Marie Forleo introduction

Hi!

I'm Marie

You have gifts to share with the world and my job is to help you get them out there.

Ever curious about how people you consider “successful” really think and behave behind closed doors?

I know I am.

In this video, I’ll take you inside my own head and heart and share a bit of what goes on during my creative process.

Be warned – it’s not for the faint of heart but I promise it will make a huge difference.

I’ll also share an easy way to ensure you’re “walking your talk” as they say.

This is crazy important if you’re in the author/speaker/consultant/coach kind of world. (Or honestly, for anyone!)

Note from Marie:  Many of you are asking to see the full-on music video.  Click here to watch it now.

So whatdya think? Leave a comment and let me know. And, if you found this juicy and worthy, go on and share it with your friends.

  1. great vid as usual…thanks Marie

  2. Thanks Marie! Fabulous insight… and it’s always comforting to know that you have those moments too. I know I have them on a regular basis… but I am getting better and better about saying “I’m Back!” and moving forward instead of letting my fears or insecurities keep me playing small. Mmuah!

  3. Thank you for sharing that personal info. Marie! It is so nice to know that we’re not alone when we have self-doubt…when the Am I Crazy? alarm goes off in your head. Too funny that you mentioned the video as an example of your doubt because I love that video and thought: that’s the way to do it…infuse some fun into your business!

  4. Boy, was that me last week! Had the website from hell that totally kicked my a$$ and pretty much had me convinced that I had no clue what I was doing. I just kept talking to myself and reminding myself that people DO tell me I’m good at what I do, and heck, they can’t ALL be wrong, right?
Thankfully, like my momma always told me when my kids were toddlers, “this too shall pass” and it did. Whew.

  5. Needed this today! Thanks Marie!

  6. Hi Marie, When I saw the title of your post, I just had to read it. I thought, “What? Marie, insecure? Self-doubt? Never!”

I’m so glad you’re human just like the rest of us!

Thanks for sharing your tip for overcoming insecurity and self-doubt. My only question is, what if everyone says you’re fabulous but you just don’t feel it?

  7. YES I struggle with that too! I just started with my vids last week and I’m really fighting that inside voice that I’m to cheesy, no one will watch this… blah blah blah. BUT so far I’m seeing some positive results, so I’m hoping I’m on the right track! Thank you Marie! You’re awesome!!

  8. Marie, this is such a great video. We ALL feel like this sometimes. It’s awesome to have successful people like you share truthfully and let us know that we are not alone.

It’s also great to have communities of friends like this to come to for encouragement as well as all the great instruction.

    Rock on Marie.

  9. Jessica

Oh I love you Marie… You are amazing 😉

  10. Thank you for your authentic honesty. Timing is perfect. I just left a meeting where I proposed an outrageous idea for a FlashMob for our next TEDx event. I’m in a New York state of mind!

PS I loves me some hiphop maself….Peace.

  11. Marie (or anyone else out there), how do I get my pic to be me and not the bland default icon when I leave comments on your blog?

    Signed,

    • When setting up your account on gravatar.com, just make sure you use the same email address that you use when leaving comments. That’s what will link the picture up with your comment. 😉

  12. Favorite part, “What would Jay-Z think?” Better than WWJD. WWJZT? Girlfriends are the best.

  13. Great reminders!

  14. Hi Marie,

It’s a great video, thank you so much) It’s such a relief to know that you ALSO feel insecure and doubtful at times! (I know we all do, but still).

I totally agree that having supportive people around you is key to overcoming insecurity and getting ahead.

Thanks again and keep the good stuff coming)

  15. Karen Henriksen

Awesome! Thanks for sharing your insecurity with us – It gives us the relaxation that you too are just a human.

  16. Perfect. how did you know I was riding the self doubt train the last few days? Love this one, thanks Marie!! Looking forward to meeting the RHH group, seeing those ladies on the stage at the event in Nov was one of the reasons I applied 🙂

  17. Marie,
Just the perfect video for me to see now. I’m always questioning my ideas and finally I got smart and have a couple of savvy people on my team to help. I know it is all I need to make it happen.
Love your videos! They are so inspiring and I am sooo admiring you.
    Thanks!
    Peace, Pam

  18. So true! Thanks..

  19. Thanks Marie – and I totally agree that more people should be opening up about their self-confidence and self-doubt. It’s just not spoken about enough.

Folks think that self-doubt is a problem, but it really isn’t. It’s perfectly natural if you’re stretching yourself, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not confident. It just means you’re trying to keep yourself safe, which is a pretty cool thing to do.

Just remember to reassure that voice and then go do what you know matters.

  20. Hi, Marie! Thanks for sharing your own vulnerability. You always always appear so super confident, it’s reassuring to know you sometimes have doubts, too. Your videos are both great content and production values. I look forward to making my own videos soon. Take good care of yourself! Laura

  21. Such a great topic! I was just having the same discussion this morning with a coworker. About how, as a solo entrepreneur, there are plenty of times of self doubt. And how I ride in waves with my business – at one moment hitting the charts – and then the low moments because I don’t know if its the right thing. And we both came up your same answer – surrounding yourself with other like minded people and friends to talk, network, and feedback.

  22. Ashley Gwilliam

Great video Marie! I think it’s really important to surround yourself with positive people who are also energetically compatible. I’ve realized now, more than ever, that I need to be doing this in my own life. The process of stepping up and filling the role of your best self, the role you were born to play, takes major chutzpah! Sadly, sometimes old friends and acquaintances just don’t get it.

  23. Melissa

    Hey Marie!
So true…and we all go through our times of vulnerabilty….be it in our careers, social life, etc.
I do agree on the importance of a supportive circle— they make us better!!!
Thanks for sharing, have a great day!

  24. Karliin

Thanks for your authenticity about your insecurities. I did notice in a short clip of your “Empire State of Mind” music video that you were wearing a fur hat. Knowing how committed you are to speaking up for a woman’s mind, body and her rights, it seems contradictory for you to then turn around and exploit the body of another being. Just like a woman has the inherent right to live her own life, so does an animal. Wearing fur is a true symbol of supporting the same cruelty and oppression that women should stand against. Real or not, advertising cruelty sends a message not in keeping with RHH. For the animals, Karliin

    • Hey Darling – that hat was full on FAUX fur! 🙂

  25. Love the ability to connect to the real places that we all can go with mentors that I have so much love for. Thank you for sharing this.

I’ve been wiggling in and out of that spot of “not so sure about this” and because of the team of support around me, I just keep moving!

    xo

  26. Kat

Real friendships are a key to success and happiness! No doubt about it; I am convinced of that myself.
    Big love!
    Kat

  27. Kristin Morris

Funny, I was just thinking yesterday as wasted my entire day hooking up a monitor (omg) when I should have been focusing on my priorities – Marie cannot be up all the time – like not all the time, can she? And lo, this lovely confirmation that you, goddess Marie are indeed human! Thanks for sharing this today.

  28. Sudha

    Thanks, Marie.

This is wise advice. But I must note that from my own practice, I find many stong, independent women out there in the world often have a difficult time reaching out and creating that stong web of support. We must all remember to ask for help and guidance when we feel in need, instead of retreating into our shell. Likewise, if someone asks of us, no matter how small, we must attend to what is being asked, for if the interaction is avoided, it’ll certainly play itself out somewhere else. We fear ourselves, we fear other, and we grow estranged. We must remember that it is through our connection with one another that we grow strong and walk tall, in secure belief of our ideas and virtues, to build the world in which we feel proud to life.

Happy Mars Day, and enjoy the snow!

  29. I am so excited about this series! I wake up every Tuesday knowing there’s an awesome video to watch! This was a great one. You’re right, this is not something people talk about enough and that’s what I’m trying to change with StartupCorner. Successful people are human just like everyone else! They have their own fears and obstacles to contend with! By being open and honest about these things you can help create common ground and inspire others to overcome their roadblocks and make things happen!

I have my own fears and self doubt, but it’s so true that surrounding yourself with the right people makes all the difference. My support group gives me advice, feedback and, most importantly, believes in what I’m doing which means they will also give me reassurance at the times I need it most.

Thanks for another great video! xo

  30. Kelsea

Marie this was AWESOME!! you are right.. something people don’t address often enough. thank you for your honesty.. just hearing this made me feel so much better!
    Lots of love

  31. Superwoman is super human! Thanks so much for sharing, Marie, and for being the amazingly real, tell-it-like-it is, fabulous sistah that you are! Lots of love. xoxo

  32. I always see that when I am doubting myself that I must be up to something. I am moving out of my comfort zone. So I look

  33. oops.. hit reply too soon.

….I look at those doubting times as a sign that I am venturing into unchartered territory….which is what we (entrepreneurs) should always be doing…growing and expanding into bigger and better versions of us. Having a good support system is the key!

  34. Tatiana

Right on, Marie. It’s all in the community and interaction with people who can love and support you where you are!

  35. Hey Marie!

Thank you so much for being so open and real in this video. It’s great to know that you have those self doubts and insecurities too, and that I’m not the only one. 😉

Over the last few months, I have met so many amazing women, many of whom have become like my own support team. The RHH Virtual gals are amazing, and I have a couple of local friends that have been a HUGE support in helping me to ignore those voices in my head telling me it’s not good enough… 😉 I sure couldn’t do it all on my own! 🙂

  36. Love this – thanks for your honesty, Marie! 🙂

  37. Patricia

Hi Marie, where your video should be I only see a blank space.
Does this have something to do with my computer? Help! I’d
    love to watch this video.
    Thanks, Patricia

    • Hey Patricia. Give it a minute or two – when lots of people are watching the video, it takes a few seconds to load up via YouTube. Or – you can also go straight to http://www.MarieTV.com and watch it there. It’s the first video up today.

  38. Nice to know I’m not the only one with that voice in my head 😉

  39. Pat

I officialy love Q&A Tuesday. , everytime I am going through something, there you are talking about it.. its like you are spying on me 😉 THanks for the great advice, I great to see that all of us have to little moments but having a support system helps a great deal 🙂

  40. Hey Marie!!!

Nice to know it’s “normal” to go there and what ya have to do to follow through on your great ideas!

  41. yay i’m not alone! 🙂 Here’s your next Q Marie – where are you when you’re making your vids? The decor rocks!

  42. Loved your video. Always nice to hear that I am not the only person who has self-doubt. Of course, I know that intuitively but when you start getting into your head…crazy shit starts happening.
    xo Kimberly

  43. I appreciate this coming from you. Everyone thinks once you actually arrive at your goal (whatever highest goal it is) that you won’t have the insecurities and doubts. But it’s not true. I can relate this to parenting.
Even as a parent of 4 yr old (soon to be a mom of 2 😉 I still have my doubtful moments as a mom. And it happens more than twice. It is great to have a partnership with my spouse and he re-assures me ALL THE TIME that I’m doing great as a mom. So I truly understand what you mean and I appreciate this video coming from you. I thank You and all you do Marie.

  44. Right on! I JUST had that moment last night so I’m glad to know I’m not a freak: I was at an author chat and signing event for my book, Branding Basics for Small Business. I was expecting, like, 10 people to show at this swanky hotel on the water (they had asked me to come as part of their monthly series.) I started chatting up a friend of mine at the bar and when I turned around to start the talk, the room was FILLED with about 70 people. So I got up and spoke for a while, and got lots of great compliments and praise.

Fast forward to the car ride home with my hubbie: “I was rambling for too long. I didn’t really share any valuable advice. They were all just being nice. I kept repeating myself…..” And he looks at me like I’ve got 2 heads and says, “Maria, they loved you! They had to bring in extra chairs. You had groupies for God’s sake! Do you have many other friends who also did a 70 person book signing tonight?!” And I had to laugh. Sometimes we need others to let us know we’re on the right track as it’s hard for us to see anything but our own flaws!

And you are dynamite. Don’t even stress….!

  45. Amanda

Thanks for this… was having a really insecure day… this was just what I needed! 🙂

  46. It’s all about COMMUNITY! I just hosted my first Blog ‘n B*tch today and it was hilarious. 9 business owners who want to blog but edit themselves into oblivion before they even get to the “Add a new post” button. It’s so eye opening to see that we all think we sound dumb, and that no one else agrees with us. 🙂

  47. This vid really resonated with me! Thank you!!
I’ve been feeling like I need to boost my support group (out with the downers and in with the visionaries)…I think that’s what I’ve been lacking in my life for a while.
It’s nice to get a little validation.
I look forward to your posts, Marie, muchas gracias!

  48. definitely digging the new vlogs, marie. well done!

  49. I wanna see your music video!! : )

  50. Jeannette

Marie ~ You are psychic! I swear! I am working on creating my biz right now and yesterday I had my first Vlog recording scheduled on my Google calendar. I was so looking forward to making a great video like yours (Katie F. “gives good vid”, too)! Anyway, I recorded the first one and then checked it out… and I was MORTIFIED!!!!

“EWWWWWWW! Is that what I sound like, look like, act like?!” Tried again and again! After 1 hour of scrutinizing my videos, I had little cry-fest with my husband, listing all of the things wrong with me on camera!

He said all the right stuff. He reminded me that the lovely business ladies that I look up to have all had their moments of insecurity as well, that EVERYONE has to overcome these obstacles, and that I can’t give up! It made me feel better, but today – hearing you say it yourself… was AWESOME! THANK YOU MARIE!

  51. Kelly

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but “the people around (me) should be supportive and be real and candid, be able to say anything to” type of stuff is what I’m having a hard time with. I am single (living in LA for so many years does NOT help that situation, as the dating pool here ba-looooooooooows!) and I have 2 or 3 Great friends….but no one really “gets” me. And when I ask for advise, it is not “this is what I believe is best for You” nor does Anyone help me figure out what is in my heart because my future is fuzzy to me, I don’t know what I want anymore (I know, a therapist is best for that but… hello Good Health Insurance, are you there? It’s me, Kelly!) Anyway, got any advise besides “pull an Eat, Prey, Love”? ….which I might do as well.

    • Hi Kelly,
Sounds like you have one of those creative entrepreneurial type spirits who is good at sensing what is missing – I get you. My suggestion is to follow your heart right into an online class of some sort… one where the marketing feels like it is written directly at you. That is how I felt when I signed up for Marie’s Bschool class. Aside from being a great learning experience, I met about 10 ladies who totally get me and my crazy making things happen in a way I haven’t seen kind of way. Best of luck to you 😉

  52. LOVED it, and it was just what I needed to hear today. Thanks! I’ve been very busy, up in my little head, spinning around all sorts of self-doubt talk. I feel better now. Groovy.

  53. zaina

hey Maie , well thnk u so much for uploading this video , and yeah u r true
sometimes i feel like i wanna do that thing and then guess wat ? i always wonder is it okai to do it ? am i right ? can i do it ?
and then i realize one thing : DO WHAT U FEEL , just do it
    without thinking of the results
cuz that will help u to discover ur self

    thnks again
    Zaina

  54. Hey Marie,

I really like what you are doing with your videos. Thanks for sharing that you too still experience fear and self doubt. So, when do we get to see the music video?

    -Jenn

  55. Steph

That was great to hear–reassuring, inspiring and just plain kick-ass advice. Thank you!

  56. that was great Marie…you’re so funny when you’re doing your Hip Hop styleee swagger :)) As creatives we all need a network of individuals/friends who will bump us up when we need it and keep it real. Creativity comes from the heart and needs to be nurtured and supported.

    Loving your vids!
    Steph X

  57. Great post! You always “keeps it real” Boo! That’s why we love you 🙂

    ~Thea

  58. Jen

Thanks girl, perfect post for me today. It’s good to hear how human you are, sometimes we put people on a pedestal, and think “yeah, she’s ballsy” and “i suck” but the truth is, we all have our shit talk-to-ourselves moments, and thank you for your honesty, because it gives this girl some confidence!

  59. So inspiring Marie. Thanks for a peek behind that fabulous curtain of yours! xo

  60. adri

hi Marie, thanks for all the advise ! Your amazing. I would like to see that jay z video you were talking about 🙂

  61. aneta

thanks again Marie. I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. I do believe that the essense of any success in life (in any aspect of life) is the support of people that stand beside you.
Just like the fact that beside every great man stands a supportive woman, etc – though these sound like easily repeated cliches, they are nevertheless true.
thanks for reminding me of that important truth!

  62. Thanks Marie for another great video, I feel like you’re on my support team encouraging me.

Whenever I doubt something I’m doing I ask myself ‘ What would Marie do?’

    xxx Djanira

  63. Great point! And I’d like to see the full video of the parody. Very funny!

  64. Cynthia

Loved, loved, LOVED this video, thanks for the reminder.

  65. Go Marie Go!

I hear you goddess…OMG do I suffer from these kinda days.

Especially when tired, depleted and worn-out.

Love what you are doing….You are AMAZING!!!

  66. Marie

Great subject and we’re so thankful that your fabulous friends didn’t let the “self doubt demons” stop you from making your video. From the snippet you shared we can tell you rocked it! Has Mr. Z contacted you with regard to a future collaboration?!
Thanks again from two sisters! “…R, H & H is our concrete jungle where dreams are made of!” 🙂

  67. Your vibrant personality empowers people, love your honesty! Stay spiffy!

  68. Thanks, Marie! I love that you encourage people to be honest and search for support when they are feeling insecure. A lot of us tend to go inward, which only exacerbates the insecurity, and is often paralyzing. Thanks for your honesty, and encouraging us to go higher by holding true to ours!

  69. Kristen

I LOVE that you answered my Q! Thanks Marie! Your advice is exactly what I needed to hear. I have been craving a team – so I’m making the deposits that have a solid team around me. You rock woman!

  70. Paige Makoski

    Hey Marie,

I LOVE Q&A Tuesdays!!! I look forward to that piece of e-mail each week!
I’ve been sluggish with my meditations these days. Makin’ crappy excuses and drinkin’ too much coffee. This video was the inspiration I needed 🙂

Thank you Marie for this video. There are lots of times I’m having a self-doubt, fear and insecurities. I was thinking if I’m really good enough of what I’m doing. Thank you for enlightening me. Cheers! 🙂

  75. Linda Tallon

Your best money advisor is your inner being. Thousands have been shafted by legal counselors/advisors that have their own greedy hidden agenda! Stop using crutches, and so called “experts.” Let them pull their credit scores, savings first before they advise others!!!!! I have NEVER made a mistake by following my GUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t listen to others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Loved the video as always and the music video was AWESOOOOMMMMEEE!!!!

  77. Elsa

    that was amazing advice Marie!
one thing I would add would be theme cupcakes for the holidays (saint patrick’s coming up) and once a week or once a month an initiative to help out a charity of your choice (donating a dollar for each cupcake sold, you could make puppy shaped cupcakes for animal shelters, pink cupcakes to help women around the world…). I would love to eat a cupcake thinking that I’m helping out too 🙂
    best of luck!! xx

  78. Elsa

oh shoot… that comment was meant for a video I watched right after this one… sorry 🙂

  79. Rosie

Great and motivating info as always Marie, thanks for being such a bright star in amongst the plothora of dull information online! x

  80. I love when we can all be open and honest with each other about when we feel insecure. Hearing people that I find to be successful, like Marie, be transparent about issues such as insecurity it takes off a little of the edge. Knowing that we all deal with self-doubt makes it easier to feel less ashamed when we start to question ourselves. Definitely agree that one of the best ways to diffuse insecurity is to have great people who can rally around you and remind you of the truth when you can’t see yourself clearly!

  81. Thank you. You provide amazing value. This is one of the best websites in the field.
    Thank you, Marie.
