Marie Forleo introduction

Last August, I stumbled upon a Kickstarter campaign and instantly fell in love.

It was for a documentary film called Dream, Girl by Erin Bagwell, aiming to redefine what it means to be a boss by telling the stories of female entrepreneurs. If you missed it, you can catch it right here.

From the moment I saw that video, I knew I wanted to be involved and lend whatever support I could to make sure this powerful project would be brought to life.

Because the unfortunate truth is that mainstream media doesn’t celebrate strong, successful women. And narratives about women in the media are less than 40% of all content.

The mission of this film is to give women and girls a more complex, diverse and honest look at what it takes to be a leader into today’s business world. It’s not just about telling them to dream big, it’s about showing them how it’s done.

While you know my work is not gender specific, I’m a proud advocate for girls’ and women’s rights.

They’re the most underserved and undervalued resource in the world – making up over 70% of the world’s poor and earning only 10% of its income, despite producing over half its food.

And research shows that women and girls reinvest an average of 90% of their income in their families (compared to a 30-40% reinvestment rate for men). So making sure women continue to rise benefits us all.

Here’s Exactly How Powerful You Are

We emailed out about this film and we received an avalanche of passionate letters back from you, our incredible community.

Our team was moved to tears by the support that came rushing back, and I was blown away by how quickly we rallied together.

I always love a little “behind the scenes” action, so I wanted to share with you exactly how this went down.

  • On August 28th Erin had raised $38,564 dollars for her Kickstarter campaign.
  • On August 29th, we mailed out to you, our beloved community at 10:00am.
  • By 12:54pm that same day — less than 3 hours later — we fully funded the campaign goal of $57K.
  • Within a few short hours the campaign hit $71,301.
  • The kickstarter ended on September 5th at $104,157, nearly doubling the initial goal.

Meaningful media is vital in today’s world, and I could not be more thrilled that together — we’re helping to bring that to life.

I’ve been in touch with Erin over this journey and she wanted to share a bit of her experience and gratitude with you, so I’ll turn it over to her.

A Personal Note To You From Erin Bagwell, The Filmmaker

“When you know in your heart something is right, there is a little light inside of you that grows brighter. This light lit up like a Christmas tree the first time I talked to Marie on the phone. She had seen my Kickstarter video for the documentary film I wanted to produce about female entrepreneurs called “Dream, Girl”, and she was eager to support the film.

I was truly blown away with her authenticity, her kindness, and her story. I had spoken to over fifty entrepreneurs during my hunt for women to be featured in the film, but no one’s journey was like Marie’s. Her intuition, dedication to women, and animated personality are contagious and I knew in my heart I wanted her to share her story in the film. She agreed to be part of the documentary, and agreed to share it with her community in her newsletter last August.

When her newsletter went out the next morning, my phone exploded with notifications. My heart skipped a beat as the number of Kickstarter backers grew as support from her community barreled in. It was like an avalanche of girl power. I was overwhelmed at the love and support we were being given by this incredible community. I cried on the phone with her as I realized that this tiny dream of mine was coming true.

I still get chills when I think about the amazing impact her network has had over the trajectory of my life. Just a year ago I was working at a suffocating corporate job. Today, not only am I making this film full time, but I was able to hire an amazing team of female filmmakers and producers to help me execute this project. Everyday is challenging and terrifying, but honestly I’ve never been happier.

The gratitude I feel for Marie and her community can not truly be expressed in words, which is why I wanted to share with you for the first time the trailer of the film you have made happen.

This is the world premiere of the Dream, Girl documentary trailer that your donations and support brought to life.

This film is for all the girls who dream big. Dream, Girl.”

Since you were instrumental in bringing this project to life, Erin wanted to make sure that you would be the first to see the film’s new trailer.

On this International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future…

I want you to know what an incredible impact you have (and are having) on this world.

The film is scheduled to be completed by fall of 2015 and we’ll keep you up to date on where and how it’ll be distributed.

This post is proof of our collective power.

We have the power to direct our voices and financial resources to things that truly express and support what we believe in. And, with every action we take, we’re one step closer to creating the world we envision.

Thank you for being a part of my life and for continuing to take a stand for social change, meaningful progress and possibility for all.

P.S. How cool is it that the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #MakeItHappen. Fitting for us, eh?

With all my love and deepest gratitude,

Wow just Wow that video made my heart race a 1000 miles an hour. Can’t wait to hear more about it.

    • OK! It wasn’t only me feeling the same way. Well I love the emotion conveyed in the clip!

  2. Ok, all I could say was wow wow wow as the trailer started! Double, triple, WOW! This video just made me stop and think of the opportunities, possibilities, doors and windows opening for women. And it felt like the world was shifting… and it’s shifting in a good direction to highlight and actually take notice of the women who are contributing and have contributed vastly to the economic structure of this world equally as much as in the development, nurture, and stability in their families. We don’t have to sacrifice our families for our dreams or our dreams for our families. What my my uncle once told me resonates with all women, “You have a a voice in this world and it needs to be heard.” Now is the time. It’s time for our collective voices to be heard and resound all around the world. Thank you Erin, Marie, and all the brave, bold, and beautiful big dreaming women of the world.

Thank you for sharing! Goosebumps from head to toe! The timing of this project is sweetly serendipitous for me and my business. I’m a life coach and member of B-school. As a result of being in the B-school community, I have discovered an unexpected niche of working with creative, female entrepreneurs. They are the most fun, open and amazing clients I have ever worked with! They absolutely light me up and they feel like my soul sisters. I’m so excited to work with more of them and for all of us to continue supporting each other on our entrepreneurial journeys to share our genius with the world! Thank you for all of this wonderful inspiration!

  4. This is so beautiful! I’m writing this with tears in my eyes as inspiring other women and the younger generation is one of my big whys and reasons for being an entrepreneur. I believe that as women the best way for us to make changes is to start a movement together so we can inspire other women through our actions. Can’t wait to see Dream, Girl and it’s impact this fall.

Thanks for being such an inspiration, Marie!

  5. Thank you, Girls! I’ve found my forgotten dreams.

  9. This is amazing! I can’t wait to see it. Since being part of BSchool I feel like I have found my people. I LOVE being able to share my own gift of supporting mothers to find clarity and share their own dreams with the world and inspire their children. Love the work of the whole team of this movie and love your contribution and passion Marie. x

  15. Amber

    Wow! Wow! Wow!

  16. Kim

I love the idea but is it enough and is it truthful? Is this the new version of the princess ideal? Are we setting young women up to feel inadequate when they can’t balance it all? Will their be mompreneurs represented who struggle each day with trying to get it all done and raise a healthy family? I think the concept is heart warming because we do want our girls to dream big but we need to be sure our girls are dreaming wide awake as well.

  17. Ainslie

This just makes my heart race and my tummy get butterflies of excitement – for our future and for the future of my little girls. I see amazing possibilities and it is films like this and sites like your’s Marie, that help (in Kim’s words) dream wide awake. We have to have goals to go for, the courage to go for them and the ability to ask for help as Erin did through kickstarter. Anything is possible and to show our girls that they can not only compete, but lead in whatever industry or role or vision they want to is so imperative. It isn’t about having it all – it is about the right to choose your own ‘all’ and be supported in that choice to reach the dream that each individual holds dear. You go girls!

  18. Wow!!! How exciting is this! Fantastic and so encouraging and empowering!

  19. Absolutely inspiring. I can’t wait to see this film.

  20. Vivian Kim

Wow! I love it! Marie and Erin’s film speak the words we as women, girls need to hear and see more often! So inspiring and powerful!

  21. I’m preparing (mentally, emotionally, financially) to launch my 18 year old daughter off to college this year. This trailer made me consider the world of opportunity she is entering vs. the one I entered, or the one my mother entered, or her mother (who was born before women had the right to vote!) We’ve come a long way, baby, but miles to go before we sleep. Truly inspiring. Thank you for sharing!

  22. Wow! Gave me chills! I am very excited to see this film. Amazing project.

  23. Brittany Livingston

This is great! I can’t wait to see the finished product. Women definitely need to be inspired to do what they love. This makes me wonder if I should try to do a kickstarter project to help with what I am doing. I am a pin-up artist and I have been holding contest to feature ladies in my art. If I could I would draw everyone! Any ideas how I can grow this ladies? Or if your interested in having yourself in a pin-up inspired art piece, leave me a reply here.

Just WOW! It really struck a chord in me that yes, we all know Steve jobs, etc., etc and until I found all of the amazing women leading this spiritual evolution and empowering women I had no idea they existed. A Course in Miracles has led me to this amazing community of female leaders and it is so empowering to witness the triumphs and amazing work.that is happening in our world! Marie, Gabrielle, Danielle, Terri…just a few of The Light leaders and I love them all and everything they have taught me so far!Thank you, thank you, thank you! So pumped for this film!

  29. Got my Dream Girl t-shirt in the mail this weekend, woo hoo!! I am so excited about this film. So happy to see the trailer. It is inspiring!! I am going to organize a viewing party with my girlfriends when it comes out so we can all be inspired together. Thank you for brining it to my attention Marie.

It’s motivational coupled with intrigue…coupled with anxiety for me. Because it’s deep inside that gnawing emotion that won’t let you sleep. It wakes you up and asks you to move and take action. Then the reality of so much hits you in the face and your stuck. For me I’m feeling excited to find out more and thrilled that I stumbled upon your website. So much calls to my soul.
