cancer and chronic disease. I also teach yoga. For years I was trying to encourage my mom to do the therapy and a little yoga to reverse her 20 year old disease symptoms but she wouldn’t budge. Then one day, she met a random guy at a bus stop who (probably after hearing her complain about her health) said “you know, you should really consider changing your diet and doing yoga daily” And of course, she calls a few weeks later to tell me how great she’s feeling because she changed her diet and started doing yoga, all thanks to a kind stranger she met at a bus stop!!! Thanks for the reminder Marie that we are all messengers in our own unique ways, especially when we are in transit, trying to get from point A to point B.

  113. Denise

SOOOOO —- I look forward to and love Marie TV!! And was delighted and surprised when my 26 year old daughter’s friend recommended I watch you and I could say, “WAIT — WHAT? I love Marie Forleo!!” And this darling friend as well as all 3 of my adult children have been encouraging me to start my little biz that utilizes my Holistic Wellness and Graphic Design Degrees to create Therapeutic and Inspirational products. Most notably, my therapy wraps. Which is why I am commenting —– because, although I think mine are special, I’ve held back opening an Etsy store because there are tons of therapy wraps out there! I have given and sold well over a thousand — and made each one with specific ingredients (french lavender, golden flax, special textiles, stitching and packaging). My current idea is designing textiles to use for the wraps, sachets, bath sachets, etc. with inspirational quotes, themes, images, designs —- and/or personalizing them. I’ve overthought my branding and held back on getting it out there. I need to quit with the inertia —- and the fears!!! (what about the financial details, timeliness, potential tricky customers, unforeseen kinks, etc.?) And here I sit, wondering ——- if my “thang” could make people’s lives a little better by comforting and inspiring them. If I could make a bonafide biz out of my ideas?! Or — am I thinking I have something special that’s been done hundreds of times before. Am I reaching out at this point to get validation and that nudge? Why not be fearless and just do it?!! Or maybe . . . I’m taking my time. It will happen when it’s ready and supposed to happen. Marie TV is part of that process!!!

  114. Julie O'Toole

And “voila” you are the person whom I finally heard: ” What I have to say may resonate in a meaningful way to someone!

    Thank you

Julie, we’re honored to be the messenger this time! Thank you for tuning in.

    The right words
    From the right person
    To the right person
    At the the right time
    In the right way
    Can change a life
    And possibly
    Change the world.

  116. Marj

Wish I’d heard this several years ago. I had about 100 pages semi-finished on a book about retirement. Then I found a book written by an editor of the Washington Post
that was so similar to mine that it was freaky. So, I changed the format but kept most
of the inspiration. And, yep, sure enough I found a similar book. And then I quit; never did another thing with it. Maybe I can resurrect it . . . if only I can find the time now to do it!

  117. Love this video and topic Marie!! This is something we struggled with before but like you said we realized sometimes you have to hear something again and again for it change your life. Thank you for this and all that you do.

  118. Yes! I love this! Of course! Especially if you are a coach, you’re probably teaching the same thing as many others in your field… but if you think about it that way, you’re totally missing the point.

I’ve worked in film production as a freelancer for years and my mantra has always been “I get the jobs that I’m meant to be on, and you get the jobs you’re meant to be on. I can never take a job from you and you can never take a job from me.” It’s so important to remember that everyone is different!

Not everyone will vibe with you, or him or her. Your people will, and those are the only ones you need to talk to.

    Thanks Marie, Love your work!

  119. This is EVERYTHING! Seriously, it’s so spot on and true! Marie, I freaking love you and am so happy to have just heard this message from you!

  120. DNN

It’s always a good idea to be creative in your own way so that you stay thinking outside the box.

  121. Joanne Larkins

You Rock, Marie. I love your episodes of “Marie TV”.
I may not be the person you will be able to “hear” this from, but I believe you are a “Summer Color” person, and your makeup should be reds with blue undertones, like burgundy etc. There is some wash out in the color of your otherwise perfectly beautiful skin. My experience comes from my own, plus I did sell Mary Kay for a brief few months before I married, plus my Sun is ruled by Venus, and I feel like a know it all, sometimes, especially when it comes to beauty.
Otherwise, like I said in the beginning, You Rock, Marie. I will take that belief to the bank, thank you very much!!! 🙂

recently i went back for a check up with ‘hearing dr’…i had been feeling this ‘…woe is me…’ thingy for several months…we would be surprised who notices these things…dr. started asking me questions not related to why can’t i hear with my hearing aids…spiritual questions…things i didn’t want to discuss with myself much less with my dr…anyway, i wholistically answered his questions…he asked if he could touch my shoulder…red flags flew like lightening bugs…anyway i eventually said ok…since then i have had 4 sessions with dr. and have become a person with a passion for learning again…i am 65 years young and other than a few things, physically, going wrong i don’t feel past 25…well, i am running down faster and more often…this may be a little off kilter from the original thought process, but i went through the neil anderson 2 books and am charging through life…i began thinking outside the box and now i have a new, renewed, zest for my life…now i get hugs when i visit my dr. instead of red flags…the receptionist, the aids…lol…opening the angst, fear, hopeless feelings i had cemented in my heart has opened my life to things i didn’t know existed…my spiritual life is beginning to fall into place…i still have the anxiety at times, but i have learned what i have to do to get past them…i have only 2 regrets at this time–that i didn’t know about this part of life and i didn’t take better care of myself when i was younger…i won’t say my life has been wasted, but i wish i had the energy to put into life now that i had a the age of 25…

I had a similar experience with juicing! Heard about it for years and never was interested. Until I read about it in the book, Medical Medium, and the author connected juicing with a chronic condition I have. And it just clicked and now I juice every morning! Also I’m more open to eating raw foods. I heard for years about it and thought, it’s not for me. Now it clicked for me, and I’m trying it out!

  124. Lydia

I was writing since two years about an very important subject for me, only a small e-book, but still it took me that time to set it up, after work time. Then slowly but surely many other people wrote about it, sh.., I stopped for a while and then restarted on it. Its publishing time and Disney took the subject too. It moved me around and then I thought about your words and though no one does it the way I do. It’s going to be published in October.
    Thanks for all you goodies
    Regards
    Lydia

  125. It happened with my husband and I. He was looking for job and he was wearing a short sleeved oxford shirt, black pants, and black tennis shoes to interviews. Of course I told him he’d never get a job that way and his response was that everybody in the office wore blue jeans including the guy who interviewed him. He would not listen. This was important, so I asked God for advice.
A few days later, a headhunter contacted my husband, said he was perfect for a great job and that he was going to tell him exactly what to wear, exactly what to say and not say, and they were going to get him that job. And guess what the recommendations were. That’s right! All the things I had been telling him.
    He got the job.

  126. wendy becker

Thank you for this Marie. I do have some ideas for some books, samples of which i showed to someone whose opinion i valued. First of all they said this is great,: very master path school of peace: then when i asked ‘do you have any suggestions as to what my next step could be’. They said this time ‘not really innovative enough, its been done before’. Well that has frozen me and ive done nothing more to develop them.
I hear what you are saying but how do you be objective enough about your idea to say ‘yay know what this is a good idea, this is something worthwhile, im going to put my time and energy into this”. How do you know its worth pursuing? Really dont want to waste output and action on something that sucks and i just cant tell!

  127. Another brilliant, and very relevant, episode! So inspiring, snd uplifting. Thank you for being, Marie! X

  128. So great Marie! I’ve just shared your video in my italian blog! Thanks a lor

  129. That’s so true.

I believe also that there are people who have to hear what we’re saying from us, no matter if someone else had said it before.

Thank you once again for a great episode Marie!

    Xx,
    Heidi

  130. You read my mind, it is so true that we think it has all been done before. but not from my perspective. Thank you for the reminder i needed to hear that today.

  131. Omg Marie, it’s so crazy when you post something I needed to hear this week! (Now I wish I had watched this on Tuesday when I could have used it, but c’est la vie. Next time! 🙂 ) I was thinking about writing a blog about how I clean and polish my leather shoes. A mini tutorial of sorts and I stopped and thought to myself, “Why? I’m sure there is tons of info on this already, what am I going to add?’ I realize now that I would be hitting an audience that wouldn’t normal think about their shoe care, but might be interested.

As for the challenge, I have to say it would be you and your MarieTV staff that have done it for me. I’ve read Jack Canfield’s book and I’ve read the Secret, but although helpful, it wasn’t presented in a way that really works best for me. It helps that you are a no bulls lady who uses humor to make your points. I can relate to you better (no offence Jack, love you but we’re just from different generations.)

  132. janice

I´ve always wanting to get into professional photography but i haven’t had the money to buy a nice camera (i´m saving rn tho) and now i see some of my friends, or people that i know being photographers and doing amazing photoshoots and i´m like damn! what new can i bring now, how am i gonna get clients, people are going to think that i just want to be this trendy hipster photographer like everyone else, when i have been wanting to do this for SO LONG and i genuinely like photography! your video helped me realize that although photography is a very commune thing right now, i can bring it up with my own style based on my personality, my stories and my voice, thank you Marie!! (sorry for my bad English)

  133. Boom Marie! Love this. I have suffered from the “it has all been said before” syndrome over and over. A little reassurance that this is ok, is what I needed. Thank you

  134. This is an amazing single idea for a blogger to succeed. I remember when I was stuck at 5 blogs because someone came to me after my fifth post and showed me all the mistakes I had made in my post.
This was crippling. It got me stuck. I was afraid to write another post for a long time.
But the said post kept being viewed and shared. There were more than 1000+ views and about 10 to 15 shares by people who did not know me.
Then I realised that maybe what was a mistake for this person was fine with many others who could understand my language and were more interested in my message.
That again got me back on track and I could overcome my fear of writing.
So your message is really good and we should write for that one person who is going to read it. Thank you !

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Amit, I’m so sorry to hear that happened to you after only your fifth post. It sounds like your work really resonated with others however, and it’s wonderful that you were able to get back on track and keep reaching those who’re really aligned with your work and message!

  135. I absolutely love this video and needed to hear it!

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

So thrilled to hear that, Melissa! xoxo

  136. Totally!
It was actually a similar message that my best friend Hanna was trying to get across to me. I kept saying “I want to be a bit like Marie Forleo, and Shawn Achor, and Oprah Winfrey, but they’ve all taken very different paths and different roads so I don’t know which one to take, and how to make sure I’m not just a bad copycat.”
She just looked at me and said, “You make your own path. Don’t follow anyone else’s.”
And that’s when it totally hit me. I love using people as inspiration but that’s exactly what they are – people to inspire me! When she said those words I totally understood how the best way to be my authentic self and get my message out there was to create my own path 🙂

    • Chelsea - Team Forleo

      Boom! Love that.

  137. OMG Marie, This is a topic that sooooo needed to be addressed. Awesome!

  138. That was really refreshing to hear and read!
I never really thought of it that way. Left me smiling and laughing haha I always knew that no idea is original and I’ve been trying to get that across to my friends (and myself at times) when brainstorming.

The odds of us having an original original idea are pretty slim, but that shouldn’t stop any of us. Marie is totally right. We all have our own uniqueness. It’s why many successful companies incorporate all kinds of people and value their opinions. Why? For a different perspective on the same message!

  139. Thank you Marie. This is exactly what I needed to hear to reinforce my new project. Love your work, Sussan.

  140. Roosevelt

I actually had the same cosseted scenario. This a word from church though. Same verse was preached for about five times by different by different speakers and I could even know what the speaker was gonna say especially for those that followed after the second. Then this other day I was seated next to an old fellow who explained the whole chapter concerning the verse . The verse is John 3:16. Since from that I now understand what love is.
So in my opinion I think every person has his or her pending attributes that are designed like jigsaw. Meaning that for activation only one kind of fit is required. On the other hand that fit is not easily found in the same way one can never know if he she has imparted someone with his or her art of work.

  141. You know if feel like when I’m open to an idea and hear or read about it for the first time then I see or hear it everywhere I go. I’m sure that it was around before I was just subconsciously blocking any messages coming through. I’m now trying to be more open to what is around me so I don’t miss any messages coming my way. Great advice – thank you so much for sharing.

  142. Hi, Im an Orthopaedic sports surgeon, Olympic alternate, and war veteran transitioning into inspirational writing and speaking. I found this episode helpful to me as I venture into a creative, exciting unknown. Yes, most everything has been said before… And.. I feel the world needs more healers right now. Since repetition is the hallmark of adult education, I choose to believe that my unique voice joining the many others offering inspiration and love is worth sharing. Thank you for the reminder. Blessings, Alessandra

  143. Thank you Marie! It’s my first time commenting on your videos. I’ve been watching them for a year now. They are great! After watching this episode I logged in to check my reviews on my latest course – I create online Advanced Excel courses – and one person had written this: “Very very practical and helpful for daily Excel users-> My confusions are almost gone after just the initial sections of the course. Great job!”. As you might know there are a million Excel courses out there – so it’s great to hear that…

By the way – since I also include talking heads in the videos, I watched a lot of your videos to see what you do with your hands & also the general body language in front of the camera – you are such a natural! Thank you for creating Marie TV.

  144. Tarrah

    Hi Marie!
First, because I have never commented on your site or on FB before, I have to say thank you for everything you do and that I look forward to Q & A Tuesday every week. There would be a major whole in my heart if I didn’t hear from you! Second, I have a support to add to the argument for creating even though it’s “all been done before.” For the past two weeks I have seen nothing but Tarzan movie adds. Do you know how many Tarzan movies and TV shows there have been? What about Batman? Superman? These movies have been made over and over again. I remember loving them as a teen. Oh, I loved Dean Cain as Superman! Val Kilmer was my favorite Batman! (Clearly, my hormones ran away with me back then.) My parents had heard these stories before, but they were all new to me as a teen. As a public school teacher, I was thinking that maybe my students may never have heard of Tarzan before. So, for the artist who fears that they have nothing new to add, he/she should know that they are not just putting their own spin on the same story, which makes it completely unique, but they are also introducing it to a new generation who may have never heard it before. Remixes and repeats are essential to exposing the next generation to some really good stuff.

  145. Sumbul Bilgrami

    Hey!
So yes I remember when I was little, my mother telling me that NOT everything had been discovered or invented yet when I told her that ‘Oh everything’s already been done’. That is something which I always remembered.
Also, the upsides of this happening (finding out that your ‘new thing’ has already been done before); one: you try to innovate so much into this just so that it’s different from the rest (I saw in a TED Talk, I guess Adam Grant’s, stats on how a 1st mover advantage didn’t really matter much).
Secondly, what happens is that when you DO come upon that ONE idea that’s different, that’s not out there, you have an even stronger drive to latch on to it!

So that’s my 2 cents! Wrote it in the hope that it helps someone out there. Thanks for the video!
    -Sumbul

  146. Olga

Yes ma’am, I did with teaching English, I was teaching English and then I met this special and famous English teacher in Spain who was teaching it on the radio in such a simple and interesting way that I used their materials to teach it myself…
I am Spaniard and I teach English in my country (Spain), although I got to really learn it by living with Americans..

A big hug from here and love your videos and stuff you do!

    Muak!

  147. I’ve been away for a while and this new website is an experience! lol! I loved this analogy! It really drove the whole point home.

  148. Mary Lahti

Hey Marie, I was going to write about that too. HA! Actually, yes, in my voice. What you demonstrate is so very true. Sometimes it takes the right person or the right wording and then sometimes, we are just not ready ourselves to open to a particular idea. Then finally, it all connects. All of the prodding by the Josh types of our being sets the stage in prep I suppose. I too will search for the right person that I feel I can connect with or trust before I will move forward with a thought, idea or product. So to your point, every voice reaches someone and it could be that right time for that someone. Thanks for the reminder. Cheers!

  149. Dear Marie, I love this! In my counseling practice I call these “Velveteen Rabbit” moments. Sometimes it takes repetition and the right timing to make advice become “real” to people. 🙂 Thank you as always for your wonderful videos. I enjoy them so much.

  150. KLee

    Wow,
I am so happy to have found your sight after googling about competition. You have given me a totally different perspective about seeing competitors as colleagues. I so agree. I am launching/expanding my child care business and I became a bit afraid about other people who are doing similar models. Your tweetable…. “It doesn’t have to be brand new, it just has to come from you!”…has totally shifted my perspective and confirmed that I must move forward with building this brand!
Thanks for helping me to remember what deep down in my soul I knew… My gift is unique… Nobody can do what I was put here on earth to do for children and my way is going to make a difference because I’m different and it’s okay!
You are the BOMB Miss Marie! I can’t wait to read more from you!
I wish you the absolute best and continued success.

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

KLee, thank you so much for stopping by and for your kind words. We’re thrilled that you found us, and that this episode was an inspiration to you. You’re the bomb too, and we can’t wait to share more with you! xoxo

  151. this is awesome really awesome.. thanks…

  152. This is so thrue. I experienced it with my son. No mather how many time I told him what he should take for school program, he would’nt ear it. But when the mother of his girl friend told him the same thing… he got it!
    :\

  153. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this topic! It happens to me WAY too often. I believe my mother would resonate with your beau. It never mattered what she told me, if I heard it from her, I NEVER listened! When I heard it from a teacher or on TV, I would go to her with, “Mom, I heard the greatest idea today”. I’m not sure why I’m still alive today. This was a great topic and you really helped me overcome how I was feeling about my own blog. Thank you again!

  154. This was a perfect episode for me. Yikes! Wowza. This happens to me all the time, and I’m in an industry (nonfiction writing and journalism) where getting to the story and telling it first is especially prized. I really appreciate your emphasis of telling a story in my voice and with my experience to make it unique. This will not be easy, but I’m inspired by your sage words and fun episode. Thanks. Lyrysa

  155. This is profound! Thank you! I’m just starting to really write and blog for my business as a body image coach and it is so soothing to be reminded of the value of my voice within the chorus. And I realize, I don’t want to be alone and the only one saying what I’m saying. I love being part of a greater movement and a greater collective helping people make peace with food and love their bodies! This is such a great shift from being competitive and isolating myself to being supportive (and supported) and connecting with the the amazing community that’s here. Thank you, Marie!

  156. Michaela

Oh my! Badly needed this! Thanks for this, Marie!

  157. HI Marie,
Love the Show’s they have been fabulous , so are you. Love your glam squad and Hair.

What if you have a million great ideas, Have them hammered out and designed out. I may not have the resources to develop them out. So shall I share this with people like companies, etc. or will they steal them. It happens in design all the time.
How do you navigate the “They may steal it or take it and run syndrome”
I love Bill Gate and Calvin Klein– but … they did it.

Thank god for emails for copies of words exchanged.
    Thanks Stephen

  158. ziv

    Hi there ,
I am starting a website which should have at-least 2-3 articles per week ,
and I found myself lost with writing .
I am looking for some course I can take that will help me with the subject …

    Cheers

    • Caroline - Team Forleo

Hi Ziv, thank you so much for watching this episode and commenting. We actually have our own incredible course all about writing for your business, so definitely check it out if you’re looking for a great online class. It’s called The Copy Cure, and you can find all the details here: http://thecopycure.com/

Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions about the program at thecopycure AT marieforleo DOT com! 🙂

  159. Great episode (my first ever ) and it seems timely , as I suffer from this syndrome. I’ve been contemplating a fitness career for ages. I have 15 years experience and am a qualified nutrition coach but the market is so flooded with “fitness experts” at the moment, especially online, that I always feel as though I’ll be rehashing the same stuff. It frustrates me to no end.

  160. I’ve been having this problem lately. It’s caused me to go weeks without writing.
I feel like it’s all been said before. And what even qualifies me to discuss my topics? :/
Working on my confidence… This video has encouraged me. 🙂

I think that you telling me this (via interwebs) finally just sunk in! Of course, I’ve always known this in my logic, but it takes a lot for it to “click”. I want to add, that timing is a factor in this phenomenon. It may not just be the person who is telling you, but also you may just now finally be in the right frame of mind to “get it”. Often, we have to find ourselves in a vulnerable place, needing help from anyone willing to give it to us, to be receptive to the help that was there the whole time, but we were too distracted to take it.

  162. Empowering video for those who struggle with idea of not being enough original. Thank you!

  163. OMG this is what I needed to hear! This has been holding me back for so long, thinking there’s so many people already doing what I want to do. Like do we really need another healthy food blog, or another at home workout, or more tips on how to live a healthy life. Yep, those are my daily thoughts. Every time I do my research to find new topics to talk about, I find 100’s of people talking about the same thing. Then I think why do they want to hear it from me???? I’m no expert, I have no certification in health and fitness, i’m just an average girl living a healthy life. (Lightbulb goes off) Maybe that’s who some people want to hear it from, someone who isn’t an expert, someone who is just like them and they can relate to. Thanks Marie! I’m so glad I found you, it’s like you are speaking to me and answering all my questions. And B-School is freaking awesome! 🙂

OMG, girl…I loved this message, Marie! I’m currently getting my blog started (and waiting ever so patiently for B School!) and your words really hit home. That’s happened tons of times where my hubby says something and I don’t quite get it, but then I’ll read I book and it clicks. “Really, Kim…didn’t I say that already?” Lol and oops; I’m sorry, hubs! So it made so much sense hearing this today.

We’re so glad this concept is helpful for you! Everyone’s brain works a little differently, so sometimes that slight turn of phrase is all it takes for it to click. We’re excited for everything ahead of you and your blog, and of course, we’d love to welcome you to B-School when we open it up again next year.

  165. Carol Burroughs

Awesome! Thankyou so much – I’m coming out of the shadows so watch out 🙂 Also showed me why my family don’t listen to or take in all my great advice and wisdom – drives me nuts – and drives them away. Going to back off right now and trust they will hear what they need to hear from someone else, at the right time.
    Again, THANKYOU!

  166. Hey Marie excited to hear you are writing again I love 💕 your books.
This is an issue I come across a lot with my book writing students. They go and do their market research on their book topic and see there is already 10-20 books on that topic and get so upset that it has already been done before.

My advice to them is to answer these questions before they decide to walk away from their book idea…
Do they have your unique story ?
Have they got the same case studies or success secrets that you have got your clients?
Do they use your exact system to get the same results as you do?
Can they write about the exact expertise, wisdom and experience only YOU have lived and learned in your lifetime?
If the answer is no to all these questions (which can only be no)…. then get out there and impact lives.
You are so right Marie, everyone has gifts that can change lives.
I have a quote that I like to share with my students that you might enjoy.

“Wisdom is a gift only you can give… be generous❣️

Ps. Let me know when your book is finished, my community will love it. Have an amazing day xx

  167. you know, this applies to musicians, too. As I play tunes that have been around for a long long time, from the Ren period to classical,to Old Time, I get caught up in thinking- should I really learn to play and record this song? Everybody has done it already!

    • Hailey - Team Forleo

Such a great point, Sherrie– this definitely applies to music, too! Some of my very favorite versions of songs are actually covers by other artists, so you never know who your voice will connect with. Keep playing and shining– we’re all cheering you on!

Almost crying right now!!! Tears of joy, of course, sooooo happy!! This is exactly what i needed to ear!! Thank you for EVERYTHING!!! What you are talking about happened to me whit the Stephen R. Covey’s book : Les 7 habitudes de ceux qui réussissent tout ce qu’ils entreprennent! It has really kick me in a right moment in my life, i knew a lot of what it talks about but was not ready before maybe… 😊 Thank you again, big love to all of you!!

  169. Michelle

Maria, this is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you!!

  170. Great advice Marie! It took me a long time to get over this way of thinking. I should really say to get past this way of thinking because it’s behind me now. I wanted to start an educational tea blog for years but always thought every topic had already been written. After all, people have been drinking tea for 5,000 years! What could I possibly add? Finally I went ahead and created the blog anyway because I realized that no one could or had written about tea from my perspective. So that’s what I finally did. That was over a year ago and I’m so glad I decided to venture down the writing path I’d always wanted to take.

I am a healer, a miracle worker. I am here to help others heal, and even though my background is in Business and I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in emotional intelligence, my intuition is guiding me to offer life/spiritual coaching. I firmly believe that everything happens at the right time, at the right moment. I do not believe that we have missed any opportunities because the synchronicity of the Universe is perfect. When we are ready, then things happen.

  172. Cynthia Kalynowski

    Great video! Very inspiring 🙂

  173. Francis

That video was so good. I do have a problem expressing my point across what I want to sell to people. I guess using my stories or experience is the way to touch people.

  174. Thank you! I have been feeling like this. What could I possibly say more? This gives me so much motivation.

  175. Miriam

Thank you Marie, I loved it and motivated

Thank you so much for this. I had never struggled with this before but in the last year the feeling of just being one more talking head in the world was overwhelming. It caused me to stop and reevaluate if I am even in the right place with my business any more. This was an important reminder to keep moving forward and not let that voice keep me down.

  177. This definitely happend to me more than once actually. I have a tendency to look up at somebody and then he becomes my guru. E.g.: if Tony Robbins says something, is instantly believe him. Because I admire him. If John Doe would have said the same thing, it would probably not sink in. Or I would not even hear it. It’s not a very positive behavior because you can be trapped into a tunnel vision. But I am getting there. Always growing ….

This is so true:”when the student is ready the teacher will appear.” Having read many, many books, on the law of attraction, It finally sunk in with “The Power” by Rhonda Byrne, creator of The Secret series of books. What makes the world go round is the power and since implementing it into my life, I’m attracting all sorts of wonderful people and situations and material things. Ex: Marie Forleo’s BSchool. So grateful (another Rhonda Byrne book, The Magic) for all the valuable insights and wisdom.

  179. Thanks a lot for this video. I was going to write a blog post that I thought would be helpful to someone out there. Then I went to google and saw that bigger blogs have written about it with more facts and all that.
    I got discouraged.
Luckily for me, I found your post.
Now I am going to write and publish that blog post in my own voice.
