How I Deal With Insecurity + Self-Doubt

79

Ever curious about how people you consider “successful” really think and behave behind closed doors? I know I am.

In this video, I’ll take you inside my own head and heart and share a bit of what goes on during my creative process.

I’ll also share an easy way to ensure you’re “walking your talk” as they say, which is important if you’re in the author/speaker/consultant/coach kind of world.

Note from Marie:  Many of you are asking to see the full-on music video.  Click here to watch it now.

So whatdya think? Leave a comment and let me know. And, if you found this juicy and worthy, go on and share it with your friends.

Thanks Marie! Fabulous insight… and it’s always comforting to know that you have those moments too. I know I have them on a regular basis… but I am getting better and better about saying “I’m Back!” and moving forward instead of letting my fears or insecurities keep me playing small. Mmuah!

Thank you for sharing that personal info. Marie! It is so nice to know that we’re not alone when we have self-doubt…when the Am I Crazy? alarm goes off in your head. Too funny that you mentioned the video as an example of your doubt because I love that video and thought: that’s the way to do it…infuse some fun into your business!

Boy, was that me last week! Had the website from hell that totally kicked my a$$ and pretty much had me convinced that I had no clue what I was doing. I just kept talking to myself and reminding myself that people DO tell me I’m good at what I do, and heck, they can’t ALL be wrong, right?
Thankfully, like my momma always told me when my kids were toddlers, “this too shall pass” and it did. Whew.

Hi Marie, When I saw the title of your post, I just had to read it. I thought, “What? Marie, insecure? Self-doubt? Never!”

I’m so glad you’re human just like the rest of us!

Thanks for sharing your tip for overcoming insecurity and self-doubt. My only question is, what if everyone says you’re fabulous but you just don’t feel it?

YES I struggle with that too! I just started with my vids last week and I’m really fighting that inside voice that I’m to cheesy, no one will watch this… blah blah blah. BUT so far I’m seeing some positive results, so I’m hoping I’m on the right track! Thank you Marie! You’re awesome!!

It’s also great to have communities of friends like this to come to for encouragement as well as all the great instruction.

Thanks Marie – and I totally agree that more people should be opening up about their self-confidence and self-doubt. It’s just not spoken about enough.

Folks think that self-doubt is a problem, but it really isn’t. It’s perfectly natural if you’re stretching yourself, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not confident. It just means you’re trying to keep yourself safe, which is a pretty cool thing to do.

Just remember to reassure that voice and then go do what you know matters.

Such a great topic! I was just having the same discussion this morning with a coworker. About how, as a solo entrepreneur, there are plenty of times of self doubt. And how I ride in waves with my business – at one moment hitting the charts – and then the low moments because I don’t know if its the right thing. And we both came up your same answer – surrounding yourself with other like minded people and friends to talk, network, and feedback.

Great video Marie! I think it’s really important to surround yourself with positive people who are also energetically compatible. I’ve realized now, more than ever, that I need to be doing this in my own life. The process of stepping up and filling the role of your best self, the role you were born to play, takes major chutzpah! Sadly, sometimes old friends and acquaintances just don’t get it.

Thanks for your authenticity about your insecurities. I did notice in a short clip of your “Empire State of Mind” music video that you were wearing a fur hat. Knowing how committed you are to speaking up for a woman’s mind, body and her rights, it seems contradictory for you to then turn around and exploit the body of another being. Just like a woman has the inherent right to live her own life, so does an animal. Wearing fur is a true symbol of supporting the same cruelty and oppression that women should stand against. Real or not, advertising cruelty sends a message not in keeping with RHH. For the animals, Karliin

And lo, this lovely confirmation that you, goddess Marie are indeed human! Thanks for sharing this today.

Thanks, Marie.

This is wise advice. But I must note that from my own practice, I find many stong, independent women out there in the world often have a difficult time reaching out and creating that stong web of support. We must all remember to ask for help and guidance when we feel in need, instead of retreating into our shell. Likewise, if someone asks of us, no matter how small, we must attend to what is being asked, for if the interaction is avoided, it’ll certainly play itself out somewhere else. We fear ourselves, we fear other, and we grow estranged. We must remember that it is through our connection with one another that we grow strong and walk tall, in secure belief of our ideas and virtues, to build the world in which we feel proud to life.

Happy Mars Day, and enjoy the snow!

I am so excited about this series! I wake up every Tuesday knowing there’s an awesome video to watch! This was a great one. You’re right, this is not something people talk about enough and that’s what I’m trying to change with StartupCorner. Successful people are human just like everyone else! They have their own fears and obstacles to contend with! By being open and honest about these things you can help create common ground and inspire others to overcome their roadblocks and make things happen!

I have my own fears and self doubt, but it’s so true that surrounding yourself with the right people makes all the difference. My support group gives me advice, feedback and, most importantly, believes in what I’m doing which means they will also give me reassurance at the times I need it most.

Thanks for another great video! xo

I appreciate this coming from you. Everyone thinks once you actually arrive at your goal (whatever highest goal it is) that you won’t have the insecurities and doubts. But it’s not true. I can relate this to parenting.
Even as a parent of 4 yr old (soon to be a mom of 2 ;) I still have my doubtful moments as a mom. And it happens more than twice. It is great to have a partnership with my spouse and he re-assures me ALL THE TIME that I’m doing great as a mom. So I truly understand what you mean and I appreciate this video coming from you. I thank You and all you do Marie.

Right on! I JUST had that moment last night so I’m glad to know I’m not a freak: I was at an author chat and signing event for my book, Branding Basics for Small Business. I was expecting, like, 10 people to show at this swanky hotel on the water (they had asked me to come as part of their monthly series.) I started chatting up a friend of mine at the bar and when I turned around to start the talk, the room was FILLED with about 70 people. So I got up and spoke for a while, and got lots of great compliments and praise.

Fast forward to the car ride home with my hubbie: “I was rambling for too long. I didn’t really share any valuable advice. They were all just being nice. I kept repeating myself…..” And he looks at me like I’ve got 2 heads and says, “Maria, they loved you! They had to bring in extra chairs. You had groupies for God’s sake! Do you have many other friends who also did a 70 person book signing tonight?!” And I had to laugh. Sometimes we need others to let us know we’re on the right track as it’s hard for us to see anything but our own flaws!

And you are dynamite. Don’t even stress….!

Marie ~ You are psychic! I swear! I am working on creating my biz right now and yesterday I had my first Vlog recording scheduled on my Google calendar. I was so looking forward to making a great video like yours (Katie F. “gives good vid”, too)! Anyway, I recorded the first one and then checked it out… and I was MORTIFIED!!!!

“EWWWWWWW! Is that what I sound like, look like, act like?!” Tried again and again! After 1 hour of scrutinizing my videos, I had little cry-fest with my husband, listing all of the things wrong with me on camera!

He said all the right stuff. He reminded me that the lovely business ladies that I look up to have all had their moments of insecurity as well, that EVERYONE has to overcome these obstacles, and that I can’t give up! It made me feel better, but today – hearing you say it yourself… was AWESOME! THANK YOU MARIE!

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but “the people around (me) should be supportive and be real and candid, be able to say anything to” type of stuff is what I’m having a hard time with. I am single (living in LA for so many years does NOT help that situation, as the dating pool here ba-looooooooooows!) and I have 2 or 3 Great friends….but no one really “gets” me. And when I ask for advise, it is not “this is what I believe is best for You” nor does Anyone help me figure out what is in my heart because my future is fuzzy to me, I don’t know what I want anymore (I know, a therapist is best for that but… hello Good Health Insurance, are you there? It’s me, Kelly!) Anyway, got any advise besides “pull an Eat, Prey, Love”? ….which I might do as well.

Sounds like you have one of those creative entrepreneurial type spirits who is good at sensing what is missing – I get you. My suggestion is to follow your heart right into an online class of some sort… one where the marketing feels like it is written directly at you. That is how I felt when I signed up for Marie’s Bschool class. Aside from being a great learning experience, I met about 10 ladies who totally get me and my crazy making things happen in a way I haven’t seen kind of way. Best of luck to you ;)
